''You know what's weird? Mustard-covered bananas.'' Karen said, taking an M&M from the bowl in front of us and throwing it into her mouth.
''Oh, gross.'' I grimaced, taking one as well and copying her actions.
''How about this one?," Bryson spoke, making a pause to sound 'mysterious'. "Cotton candy covered in mayo."
''Ugh, that one does not sound tasty at all.'' Karen said while laughing.
''Oh, I have one!," I exclaimed, raising my hand as if I was answering a question in class. "Pineapples covered in Marinara sauce.''
Karen made a gagging noise as Bryson took another handful of candy. "That's why I stay away from pineapple pizza."
"Can you imagine, though, that we tried all of those things we just mentioned and actually like them?," Bryson said. "I dare you guys to put mustard on a banana and try it right now."
"Why don't you try it, Bryson?" Karen said, rolling her eyes.
"No one's gonna try anything, because if I see anyone vomiting I will tell mom to give you guys up for adoption," I said, staring mostly at Bryson because he was the one who came up with the idea. He raised his hands in defense. "What we can do, though, is watch TV like normal people."
Half an hour later, we were in the middle of a Sci-Fi movie that we randomly found while going through the cannels. My phone suddenly vibrated and I instantly assumed that it was Calvin writing, since we had been texting for a while, but when I looked at the screen I realized that it was Scott who had texted me.
Meet me at the school's parking lot, It's important
I furrowed my eyebrows at the message, wondering what was so important that we had to meet at the school's parking lot, when it could've been anywhere else. Still, I didn't question and instantly replied to him.
Sure, on my way
***
''Hey, I'm here'' I said, walking towards Scott, Stiles, and Derek, who seemed to be in a heated conversation.
''Penny?'' Scott said, looking at me confusedly. ''What are you doing here?''
''You told me to come.'' I said in an obvious tone.
''What? No, I didn't."
''Yes, you did." I said, taking my phone out and showing him the message. "See?
He read the message and then he shook his head. "I didn't send that."
I looked at the message again, to see if maybe I had read the name wrong. But Scott's contact name was still there. ''Then who the hell sent it?''
''I don't know.'' he muttered, glacing at Derek for a second.
''So do you think, you know, the Alpha did it?'' Stiles asked.
''It could've been,'' Derek said. "But... how?"
"The Alpha?," I repeated. "Is that the thing that has been attacking people lately? The one that bit Scott?"
"Yes," Scott confirmed. ''Which reminds me... Stiles, let's head inside the school.''
As Stiles nodded, Derek looked confused. ''What are you gonna do inside?''
''I'm gonna prove to you that Dr. Deaton is not the Alpha by summoning the real Alpha here." Scott said, looking as if it was the most amazing plan he's ever had.
"What?" I said, confused as well.
"Derek here has this theory about my boss being the Alpha." Scott explained, glaring at Derek.
"Wait, but.. how are you gonna summon the Alpha and know if he's Deaton or not?" I asked him.
"We'll see when he wakes up." Stiles answered, and then he motioned towards the back of Derek's car with his head.
Raising an eyebrow, I turned to see what he was looking at, and I immediately saw an unconscious Dr. Deaton inside the car, with a few injuries on his face, his mouth taped, and his body tied up. My eyes widened as I turned back to look at them. "What the f-"
"Don't worry, he's comfortable." Derek said sarcastically.
"Doesn't that count as kidnapping?" I asked in disbelief.
Stiles scratched the back of his neck. "Well, I wouldn't call it kidnapping, just... making sure he wasn't the Alpha."
"Would you rather him lashing out and killing everyone at Beacon Hills?" Derek added.
I couldn't answer that because no one was completely sure if Dr. Deaton was even the Alpha. But, if he was, then we had to be prepared.
"He's not the Alpha," Scott almost growled. "And I will show you. Come on, Stiles."
''Idiots.'' Derek muttered after they left.
For a while, Derek and I stood there, leaning against his car and waiting for the other two to come back. ''Why are they taking so long?'' I asked, staring at the building.
''I don't know. I just hope that they don't do anything stupid.'' Derek said.
''Well, they always do something stupid,'' I said. "And, trying to summon the Alpha counts as something stupid, right?"
"Coming from them, it definitely does."
All of a sudden, we heard a noise coming from the school's intercom, which could be clearly heard from where Derek and I were standing. It sounded like a howl... more like a cat howl. Was that...? ''He's got to be kidding me.'' Derek muttered, looking as if he was done with everything.
''What the hell was that?,'' I asked. ''Was that Scott?''
''What do you think?'' Derek said sighing.
Then, seconds later, another howl came, but it was so much different than the first one. Way too different. This time, it did sound like a true werewolf howl. And it was loud. Too loud...
''I'm gonna kill both of you," Derek said as soon as Scott and Stiles walked out of the school and towards us. "What the hell was that? What were you trying to do, attract the entire state to the school?''
''Sorry. I didn't know it would be that loud.'' Scott said.
''Huh, it was loud," Stiles agreed. "And it was awesome.''
''Shut up.'' Derek told him.
''Sorry.''
''Now what?'' I asked.
''Now, we wait for the Alpha,'' Scott said. Derek nodded, although he still looked like he wanted to rip their heads off. Then, Scott grabbed me by the arm. "Penny, if something happens tonight I don't want you to get hurt, so I suggest you leave now, please."
I was about to protest and tell him that I wanted to stay here, Stiles spoke up. "Hey, um, guys? Deaton's not here anymore."
Scott quickly walked towards Derek's car and I followed. When he saw that the car was empty, he looked back at Derek. "Where did he go?"
"I don't know," Derek answered, raising an eyebrow. "But It's pretty suspicious if you ask me-"
"No," Scott cut him off, shaking his head. "He can't be the Alpha, he just can't."
"Yeah, well, how do you explain the fact that he has knowledge about the vendetta sign for werewolves?," Derek said, clearly getting agitated. "That Alpha is out there and we're just standing here, in a stupid school's parking lot, waiting for him to magically come to us just because we want him to."
And just as he said that, blood suddenly started to pour from Derek's mouth. All of us stood there frozen on our spot as the giant creature held Derek from behind, its claws stabbing him from the back.
My eyes widened as the creature effortlessly threw him aside and looked at us with its big, red eyes. ''Let's go!'' Scott shouted and three of us quickly ran towards the school.
''Lock it!,'' Scott said as he and Stiles tried to hold the front doors. The Alpha was trying to break in. "s**t, lock it!"
''Do I look like I have a key?!'' Stiles said, clearly panicking.
''Let's just grab something to hold it.'' I said as I looked around for any object.
''What?'' Stiles asked.
''Anything!'' Scott said.
The Alpha seemed to stop trying to break the doors, and we stood there for a minute, frozen, waiting for anything to happen. When nothing did, Stiles looked outside the tiny glass of the door. ''Is he gone?'' I asked, my voice coming out shaky.
Scott looked at Stiles knowingly, but I didn't understand what they were silently saying to each other. ''No.''
''Yes.''
''Stiles, no!'' Scott said as Stiles opened the door and stepped outside.
''Wha-'' I ran towards the door and stood where Stiles was standing just seconds ago. "What is he doing?!"
Scott and I watched as Stiles carefully kneeled in front of a tool that was on the street, one that he had used to open the school doors in the first place. I felt Scott's hand grab wrist, but I didn't pay too much attention to it because something else had caught my eye. ''Oh no'' I whispered.
''What?'' Scott looked at me and I pointed to Stiles' jeep.
There it was, looking at Stiles. ''Stiles!'' Scott and I called a bunch of times while tapping on the glass, trying to get his attention.
The creature ran towards Stiles, but thankfully, Stiles was faster and he quickly entered school, again. He locked the doors using the tool that he looked for. We all looked through the tiny window. ''Where is it?'' I wondered.
''Where did it go?'' Scott asked as Stiles used a flashlight he had to look outside.
There was nothing. ''This will hold, will it?'' Scott said, referring to the tool.
Stiles looked at Scott in worry. "Probably not."
The beast might've ran somewhere else, but we still heard the howls around the school. "I think we should... leave this spot." I said, slowly taking a few steps back.
And so we ran, again, until finally we reached the chemistry classroom. ''Help me move the desk!'' Scott said.
It took us less than a minute to drag the desk towards the door, and we didn't even think about how heavy it was because of the panic and fear we were feeling at the moment. ''Okay, stop,'' Stiles said, suddenly. ''The door's not gonna keep it out.''
''I know,'' Scott panted. "But, what else can we do?"
''We need to get your boss.''
''What?''
''Deaton? The Alpha? Your boss.'' Stiles said.
''No!'' Why was Scott still so sure that Deaton was not the Alpha? All things were pointing at him at the moment.
''Yes," Stiles hissed. "Murdering, psycho werewolf.''
''He can't be.'' Scott said.
''Oh, come on. He disappears and that thing shows up ten seconds later to toss Derek twenty feet through the air?'' Stiles said. ''That's not really a good timing.''
''Not him-''
''He killed Derek.'' I pointed out
''Well, Derek's not dead," Scott said. "He can't be dead.''.
''What? He spurted out of his mouth, okay? That doesn't exactly qualifies as a minor injury. He's dead, and we're next.'' Stiles said.
Scott ran a hand through his hair. ''Okay... just... what do we do?''
''We get to my jeep. We get out of here. You seriously think about quiting your job. Good?'' Stiles planned.
''How in the world are we going to get to your Jeep without getting devoured by that thing?'' I asked as we looked through the windows.
''We just have to jump out of this window as quietly as we can,'' Stiles said. ''...If we can open it.''
''We break it.'' Scott suggested.
''Which would make a lot of noise.''
''Well, then... then... we run really fast.'' I said.
''Really fast.'' Scott added as he checked to see if the Alpha was outside.
I furrowed my eyebrows as I spotted Stiles' Jeep, but something was different. ''Stiles, what's wrong with the hood of your jeep?''
''What do you mean? Nothing's wrong.'' Stiles said, turning to where I was looking.
''It's bent!'' Scott said.
''You mean dented?'' Stiles asked confusedly, pointing to the Jeep with his flashlight.
''No, I mean bent!'' Scott said.
Stiles finally saw it, and his facial expression changed into a horrified one. ''What the hell happened to-'' but before he could finish his question, something coming from outside had broken the glass of our opposite side.
We were quick to drop to the floor, that thing must've been the one to throw the object. ''What the hell is that?'' Scott asked.
''It's... the jeep's battery'' I said. the three of us eyeing the big battery in front of us.
''Oh shit.'' Stiles muttered. He started to stand up, but I pulled him back. ''Don't.''
''We have to move.''
''He could be right outside.'' Scott pointed out.
''He is right outside.'' Stiles said.
''Just, let me take a look.'' Scott said, standing up to look through the window.
I watched him from the floor as he looked around. ''Nothing?''
''No.'' he whispered, shaking his head.
''Do we move now?'' Stiles muttered.
Scott said nodding his head violently. "We move now."
We exited the classroom after moving the desk back to its place, and then we made it to the hall. It looked dark and creepy, and even more with the situation we were going through, but thankfully Stiles had his flashlight. ''This way.'' Scott whispered, making a right, but Stiles stopped him.
''No, no, no, no, no. We need to go somewhere without windows.''
''Every single room in this building has windows.'' Scott said.
''Well, somewhere without glass windows.'' Stiles said, looking around.
''I don't think there's a room without-''
''The locker room!'' Scott cut me off.
''I take that back.'' I muttered as we started to run once again.
When we finally reached basketball court, we entered the locker room and locked the front door. ''Call your dad.'' Scott told Stiles.
''And tell him what?'' Stiles asked.
''I don't know, anything,'' Scott said. ''If that thing see's the parking lot filled with cop cars It'll take off.''
''And what if it doesn't? What if it goes completely Terminator and kills every cop inside, including my dad?'' Stiles said.
''They have guns.''
''Guns will probably do nothing to it.''
''Then... we just... we have to find a way out and just run for it.'' Scott said.
''What about Derek's car?'' I suggested.
''That could work! We go outside, we get the keys off his body-'' Stiles shivered. ''-And then we take his car.''
''And him.'' Scott added.
''Fine. Whatever.''
We started to walk around, trying to look for another way out. I found another door at the back of the room, and I was about to open it when Scott suddenly grabbed my hand. ''What?'' I looked at him.
''I think I heard something.'' he whispered.
''You what?'' Stiles whispered back.
''Be quiet.''
Without removing his hand from mine we started to step back. As much as I loved the feeling when his hand touched mine, that wasn't the most important thing at the moment because I was afraid. We were all afraid. A freaking Alpha wanted to kill us.
I could hear the noises, as well, and I slowly gulped. My throat was getting dry and my hands were starting to shake. Scott seemed to notice because he quickly said, ''Everything's going to be okay.''
As much as I wanted to believe that, I couldn't. It was too hard to believe it when you were currently stuck in a life threatening situation, but I tried my best to nod in agreement. ''Go hide.'' Scott whispered to Stiles and I.
And we did. Stiles and I each looked for a locker to hide in, and then everything was quiet. None of us dared to speak when we heard someone slowly opening the door. I covered my mouth as the person started to walk around the locker room, but the person didn't seem to notice any of us. That was until he reached mine. He basically stood in front of me, but I still couldn't figure out who it was. When he went to open the locker door I let out a scream and accidentally hit him with my elbow right in the nose, but now I knew exactly who it was. The janitor screamed in pain, then in fear when the other two came out of their lockers. ''Son of a b***h!,'' he said to Stiles, who came out last. ''What the hell are you trying to do, kill me? The three of you, get out!''
''Dude, just listen to us for a second, okay?'' Stiles tried to calm him down.
''I'm not okay. Get the hell out of here, now!'' he said, pushing us all out of the room.
''Just one second to explain.'' Stiles pleaded once we were out.
''Just shut up and go.'' the janitor said, but, as soon as he said that, he was pushed inside the room by someone, or something, and the door closed.
His screams could be heard coming from inside, and we instantly knew that the Alpha had gotten to him before we could warn him about anything. The three of us looked at each other in fear. Another attack that couldn't be prevented.
''We have to go, now!'' I said. At this point I was starting to feel that we were probably not gonna make it out of here alive.
We ran again, and we tried to open the back doors once we reached them, but something was blocking them from the outside. ''What the hell?''
''It's a dumpster.'' Scott said as he looked through the small glass.
''He pushed it in front of the door.'' Stiles muttered.
He tried to push the doors one more time. ''Stiles, it's useless.'' I said with a defeated sigh.
''Come on. Help me, guys.'' he said.
''Stiles, stop it,'' Scott said grabbing him by the shoulders. "Let's just look for another way out."
''I'm not dying here," Stiles' panic was starting to show as we walked at a fast pace around the hall. "I'm not dying at school.''
''We're not going to die.'' Scott assured us.
''God, what is he doing? What does it want?'' I asked, frustrated.
''Me,'' Scott replied. ''Derek says it's stronger with a pack.''
''Ah, great. A psychotic werewolf is into team work. That's... that's beautiful.'' Stiles said sarcastically.
Scott stopped walking, and so did we. We moved our stare at what he was looking. Outside the window in front of was us the beast, staring at us intensely. Then, when it saw us staring back, it started to run towards us. ''Run!'' Scott yelled.
We ran as fast as we could, not daring to look back. I heard the loud sound of the glass shattering and I knew that the creature was now right behind us. Our pace fastened. ''This way!'' Stiles yelled, opening a door that led us to some stairs. We went down
I actually didn't know where we were now. The school was getting harder to recognize and even more because it was at night. The place looked like an abandoned locker room that hadn't been used in a long time. We leaned our backs into a locker and Scott peeked his head a bit to see if the creature was still behind us. The quiet growls could be heard in the room, so it was clear that it was still around. Then, the growls stopped. ''Is it gone?'' I whispered to Scott.
He nodded after making sure, and then he motioned us to go the other way, so we did. ''Alright, we have to do something.'' Stiles said as soon as we left the room.
''What?'' Scott asked.
''I don't know. Kill it. Hurt it. Something to stop it.''
''I vote for killing it,'' I said. After looking like he was thinking about something, Stiles started to take the keys of his Jeep out of his pocket. ''Stiles, what are you doing?''
''Shh''
''Stiles, no!'' Scott said.
''Shh!''
The sound of the keys jiggling and Stiles dropping them let the Alpha know where we were. We started to run, again, with the creature following. As quick as possible, Scott and Stiles trapped the werewolf in a room with a heavy metal door, us outside of it. We all closed it shut and the two boys shove a desk against it to keep it closed. ''We did it,'' Scott breathed, letting out a relieved chuckle. ''We did it!''
The three of us started to cheer quietly. ''Who's stronger now, Alpha?'' Stiles taunted.
I rolled my eyes. The Alpha hit the door from inside and Stiles suddenly jumped. ''Whoa'' he said.
''Come on, get across, Scott,'' I told him, since he was on the other side of the desk.
It only took him a few seconds to jump and stand next to us. After he did so, Stiles went to check on the door, but I stopped him. ''What are you doing?''
''I just wanna get a look at it.'' Stiles said.
''Are you crazy?'' Scott said, staring at Stiles as if he had grown a second head.
''You guys, it's trapped, okay? It's not gonna get out.''
Stiles jumped on top of the desk and pointed the flashlight to the door. where you could see the creature through the small glass. ''Yeah, that's right. We got you trapped.'' Stiles taunted, again.
''Dude, stop-''
''No, i'm not scared of this thing.'' but he probably took that back when the werewolf placed his hand on the tiny window, making Stiles jump off the desk.
''I'm not scared of you, alright? 'Cause you're in there and we're out here. You're not going anywhere.'' But, of course, not everything went as we planned. The werewolf somehow managed to get out of the room by breaking through the flimsy suspended ceiling tiles, and it exited the room through the crawl space.
We watched as a the tiles bent with every step the werewolf took, above us. ''Oh my God," I muttered. "Now what do we do?''
One of the tiles fell to the floor. ''We run'' Scott said, and we did as we were told.
''Wait!," Scott stopped abruptly, and we did, too. His eyes squinted in concentration. "Do you hear that?''
''Hear what?'' I said.
''It sounds like a phone ringing.''
''What?'' Stiles said.
''I know that ring. It's Allison's phone.'' Scott said.
''What? Allison's here?'' I asked.
''I don't know,'' he replied. "I hope not."
''Well, we better start looking, then.'' Stiles said.
''Penny, give me your phone.'' Scott extended his hand to me.
''Why?''
''I need to call Allison.'' he said.
I wanted to say no, but I couldn't. If Allison' was there, too, then that meant that she was also in danger. Now's not the time to feel jealous I thought as I handed him my phone.
He spoke after a few seconds. ''No, it's me. Where are you?... Where are you right now?... Where? Where are you, exactly?...Get to the lobby. Go now,'' and with that he hung up and handed me back my phone. ''She's here.''
***
''Why are you here?'' Scott asked Allison as soon as we found her.
''Because you asked me to.'' she said, sounding confused.
''I asked you to?''
She showed him her phone. He looked back at her again with wide eyes. He stared at me and I gave him a knowing look. It had happened to her, too.
She seemed to notice our exchange. ''Why do I get feeling you didn't send this message?''
''Because I didn't.''
''Did you drive here?'' Stiles asked her.
''Jackson did.''
''Jackson's here-?''
''And Lydia. What's going on? Who sent me this text?'' Allison asked, just before her phone rang. ''Where are you?'' she said on the phone and suddenly the door behind her opened, revealing Lydia and Jackson.
''Finally," Lydia said in an annoyed tone. "Can we go now?''
But, just then, a noise came from the ceiling. It was getting louder and louder as the seconds passed. ''Run!'' Scott said, with his finger already interlaced with Allison's, and we did as he told us.
As we ran I grabbed Lydia's hand because she was staying behind due to her shoes. We ran up the stairs and through the halls, the Alpha following us the whole time, until finally we entered a classroom. My mind was too busy processing things to figure out which classroom it was.
Scott locked the doors. 'What was that? Scott, what was that?'' Allison asked desperately.
''What was it doing in the ceiling?'' Lydia asked, already looking terrified.
''Just help me move this'' Scott said as he and Jackson moved the desk against the door.
Allison, Lydia and I started to move chairs against the door, as well. All of us, except Stiles, who was trying to catch our attention, but we were too worried about blocking the door that we didn't hear him, until he shouted at us. ''HELLO?!''
He sighed when our full attention was now on him. ''Okay, nice work. Really good job, everyone. Now, what should we do with the twenty wall windows?''
Shit. The windows covered the whole wall, so the werewolf could easily break in if it wanted to. ''Somebody please explain what's going on because I'm freaking out here,'' Allison said. ''And, I'd like to know why. Scott?''
Nobody said anything. Scott was probably thinking of something to say, but it was me who spoke first. ''Somebody killed the janitor.''
''What?'' Lydia said.
''Yeah, the janitor's dead.'' I said, again.
''What is she talking about? Is this a joke?'' Allison said, looking at Scott.
Scott shook his head, not looking at any of us. ''Well, who killed him?'' Jackson asked.
Silence. No one spoke for a moment, because we didn't know how to explain things. ''Who was it? And, what does it want?,'' Allison said, waiting for an answer. ''What's happening?''
She looked at me. ''Penny?''
The only thing I did was shake my head. I gave a little nod towards Scott, telling her that he was the one who had to answer. She quickly looked at him, again. ''Scott!''
''I-I don't know," he finally spoke. "If we go outside, he's gonna kill us.''
''Us? He's gonna kill us?'' Lydia said, as if she hadn't heard correctly.
''Who? Who is it?'' Allison asked one more time.
Stiles looked at me, then looked at Scott. ''It's Derek,'' Scott lied. ''It's Derek Hale.''
''Wait, Derek killed the janitor?'' Jackson asked.
''Are you sure?''
''I saw him. Derek killed them.'' Scott continued with his lie.
''All of them?''
''Yeah, starting with his own sister.'' And he lied, again.
''And the guy in the video store?''
''And the guy in the video store. It was him the whole time. He's in here with us,'' Scott said, Stiles and I looking at each other. ''And if we don't get out he's going to kill us, too.''
