CHAPTER 3
Sleep eluded Lena despite her exhaustion. She lay on Ethan's couch, staring at moonlight patterns on the ceiling, mind racing with impossible revelations. Wolf shifters. Her mother alive—or at least not dead as she'd been told. A hidden heritage flowing in her veins. And Ethan's final bombshell: fated pairs. The intensity in his eyes when he'd mentioned it had sent something electric coursing through her. Was that what she'd felt in the forest? That inexplicable pull toward him even in her terrified state? Dawn was breaking when Lena finally surrendered the pretense of sleep. Curiosity drew her to the bookshelf along one wall. Volumes on local history sat alongside leather-bound tomes with titles like "Lineages of North American Packs" and "The Shifter's Guide to Full Moon Cycles." She pulled out a worn journal labeled simply "Pack Law." The handwritten pages detailed hierarchy structures, territory disputes, and something called "The Claiming"—a ritual between fated mates that made her cheeks warm. "Morning research?" Ethan's voice startled her. He stood in the doorway, hair damp from a shower, dressed in jeans and a dark green henley that made his gray eyes even more striking. Lena hurriedly returned the journal to its shelf. "Just trying to understand what I've stepped into," she said, aiming for casual and missing by a mile. Ethan moved to the kitchen. "Coffee? I imagine you didn't sleep much." "Is mind-reading another wolf thing I should know about?" His lips curved into a genuine smile. "Just experience. First shift, first night with the truth—sleep is usually the first casualty." Lena accepted the mug he offered, their fingers brushing. A jolt of awareness shot up her arm, and judging by Ethan's expression, he'd felt it too. "You said you'd take me to meet the pack today," she said after a sip. "How many are there?" "Twenty-seven in our territory. Families mostly, spanning four generations. We're smaller than we once were, but strong." "And they all... shift?" "Most. Some carry the gene but never develop the ability. We call them 'latents.'" He leaned against the counter. "I should warn you—your arrival will cause quite a stir. As Elise Morgan's daughter, you're something of a legend. Her return to the pack was prophesied." Lena nearly choked on her coffee. "Prophesied? By whom?" "By our Seer. Every pack has one, a shifter with the gift of foresight. Ours is Helena, my great-aunt. She's been awaiting your arrival for twenty-five years." "No pressure or anything," Lena muttered. "Look, I appreciate the rescue and the crash course in Werewolf 101, but I have a life. A job. I can't just disappear into the woods to fulfill some prophecy." "No one's asking you to disappear. Many pack members live human lives, work human jobs." "And what if I want nothing to do with any of this?" Ethan's expression grew serious. "Then you'd be denying a fundamental part of yourself. And without training, your wolf will emerge whether you want it to or not, likely at the worst possible moments." The truth of his words struck home. She'd been lucky her first shift had happened at home, not in the middle of the café. "Fine," she conceded. "I'll meet them. But I'm not promising anything beyond that." After a carefully edited call to Mia (food poisoning, staying with a friend), Lena reluctantly agreed to let Ethan drive her to the pack's main settlement. The drive took them deeper into the woods than Lena had ever ventured. Dirt roads gave way to barely visible trails, sunlight filtering through ancient canopies in dappled patterns. "How have I lived here three years and never stumbled across your secret wolf village?" Lena asked. "Protective boundaries. Wards and warnings that make humans suddenly remember urgent appointments elsewhere." "Magic?" She couldn't keep the skepticism from her voice. "Energy manipulation. Our connection to the earth allows certain abilities beyond shifting." The trees opened up to reveal a sprawling clearing. Cabins of various sizes formed a loose semicircle around a central area with fire pits and long tables. It looked like an upscale summer camp—beautiful, remote, and utterly hidden from the world she knew. People moved about with purpose. Children played while adults prepared what looked like a massive outdoor lunch. All activity ceased as Ethan's SUV rolled to a stop. "They know," she whispered, suddenly nervous. "They sensed us coming. Stay close to me." That sounded oddly possessive, but Lena was too overwhelmed to question it as she stepped from the vehicle. All eyes turned to her—curious, eager, some wary. An elderly woman with a silver braid approached first, her amber eyes—so similar to Lena's own—peering straight through her. "Helena," Ethan greeted. "This is—" "Elise's daughter," the woman finished, reaching for Lena's hands. "The spirits whispered of your coming, child. At last, the circle begins to close." Uncomfortable with the cryptic words, Lena extracted her hands. "I'm just Lena. Not whatever legend you've been waiting for." Helena smiled. "The greatest legends never believe they are such." What followed was a blur of introductions. Families with children. Older members who had known her mother. Names washed over her—James and Sarah, the pack's healers; Marcus, Ethan's second-in-command; Luna, a teenager with a gift for communicating with actual wolves. Ethan remained at her side, his hand occasionally brushing the small of her back, sending that same electric awareness through her. Mercifully, the formal introductions gave way to lunch. Lena found herself seated at a long table, plate heaped with food—roasted meats, fresh bread, vegetables from the gardens. "Shifters burn calories faster than humans," explained a friendly woman named Claire. "Especially new ones." Lena was about to respond when a sudden hush fell over the gathering. The hair on her arms stood up, some instinct recognizing a new presence. She turned toward the forest edge, where a group of newcomers had appeared. Their leader stepped forward, and Lena's breath caught. Where Ethan was all controlled power and quiet authority, this man exuded raw intensity. Tall and lean with tousled dark hair and eyes like amber fire, he moved with predatory grace. A jagged scar ran from his temple to jawline, somehow enhancing his striking features. Ethan rose, tension radiating from him. "Damian. You're outside your territory." The newcomer's mouth curved in a dangerous smile. "We were invited, Blackwood. Or did your Seer forget to mention that?" All eyes turned to Helena, who looked untroubled. "The Moonstone Pack has as much right to meet Elise's daughter as we do. The prophecy concerns us all." Damian's gaze shifted to Lena, his eyes widening before warming with interest. "So you're the prodigal daughter. I knew Elise well. She would be proud to see you've finally found your way home." Ethan moved in front of Lena, a subtle but unmistakable claim. "Lena is just beginning to learn our ways. This isn't the time for territorial politics." "On the contrary," Damian countered. "This is exactly the time for clarity. Before you fill her head with Silver Lake propaganda." The tension between the two men was palpable. Lena rose, irritation cutting through her confusion. "I'm standing right here. Maybe stop talking about me like I'm not." Damian laughed, rich and genuine. "She has Elise's spirit too." He extended a hand to her. "Damian Moonstone, Alpha of the eastern territories. And very much interested in hearing what you think of all this, without Blackwood's filtering." Before Ethan could intervene, Lena took the offered hand. The contact sent a shock wave through her system, different from what she felt with Ethan but no less powerful. Damian's eyes locked with hers, surprise flashing in their depths. "Interesting," he murmured, releasing her hand slowly. "That's enough, Moonstone," Ethan growled. "You've made your appearance. Now leave." "A celebration I'm now part of, by your Seer's invitation. Besides, I have information you need. About the hunters." The word sent a ripple of unease through the gathered shifters. Helena stepped forward, suddenly looking every year of her considerable age. "Speak, then. What news?" "Three shifters missing from the northern packs. Bodies found with silver burns and extraction wounds." Damian's playful demeanor vanished, replaced by cold fury. "They're harvesting again." "Harvesting what?" Lena asked, chilled by the ominous word. "Our organs. Our blood. Anything they think holds the secret to our abilities." "Human hunters," Ethan explained grimly. "A group that's tracked our kind for generations." "And they're moving south," Damian added. "Following rumors of a special shifter. A female with rare abilities." His eyes bored into Lena's. "Someone like you." The weight of every stare pressed down on her. It was too much. She fled toward the tree line, seeking solitude to process the bombshells that kept dropping. She found a fallen log at the edge of the clearing and sank onto it. What had she stumbled into? Less than twenty-four hours ago, her biggest concern had been making rent. Now she was caught between rival wolf packs, the subject of some mystical prophecy, and apparently being hunted by humans who wanted to dissect her. "Overwhelming, isn't it?" Damian's approach was quiet. "May I join you?" Lena tensed. Ethan had clearly wanted her to stay away from Damian, but there was something compelling about the rival alpha. "I'm not sure Ethan would approve," she said carefully. "I'm not concerned with Blackwood's approval. But I am concerned with yours." "Why? You don't know me." "I knew your mother. And I recognize the position you're in. Suddenly thrust into a world you never knew existed, with expectations you never asked for." The sincerity in his voice resonated with her. "What did Helena mean about a prophecy concerning us all?" "There's an old prediction about a shifter born of two bloodlines who would bridge the divided packs and bring a new era. Many believe you're that shifter." "That's absurd. I'm no one special." "And yet, here you are. Drawing two rival alphas to the same table for the first time in decades." A low growl announced Ethan's arrival. He stood several yards away, his stance aggressive, eyes flashing with silver. "I told you to stay away from her, Moonstone." Damian rose lazily. "And I don't take orders from you, Blackwood. Ever." Lena stood quickly. "Stop it, both of you. I'm not a bone for you to fight over." "This isn't about possession," Ethan said, not taking his eyes off Damian. "It's about protection. He can't be trusted." "Says the man who's kept secrets from his own pack for years," Damian countered. "Does Lena know about the Claiming Ceremony you're planning? About what really happened to her mother?" Ethan lunged forward. Lena stepped between them, hands up. "Enough! I don't know what grudge you two have, but I want no part of it. I just found out I'm a shifter. I need time to process that before I can deal with pack politics and prophecies." To her surprise, both men backed down. "You're right," Ethan said. "This isn't fair to you." He shot a warning look at Damian. "We have a truce for today. But this discussion isn't over." "It never is with us, is it?" Damian turned to Lena with a completely different expression—open, almost warm. "When you're ready to hear the full story—all of it—come find me. Eastern ridge, where the river bends. Any night." With that, he retreated, rejoining his pack members at the edge of the clearing. "You shouldn't be alone with him," Ethan said quietly. "Not until you understand the dynamics between our packs." "Then explain them to me," Lena challenged. "What exactly is a Claiming Ceremony? What happened to my mother? What are you keeping from me?" Ethan's expression clouded. "It's complicated." "Try me. I'm apparently part of a mystical wolf prophecy—I think I can handle complicated." "Not here. Tonight, after the feast, I'll tell you everything. I promise." "Everything," she insisted. "Or I walk away from all of this." "Everything," he agreed, resignation in his voice. "But Lena... some truths change everything. Are you sure you're ready for that?" She thought of her life just days ago—ordinary, predictable, safe. That life was gone now, whether she wanted it to be or not. "I'm already changed," she said simply. "I might as well know why." As they walked back toward the gathering, Lena felt the weight of two gazes following her—Ethan's concerned gray eyes and, from the shadows, Damian's intense amber ones. Between them lay secrets, rivalries, and her destiny. Whatever that destiny was, she was beginning to suspect it would be nothing like the quiet life she'd planned for herself.
