1. Run Dont Get Caught
…..My calves were burning, but I pressed further into the unknowing forest, a small area of light. I had to get out of here. I had to reach the light, to escape the creature chasing me. I heard a twig snap, and my heart started to beat faster. It was getting close, and it seemed like the light was only getting farther, but I didn’t stop. I continued running as quickly as I could go; I was going to make it. I tried to look back, but in doing so, I tripped...
I woke up sweating like crazy. I grabbed my phone to check the time 4:30 am. Ugh! Getting out of bed and making my way downstairs, I decided to go to the kitchen to get some water. As I was filling my glass, my best friend and brother’s mate Elaine walked in.
“Have the nightmare again?”
“Yup.” I took a drink and looked down at the tile floor.
“Oh Akira, I wish there was something I could do.”
I smiled. “I know El, me too. I’m going to get ready to train. It’s my last day for it.”
“Ok, you know, having a mate isn’t that bad. Well, maybe morning breath.” We started laughing, not noticing my brother in the doorway.
“Hey! It’s not that bad.” He walked toward El wrapping his arms around her. I walked out smiling and shaking my head. Time to train….
It’s taking me a bit longer than usual to get ready. Someone had taken my training shoes and tied them to a tall branch in a tree.
“ALEKI!!! Why are my shoes in a tree.” I looked back at the door to see my brother, who was laughing like a buffoon.
“I couldn’t help it. They begged me to do it.”
“Yeah, uh-huh, sure?” I shook my head and jumped onto the tree, climbing to retrieve my shoes. I looked below me, and Aleki was on the ground laughing. I will show him. I climbed down the tree as quietly as I could, got low to the ground, and hid behind a bush.
I could hear my brother getting up. “Akira? You still in the tree? Akira!?”
He started heading closer. I readied myself to pounce. But he managed to move to the side resulting in me landing face-first into the ground.
“Ugh. Aleki!”
I got up, wiping away the dirt, shaking my head, and walked towards the woods. I went to my favorite tree, grabbed my bag from the cubby hole, stripped my clothes, put them in the bag, and put it back into the tree. I then thought of my wolf form and in a split second was a wolf. I jumped around happily, my pure white fur moving in the wind. I took off in a full sprint and put all my thoughts into training. Soon my thoughts turned to memories.
…” Mommy! Mommy! Look what I made you.” I jumped up and down, proud of my little creation—four stick figures each with our names above. I ran and handed it to her. She smiled and scooped me up, hugging my petite frame.
“Oh Akira, it’s amazing it deserves to be in an art gallery.” She put me down and went to put it on the fridge along with all my other pictures. She turned back to me, smiling. “Are you hungry?” I nodded and tried to jump up onto the chair but missed slipping to the floor. My mom ran over and scooped me up. Looking all over, I giggled, trying to wiggle out of her grasp. “Mommy, I want mac’n’cheese.” She laughed but put me down on the chair and started making my favorite food. I began to play with the silverware when Aleki came in and sat in the chair beside me.
Mommy turned and smiled at him, then went back to cooking. He turned to me with an evil-looking grin. He brought his hand up and put something in front of me. A spider crawled towards me, and I screamed. “GET IT AWAY!!” Mommy turned around and grabbed the spider just in time before it got to me. I looked over at Aleki, who was laughing at me. “That was mean.” Just as he was going to say something, Daddy ran into the house looking worried. “Get to the basement now.” He grabbed me and ran towards the stairs, Aleki following behind. Once we made it to the basement, Daddy put us in a room and locked us in. I started panicking, and Aleki tried everything he could think of to calm me, but it didn’t work. We stayed in there for a week before another pack member found us.
I was coloring another picture for mommy when we heard the door unlock and the knob rattled. Aleki got in front of me and growled protectively. “Shhhh. It’s fine. It’s Alpha Kyle. Your uncle.” We breathed a sigh of relief, and I ran up to hug him. “Where are Mommy and Daddy?” I looked at him quizzically. He looked sad. We walked to his home and sat in his living room. His mate Pearl was holding me after she gave me a popsicle. Aleki grabbed my hand as if knowing what was about to be said. “I am so sorry, but your parents are gone. Murdered by rogues.” He looked to my brother and ushered him to go to his office to speak. Aleki is 13 and understands more than my 5-year-old mind can. They had been in there a while, but Aleki looked more grown-up than ever when they came out. “We are leaving. Don’t worry. We will be back. But we are going somewhere safe for now. Come, let’s go pack our bags.” I looked at Pearl, tears at the edge of her eyes. I got off her lap and followed Aleki, my small body trying to keep up but couldn’t comprehend what was going on….
It’s been 12 years I can remember that day as if it was yesterday. We have been back for six years. That’s when I met Elaine. She was a year older than me, but we became friends instantly. Even though we look entirely different, we are more so the same. She is blonde with light skin, and I have dark brown hair and tanned skin. When I brought her to meet Aleki, he seemed intrigued by her and always tried to steal her away. It weirded her out, but she liked the attention but never gave in and always hung out with me. She turned 17 last year and realized that she and Aleki were true mates. True mates are rare, and I was excited to see it happen in my lifetime. I looked up to see myself coming to a clearing with a small lake and jumped in to cool off. I noticed the sun shining higher and decided to head back home.
As I was nearing my home, I didn’t bother to shift and just walked into the bathroom connected to my room. Then I shifted to my Human form and got into the shower.
I stepped out of the shower, wrapping my towel around me. I got dressed in something simple and went downstairs to get food. I made myself some mac’n’cheese, then went into the living room, plopped down on the couch, turned on the tv, and hang out by myself since my brother and his mate were out on their weekly date. I turned the tv off and got up off the couch. Just as they had returned, Elaine had a dress bag in her hand and a smirk on her face. “Look what I found for you!” She handed it to me, and I looked inside. What I saw made me smile real big. It was the most beautiful dress I had ever seen.
I woke up and glanced at the dress still on the chair where I left it. I smiled. I may not want to be taken, but I still want to look good. I went to relieve myself then started a shower to get ready for today. I got out, walked over to my mirror, and started working on my makeup. Elaine came in to do my hair. It took me about 30 mins to do my makeup, and Elaine took an hour to do my hair, but by the time I was ready, I looked perfect. She ran into my room, grabbed my dress, and helped me put it on. If I thought I looked good without my dress, I looked even better with it on.
We went downstairs. I had a suitcase packed even though I didn’t think I needed it, but Aleki insisted just in case. “You look, Beautiful Sis.” I smiled at him and hugged him but not for too long because the bus would be here soon. I walked to the door, grabbed my suitcase, took one more look back at my Teary-eyed brother and sad-looking Elaine, and then I was off down the road to wait for the bus. I had just got to the end of the drive when the bus pulled around the corner. It stopped, and I got on looked around to find Jayce sitting near the back. I sat down next to him and smiled. He just kept looking me up and down, so I punched him in the shoulder. “Hey, What was that for? I couldn’t help looking at the beautiful girl who sat down next to me.” He smirked, and I just shook my head and looked ahead of us. I looked back over to him with a quizzical look on my face. “why didn’t you drive?” He looked so sad. “Dad kicked me out and kept the car; I should have known this was coming. You know how he thinks my kind is a disgrace.” “Oh, who told him about you being Bi?” “I don’t know, but I bet it was my sister Lily. You know how she likes to stir drama.” I shook my head. Lily has been a massive pain since the Alpha’s son took an interest in her a few months back, and then a few weeks ago, he suddenly stopped all contact with her. She wasn’t too happy, and we don’t know why he did it. He may be my cousin, but we don’t talk much. The bus suddenly stopped. “WE’RE HERE.” I covered my ears, and so did Jayce. God, Lily is loud. Jayce got up and flicked Lily on the back of the head. “Hey! Stop that you will mess up my hair. I am going to be the future Luna of this pack, so you better respect me.” She got up and sashayed her way off of the bus. I snorted and laughed, then made on my way off the bus.
I wanted a drink, but we had to wait for the Alpha speech and be called up to receive our ratings and tags. Thank god we don’t have seating arrangements. I don’t think I could have sat near Lily and her insistent babbling. Jayce and I walked closer to the back of the room. We sat down and waited for everyone to get settled and the speech to start. After a few minutes, there was a commotion upfront. Lily and another She-wolf were in an argument and looked close to shifting and fighting. Alpha Owen, my cousin, came over and broke up the fight. Both girls seemed to be drooling over him. Ick! I don’t understand why anyone would want a mate to be tied down to someone and have their pups. Everything finally got settled, and everyone was in their seats. Alpha Kyle walked up on stage. He looked around then began his speech.
“Greetings everyone, We are here for the Annual Chase. First, everyone will be called up by pack and order of strength and beauty, then get their tags, then the She-wolves will go to their assigned spot to run. The Males will wait at the main gate. She-wolves, if you make it to the safe zone, you are safe for another year. But no one has ever made it. Ever. With that, let us start the ratings, and my pack will be up first.” He walked off, and the rating announcer came up on stage. He started calling out names and ranks by the last name alphabetically, but soon my name came up. The announcer looked a bit taken back but then continued. “Akira Hays, Strength 10/10, Beauty 10/10.” I looked over at Jayce, shock written all over his face. I stood up, not wanting it to be repeated, and walked up to the front. No one has ever scored perfectly. Not even the Alphas. I could feel everyone staring and knew my chances of making it just vanished.
The rest of the Announcing went by in a blur. I just went back to my seat and tried to make myself invisible, which was impossible. It was coming close to the actual chase, and I was still in a daze until I noticed a bit of commotion. Jayce nudged my side and shook his head to the stage. There on the stage was The Blood Night Alpha and his son, soon to be Alpha. Alpha Kyle came up on stage looking terrified. “I’m sorry, I didn’t know you were coming. I would have waited.” “No, it’s fine. Just get his tags and rate him.” And just like that, The Blood Night Alpha was gone, and his son still stood there. It seemed like he was searching the crowd for someone but couldn’t find them. He turned to the announcer and nodded his head. “A-Alpha Gavin Night, Strength 10/10, B-beauty 10/10.” The announcer hurried off the stage. I looked back to Alpha Gavin, and it was like I was on cloud nine. He was gorgeous. He had short, scraggly blonde hair, and his muscles were almost bursting through his shirt. Jayce hit me in the side again, getting me out of my trance. “It’s time to go. You are in section A. You should hurry.” I nodded and took off, and it seems I’m the only one in this section. I looked over and seen Lily walking towards me. “Ugh, can you believe it? I’m an in section P. Me! I should be here with you. I mean, I am gorgeous.” I snorted at her, and she just scoffed and walked away. I turned toward the woods and grimaced. I will make it out. I will not be claimed. I can do this. I got into a running stance and waited for the gunshot to ring out, and I was off running as fast as I could. Soon I hit the woods. I looked around and didn’t see anyone else. I was the first to make it. I pushed harder and made it to the red line and shifted, ripping my beautiful dress. I took off even faster. I am going to make it.... 10 yards.... 20.... 30... I had just passed the 40-yard mark when I heard someone behind me. I took a glance back and seen a giant black wolf gaining on me. Turning back, I pushed myself harder, and soon, he was far in the distance. I could see it in the Safe Zone. I passed the 50-yard sign and jumped into the clearing. I landed wrong and twisted my paw, howling out in pain. Many people rushed to me, and one covered me with a towel as I shifted back, holding my wrist already almost healed. I looked back to see Gavin in a robe, his eyes not leaving me. He motioned for one of the people to come with him. I turned back and headed for the final tent. I stepped in, and Aleki and Elaine were there. Elaine handed me a bag. It's the same dress. I quickly put it on, and we headed back. “Wow, Sis, you made it!” we got into the car and headed back to the main area. I got out of the car to see Alpha Kyle and Alpha Gavin having a heated discussion. I turned towards the snack tent and went in and noticed Jayce was already by the chocolate fountain. “OMG, Akira, you made it.” we jumped up and down, squealing. “Did you find anyone?” “No, I am just going to be alone forever.” Jayce pouted. I hugged him, and there was a loud growl, and I was suddenly ripped off of him. I was turning to see who was holding me. Fear soared through me when I realized it was Alpha Gavin.
