ONE morning, towards the end of their winter vacation, Emon and Kansan were wandering on the lane near the gate of the Anand’s. They were watching the labourers and the bricklayers laying the foundation of the flats that would come up in the field beside the Anand’s. Sometime later, Emon and Kansan heard a voice calling: “Emon! Emon!”
“Aoi, somebody’s calling me,” Emon said.
“It’s Anand Aunty,” Kansan said.
“But where’s she?” Emon said looking at the Anand’s.
“She isn’t in the veranda,” Kansan said.
“Emon! Kansan! Come in, I’m inside,” Mrs Anand’s voice called again.
“Let’s go in and see,” Kansan said.
