Chapter3: Her beliefs have always been wrong. She had no realisation of this. Life dragged on for her. Tuitions were plenty and she had ample money in her pocket. Often she used to take her brothers daughters for lunch and gifted her brother mobiles and tabs. Everybody used to love her. Her elder brother’s son came to study in Kolkata and started staying with them and she with a large heart did not take any money. Her brothers and their families loved her. The generous gesture was detrimental to her. She was the star performer. She even travelled to the district where her brother’s daughter was perusing her studies in medicine. Her brother’s wife often invited her to have lunch at their house. She was the star of the show..................... Until 2017 dawned on everyone. The difference was it was pleasant for all and for Surbhi it shattered lot of lies and shattered her life too. First her recovery from a fracture was long and tedious. It severely depleted her dwindling finances. Her birth month came in. May was always a bad month every year but this year it broke Surbhi. On 12th May she as usual left for her tuitions in the morning but on the way suffered a heart attack and she landed in the ICU of a hospital in Kolkata. As she lay attached to a ventilator and real faces of her family members and friends came alive. She was jolted from a trance like life. Surbhi finally was face to face with the ugliness of life. That moment started a journey of disaster and doom which she had to outlive and emerge victorious. It was going to be an ardours task as she was to stay at home with no earnings as the doctor barred her from going to do her tuitions. She owed money to few and that had to be paid back. She was also dependent on her old father’s pension. She now prayed that her old father survived for 2 years for her to settle in. If anything happened to him before that she would be dependent on her brothers and her life would be akin to hell. ALL day she consulted astrologers and prayed to god for her father’s life. Life was hell anyhow. There was no escape for her anymore. No fairytales to be woven. Life was standing in its naked ness. She was at the mercy of her stars and they were not very happy with her. It was her father’s 90th birthday that day and her middle brother’s family was to visit them. Her father’s sister had visited in the morning with sweets and fruits. Surabhi was very happy to see her Pishi as she really liked her pishi. Her Pishi gave her rs1000 for pujas as she was leaving for Us at the end of the month. On Pishi’s insistence she had lunch with her father and Pishi. It was around 7:30pm her brother and his family came with a cake and later on their was a cake cutting ceremony. She did not join them for dinner as shad to take her insulin shot. None even bothered that she was not having dinner with them. Her brother’s daughters and her nephew did not bother to even talk to her. They chatted among themselves and Surbhi was very hurt when none told her a bye while they left. On top of that her father told her brother that he should visit him often as he was his only go to person in need. What an irony evey work was done by Surbhi and her father was taking that credit away from her. That night she cried as she felt lonely and alone. The message finally dawned on her that her brothers and their families don’t accept her as a part of their family anymore. What has changed so much? She didn’t understand. She failed to understand how and why have they changed ?. Shad become a burden for them and that made her cry. That night she cried and prayed doubly hard to God for a small house for herself. God did not listen again. Still there was no money for her. Life seldom gives a second chance and here she was asking for a number of chances in life. Surbhi was a girl with a optimistic attitude and she believed everything will be fine one day.
