Being human was a dirty business. It was a warm yet breezy day. I pulled out the stick attached with twine at the back of the cabin, where the clover patch was, and hung the clothes out to dry. Then I tidied up everywhere outside the cabin, even scraped the moss from the wood. The nights were getting colder now, so I restrung new skins on the windows. That would keep the cabin warm at night. By the time the sun had set, I was exhausted. I barely had enough energy to make my supper and eat it. I sat on a blanket on the floor, next to Ash’s chair. If I closed my eyes, I could almost feel his presence here with me. When I crawled into the bed by myself, I slept on Ash’s side. I scolded my own haste for changing the bedsheets; I should have left them for one night, so I could still smell him
