Chapter one: my rival
My hair whipped around my face as i rushed toward the old mountain inn, suitcase dragging behind me. A blizzard was brewing, and i was determined to reach the debate team's winter retreat on time. As I burst through the creaky doors,a warm glow enveloped me, and the scent of hot chocolate filled my senses. But my comfort was short-lived. speaking of arrogant show-offs... Jonathan Edelman, my academic arch-nemesis, stood by the fireplace, sipping hot cocoa like he owned the place. "looks like the storm finally decided to show up,just like you always do – late and unwelcome," he said, his piercing green eyes glinting with amusement. my blood boiled. how dare he! I forced a sweet smile, though my eyes narrowed slightly. "at least i don't arrive early to every event like a desperate try-hard seeking attention." Jonathan chuckled, his ebony hair perfectly messy as always. "attention from you, perhaps. though your scorn is flattering, i prefer admiration." i rolled my eyes dramatically. our debate coach, ms. lee, interrupted our banter, "team, let's discuss tomorrow's strategy—" but her words trailed off as she glanced out the window. the storm had intensified, with heavy snowfall and strong winds. ms. lee frowned. "it seems the roads are impassable. we're snowed in, team. make yourselves comfortable, we'll discuss strategy in the morning." my heart sank. trapped with Jonathan? this blizzard just got worse. Panic set in as I realized we had limited rooms available. Ms. Lee announced, "Due to the circumstances, some of you will share rooms. Kiara, you'll room with Jonathan." My jaw dropped. Share a room with my arch-nemesis? No way! But Ms. Lee was firm, and Jonathan just smirked, already heading upstairs. I reluctantly followed, my heavy boots thudding on each step. As we entered our cozy room, Jonathan claimed the larger bed, leaving me the smaller one near the window. Fine by me – I wanted to keep an eye on the storm anyway. But as night fell, the howling wind and creaking wood made me nervous. Jonathan, sensing my unease, teasingly offered, "Need me to keep you safe, Kiara?"I shot him a withering glance. "I'd rather be snowed in with a yeti."Jonathan chuckled, his eyes glinting in the dim light. "Yetis don't have my charming smile or impressive debate skills."I rolled my eyes, but a small smile escaped. Jonathan noticed, and his expression softened. For a moment, we just looked at each other, no teasing or rivalry. Then I broke the spell, turning away to gaze out the window. The storm raged on, but inside, something else was brewing. something I feared.
