Chapter 4His name was Æsc. It was carved on the back of his neck, the scars blended with ink. When I ran my fingers over the bumpy ridges of skin, I shuddered with the power it gave me, but I would never use his name without his permission. He told me it had been given to him by his master and mentor, many years ago. They’d lived further north, near a human city. Ash said it was other humans who had killed his master. When he spoke of it he seemed sad, so I didn’t ask him more questions. I nuzzled into him and stroked his long silky hair through my fingers. I purred near his ear, because he said the sound was soothing. My nights with Ash had been wonderful, but the days I spent with him were even better.
