ONE day the boys of Emon’s neighbourhood had spent the afternoon playing cricket in the field. At dusk, they stopped playing and all the boys except Emon, Rajesh and Kansan went away home.
Later Emon, Rajesh and Kansan also came out of the field. Outside, they were passing the Anand’s house when Emon abruptly stopped on his tracks and said: “Hey listen – listen, Anand Aunty’s crying again.”
Rajesh and Kansan also stopped. They heard through the fading light the melancholy sound of a woman crying floating out of the Anand’s house.
“Anand Uncle must have beaten her again,” Kansan said.
“Hoo,” Emon said.
“Shhh listen,” Rajesh said.
