Chapter1
“Grrr…”
“Grrr…”
“Oh God!” I groaned in annoyance with my eyes still tightly shut.
“Grrr…”
“Grrr…”
The ringing continued but this time, in frustration, I let out probably the longest hiss known to man. After all my display of annoyance, the phone didn't stop vibrating.
I gradually stood up and fixed my gaze on the phone like somehow it was supposed to shut it up, or maybe I could perform some kind of magic to make it stop vibrating so loudly.
I withdrew my gaze from my phone to the mini clock right next to it, “5:32 am”, I said loudly in surprise.
I started to walk towards my phone with the only intention of saying my piece to the person disrupting my beauty sleep on a Friday morning.
“Don't they know today is Friday and I will be shaking my ass all night in the club”, I thought to myself, with the ugliest frown on my face.
I picked up the phone, “hmm, an unknown number?” the words fell from my lips and I could sense the irritation in my tone, it had increased a large amount.
“Who could this be that doesn't know the appropriate time to call someone?” I said out loud without a genuine thought of inquisition. I honestly just wanted them to stop calling my phone, so I could sleep. It's not too much to ask.
I finally clicked the answer button, “Hello good morning”, I said in a sleepy tone. Deep down I felt like I was going to explode if it ended up being an unnecessary call. Worst case, a butt dial.
I knew I was going to cook someone with mere words if it wasn't worth losing my beauty sleep over. I patiently waited for the caller’s response to my greeting.
“Good morning Ma’am, am I on to Miss Sofia?” The caller asked in a professional tone.
Startled to hear my name, “ye…sss” I stuttered my reply. “Who is this?” I asked almost immediately.
“It’s s…sh..” the caller replied, but her voice was followed by semantic noises, so I couldn't make out what she was trying to say. I could only tell that the caller was a “she”.
“Beep beep” my phone let out a disconnecting cry.
Since I was a young girl, I had always known that suspense wasn't really my thing. Now this caller that woke me up has left me hanging. “It's probably due to the poor network connection”, I continued contemplating in silence.
After several waves of thoughts for what felt like a lifetime, my throat suddenly started closing up on me. It was a weird feeling and only then did I realise that I had skipped my morning routine of two glasses of water.
I went to the kitchen, poured some water in a glass and added some ice cubes. I gulped the first glass of water, and it sent chill shivers down my spine. I had never consumed water so quickly. “This is exactly what I needed” I muttered after a sigh.
I started to pour the second glass of water when I heard “grrr…” It sounded so faint like it was a sound I imagined in my head, so I stopped to listen.
“Grrr…”
This time, I heard the vibration from my phone clearly. I don't know how to explain it, but it felt like I was suddenly pressured to take the call, or was I just anxious?
The ringing stopped, and I continued to enjoy the glass of water.
“ Grrr…”
“Grrr…”
“Grrr…”
It rang again and continued persistently. I stomped my feet severely in annoyance until the glass slipped from my hand. “God!” I yelled angrily, staring at the shattered glass on the floor.
My rage was certainly over the roof as I stomped out of the kitchen, my feet sounded like I was going to war, and the battle song that fueled it was the anger that I felt.
“Hello?” I screamed furiously.
“Oh hello Ma, I called earlier, but it seems our communication was disrupted by the bad network” she said calmly. “I’m so sorry for what bother my calls must be causing you this morning,” she continued.
“It's definitely the network because your voice was distorted, and I could only hear semantic noises” I replied calmly. It was as if her voice and apology somehow calmed my frayed nerves.
Her apology cooled whatever volcano that was about to erupt in me. I almost started to think my feelings towards the call from the onset were invalid, and I was overreacting.
“ Apology accepted. You disrupted my beauty sleep though, and honestly, before now I was infuriated, but it's all good, all is forgiven” I said softly.
“Thank you miss Sofia,” she said, followed by a chuckle. “I was told you didn't like to be disturbed though,” she continued this time with a soft laugh.
“Your father asked me to call you,” she said confidently. She paused, as if waiting for me to tell her to proceed with the story she was telling.
I didn't say a word, but amidst the silence, I could hear her breathing and she could probably hear mine too.
“My name is Fiona, I am your father's personal assistant” she said with poise and grace. I could almost see her clearly in my head but I couldn't paint a picture of her face.
“Fiona? My father's P.A.? ” I said softly in a casual tone, almost talking to myself, while scanning my mind for a supposed Fiona who is a personal assistant to my father.
I remembered someone, but she's most definitely not Fiona. Oh well, who was I kidding? I had barely seen my father in almost two years, so how would I know who Fiona was?
“Yes,” she replied in a calm tone. “ Don Luis asked me to request that you come back home tomorrow”, she continued without hesitation.
I let out a crazy laugh then finally said “Dad and his formalities, why didn’t he call himself?” expecting some sort of response from her, but she surprised me with silence.
“Why does he want to see me?” I asked in a more serious tone.
Silence filled with both ends of the call for a few seconds, then she broke it “Ma’am he needs you” she said softly, her voice had a slight crack.
“How?” I asked
“I’ll see you tomorrow, Miss Fiona” she said blankly, then hung up. I dropped my phone and drifted into paradise without hesitation.
