CHAPTER 5.1

“It hard to not be scared to an Alpha who has me tied to his bed, don’t you think?” “I know. It's for your own safety. Also, call me Curran. You are my wife and my mate. I think we should get the formalities out of the way.” I roll the name around in my mouth and find that I like the taste of it. Curran. Curran. I can imagine moaning it as he f***s me... what the f**k? Where did that come from? “Okay, Curran. Please explain to me why I’m tied to your bed.” “For your own protection.” Um, what? I was tied to the bed for my own protection? The look of disbelief must be clear on my face, because he hands me a key. “I know that sounds like bullshit. Here's the key. You're free to let yourself lose at any given time but hear me out.” I should unlock myself and run far away from here. Yeah, that would be the sensible thing to do. But where will I run to? Back to Dark Moon pack that is full of people who want to see me dead? Become a rogue wolf-less human running around? I have spent just five hours or so in this pack, and this is the first time that I feel safe, which is crazy. I am chained to a big bed with an Alpha looming over me and I feel safe. I want to hear him out. I want to understand him. His face looks so haunted, and I feel an urge to comfort him. I have been feeling this way ever since the ritual at the bone tree. “Okay. Let’s hear what you have to say.” I see the exhale of relief move through his body and resist the urge to chuckle. I'm a nobody, yet the idea that my actions have even a tiny effect on him passes through my body in a rush. “About eighty years ago, my grandfather committed a great atrocity against of coven of powerful wolf-witches. Their name was Emberveil Coven. They were wolves, but they also carried the power of fire in their blood. They were very powerful, and every Alpha knew that if he ever aligned with them, he would be unstoppable.” “I’ve never heard of the name. Emberveil Coven, you say?” “Yes. Their legend was lost to time. My grandfather, Alpha King Aldric Sharpblade wanted to marry the witch head of the coven so that his empire would become indestructible, and when she didn’t agree, he became consumed by rage, and he slaughtered them.” “That is horrible.” “I am ashamed of that part of my history.” I look into his eyes and realize he’s telling the truth. This part of his lineage haunts him, perhaps not just in memory. “One witch survived, and in her rage, she laid a curse on my bloodline. It was a three-part curse. The first part of it was that on every full moon, the Alpha of the Sharpblade line will transform into a shadow beast.” I gasp. Every wolf has heard the tales of the shadow beast in one way or the other. They were the thing of nightmares that. Haunted bad werewolf pups. The beasts are rumored to be twice the size of normal wolves, wreathed in smoke with voided eyes. They are locked up in silver chains upon transformation, or they will level any pack in a matter of hours. How can this be? It makes no sense to me, yet the truth is evident in Curran’s eyes. Truth and shame. “The second part of the curse declares that no Sharpblade line shall know the joy of his mate bond. She severed us from ever knowing our mates or finding companionship.” Every wolf lived their life with the hope that one day they will meet the one the moon goddess made as their other half. To have that taken away from you must be horrible. “I’m sorry.” I say, and Curran looks at me with vulnerable eyes. I feel honored, in a weird type of way. But then, Curran is no fool. A part of me knows that he’s telling me this sob story for a reason. “The last part of the curse is why I need your help. The curse can only be broken by a descendant of the Emberveil Coven. When the witch cursed us, she proclaimed that by the third generation, if the curse isn’t broken by the third Alpha’s thirtieth birthday, the shadow beast will consume me and be all that is left.” Oh s**t. That sounds bad. But what did I have to do with that? How could I help with the curse? “I’m sorry that is a burden you have to bear, but I don’t understand what it has to do with me.” “The Bone Keeper suggested that I find a wolf who hadn’t manifested yet. She thinks that that unique position may allow you to be immune from me to an extent, and as an extension, help me control the beast. I need to break this curse, and I’ll be thirty in four months, so I don’t have a lot of time. Will you help me?”
