For several agonizing seconds, complete silence hung over the high tower. Nobody dared to move, the wind howling around them as the ruined capital burned in the distance.
The Dragon King stood motionless at the edge of the shattered marble platform. He stared down at Elara with a look of profound, unreadable horror, as if she were speaking an ancient, forgotten tongue that had ceased to exist centuries ago.
"Your mother is dead," he said at last, his deep voice barely a whisper against the gale. "I buried her with my own hands."
Elara shook her head fiercely, clutching Kael’s arm. "I saw her. She was standing in a chamber beneath this very palace!"
"You saw a trick of the mind," the King countered, his golden eyes narrowing in disbelief. "A residual shadow. A lingering memory trapped in the ley lines."
"No!" Elara stepped out from behind Kael, her voice ringing with stubborn conviction. "It was not a memory. She spoke to me! She is waiting!"
"She has been dead for eighteen long years, girl!" the King snapped, though a sudden tremor in his jaw betrayed his cold facade.
"I know what I saw," Elara insisted, taking a step toward him. "I felt her spirit."
Kael immediately moved, placing his muscular frame between his father and Elara, his broadsword still held low but ready. "Father... if there is even the smallest possibility that Queen Lyria survived that night—"
"There isn't!"
The King’s voice cracked on the final word, the raw, violent sound echoing across the empty sky. For the first time since Elara had encountered the formidable tyrant, she did not hear authority or cold malice in his tone.
She heard pure, devastating pain.
Elara’s breath hitched as she studied his weathered face. "You watched her die, didn't you?"
The King looked down at her, the mask of royal power slipping further to reveal the hollow eyes of a grieving man. "Yes. I held her as her magic burned out."
"Then why do you look so terrified?" Elara pressed softly. "Why do your eyes tell a different story?"
Before the Dragon King could formulate an answer, the entire palace beneath their feet groaned violently. A deep, ominous crack split across the floor of the high tower, sending marble dust swirling into the night air.
Kael grabbed Elara’s hand, his fingers locking firmly around hers. "We don't have time for this debate. The sky is tearing open. We need to get below the palace into the catacombs."
The Dragon King slowly nodded, drawing his dark cloak around his shoulders. "For once, my son... we are in agreement."
They retreated from the exposed balcony, descending into the interior of the Royal Palace.
The grand halls of the dragon royalty were unlike anything Elara had ever imagined. Massive golden pillars stretched toward vaulted ceilings adorned with breathtaking, ancient frescoes depicting the creation of Aetheria. Intricate dragon motifs were carved into the walls, their eyes inlaid with glowing gemstone crystals that pulsed with natural magic.
Yet, the magnificent palace was clearly crumbling from within.
Spiderweb cracks ran through the pristine white marble corridors. A strange, sickly blue light leaked from the fissures in the stone, pulsing to the rhythm of a erratic, distant heartbeat.
Panicked servants and armored guards rushed through the grand halls in a state of utter frenzy. Some were human, while others were noble dragons who had assumed their human forms to navigate the tight spaces.
Every single one of them froze the moment they spotted Elara walking beside Prince Kael.
Hushed, terrified whispers rippled through the crowds like wildfire:
"The Moon-Born girl..."
"She broke the sovereign bond..."
"She looks just like the lost Queen!"
"Has the King brought back our salvation... or our doom?"
Elara kept her head down, her chest tightening as she quickened her pace. She hated the way they stared at her—not as a living, breathing person with fears and desires, but as a mythical savior, a living weapon, an omen of the end times.
Kael felt the sudden tension in her grip and leaned in closer, his low voice brushing against her ear. "Ignore them, Elara. Don't listen to their idle babble."
"I'm trying," she muttered, staring straight ahead. "It's hard when every eye in the room is burning into my back."
"You'll get used to it," Kael said softly.
"I don't think I ever want to get used to this," she replied, a faint shiver running down her spine.
A small, genuine smile touched the corner of Kael’s lips amidst the surrounding chaos. "That may be the first sensible thing you've said all night."
Elara shot him an incredulous glance. "Are you seriously making jokes right now? The world is falling apart!"
"I've been fighting my father and dodging falling mountains just to keep you breathing," Kael murmured, his golden eyes softening as he looked at her. "A little humor keeps the shadows from winning."
The Dragon King led them deeper into the fortress, bypassing the main throne room and descending into a subterranean corridor of ancient, unpolished granite. He came to a sudden halt before a massive, door made of pure, matte-black obsidian.
The door had no handles, keyholes, or hinges. The only feature on its smooth surface was a glowing golden seal shaped like a stylized dragon's heart.
The King stepped forward and pressed his bare palm against the ancient emblem. He channeled his fiery magic, but the stone remained completely cold. Nothing happened.
He growled, channeling a stronger surge of aura, but the golden symbol repelled his force.
Elara took a step past Kael. "Move out of the way."
The King turned his head, staring down at her with cold skepticism. "You think an ancient titan-door will respond to a human girl when it denies the King?"
"I don't know," Elara said honestly. "But your magic isn't working."
She stepped up to the massive slab of obsidian and slowly raised her right hand, placing her palm directly over the glowing dragon heart.
The moment her skin touched the stone, the crescent mark on her wrist flared with brilliant, silver radiance. The ancient obsidian door let out a deep, resonant hum that vibrated straight through the floorboards.
Slowly, the colossal black doors ground open, parting in the middle to reveal a pitch-black descent.
Kael stared in absolute shock. "My father’s magic couldn't even scratch it... but it opened for you instantly."
The Dragon King said nothing, his face shadowed, though his jaw clenching revealed his inner turmoil.
Elara didn't wait. She crossed the threshold, stepping onto a narrow, spiral staircase carved from damp stone that plummeted into darkness. Cold, stale air rushed up to meet them, carrying the faint scent of ozone and crushed flowers.
Kael followed closely behind her, his hand resting on his sword, while the King brought up the rear.
As they descended deeper into the depths of Aetheria, the muffled chaos of the palace above slowly died away. The screams of the panicked crowd, the clashing of guard weapons, and the roaring dragonfire faded into total silence.
Down here, the only sound was a faint, rhythmic thumping echoing from deep beneath the foundation.
*Thump... Thump... Thump...*
Elara halted on a stone step, holding her breath. "Do you hear that? It sounds like... a heartbeat."
Kael nodded grimly. "The Heart Gate. The central node of the realm's magic."
The Dragon King paused two steps behind them, his golden eyes fixed on the darkness below. "No," he whispered, his voice laced with a sudden, disturbing dread.
Elara turned back to look at him. "What do you mean, no?"
"That rhythm isn't coming from the Heart Gate," the King revealed, his knuckles white against his sword hilt. "That pulse is far older... and far darker."
The staircase finally ended, opening up into a colossal, circular chamber constructed from polished silver slate.
In the exact center of the room stood an immense stone archway, sealed by a massive door crafted from an unknown, luminescent metal. Thousands of shimmering silver runes flowed across its surface like liquid mercury.
At the center of the archway was the exact crescent symbol that marked Elara’s wrist.
The moment Elara entered the room, the mark on her arm burned with white-hot intensity, matching the light of the door.
Kael looked around the pristine, undisturbed chamber in awe. "This vault... it hasn't been opened since the First Dragon War. It’s entirely untouched."
Elara was drawn to the door like a moth to a flame. As she stepped closer, the fluid silver symbols began to shift and rearrange themselves, forming a legible sentence in an ancient, flowing script.
*Only the daughter of two worlds may pass through the veil.*
Elara swallowed hard, reading the words aloud. "I... I am the daughter of a human father and a Moon-Born mother. Two worlds."
The Dragon King stepped into the chamber, his eyes wide as he stared at the glowing script. "No... that is not what the prophecy means."
Elara looked back over her shoulder. "What are you talking about?"
He walked toward her, his heavy armor clanking against the silver floor. "Your mother was not simply a Moon-Born sorceress from the wild lands, Elara."
"Then who was she?!"
The King closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, as if releasing a secret that had tormented him for two decades. "She was the last true Lineage Queen of Aetheria. The pure-blood ruler before I took the crown."
Elara’s breath caught in her throat. Her mind spun violently. "My mother... was a Queen? Royal blood?"
Kael turned sharply toward his father, his eyes flashing with betrayal. "You kept this from me? You told the entire kingdom she was an outsider!"
"Because I wanted the past buried forever!" the King roared back, his voice echoing off the circular walls. "I wanted to protect the realm from the bloodlines that brought the Void upon us!"
Elara turned back to the door, her heart hammering. "So my mother was ancient royalty... and my father was just a human warrior from the lower realm?"
The Dragon King looked away, his expression turning strangely solemn. "Yes. A human who crossed the mortal rift."
"A forbidden love story," Elara murmured bitterly, a sad smile touching her lips. "And I am the living proof of their crime."
Silence fell over the vault.
Elara reached out and placed her hand flat against the center of the silver door. The mercury runes exploded into a blinding flash of starlight, and with a heavy, grinding sound, the massive doors slowly parted.
A thick, cool silver mist spilled out from the newly opened room, carrying the sweet fragrance of night-blooming jasmine.
Elara stepped across the threshold. Kael instantly followed, his hand still on his hilt.
However, as the Dragon King attempted to follow them, an invisible wall of force slammed against his chest, throwing him violently backward onto the slate floor!
*BOOM!*
The King pushed himself up, staring in shock at the threshold.
Elara stopped and looked back. "Why aren't you coming in? What happened?"
The King shook his head slowly, staring at the shimmering barrier that blocked his path. "I cannot enter. The magic denies me."
"Why?!"
"Because your mother sealed this sanctuary specifically against my aura," the King confessed softly, a bitter edge to his voice. "She knew that if she vanished, I would burn the entire world searching for her."
Elara stared at him, confused and conflicted. "Why would she lock you out if you loved her?"
"Because she was terrified of what I was willing to become to keep her safe," the King replied, his head bowing slightly. "She knew I would compromise my very soul."
Elara didn't know what to believe anymore. The tyrant standing outside the door seemed less like a monster and more like a man trapped in a cage of his own making.
She turned back to explore the hidden sanctuary.
Inside the threshold lay a breathtaking, hidden subterranean garden. Luminous, star-shaped flowers bloomed beneath a domed glass ceiling that reflected the magical aurora above. Silver vines climbed up marble pillars, glowing with faint, ethereal light.
And standing in the absolute center of the garden was a woman.
She wore a flowing, pure-white gown that swept the floor. Her long, silver hair cascaded over her shoulders like liquid moonlight. Her eyes were closed, her hands folded peacefully over her chest.
Elara forgot how to breathe. The world seemed to stop spinning.
"Mom...?" she choked out.
The woman’s eyelids fluttered, slowly opening to reveal brilliant, shimmering silver eyes—the exact same color and shape as Elara’s own.
"My little moon..." the woman whispered softly.
Elara’s knees trembled, nearly buckling beneath her weight. A sob escaped her throat, and she broke into a sprint toward her mother.
*CLANG!*
Elara slammed face-first into an invisible, glass-like barrier just a few feet away from the woman. She stumbled back, then immediately slapped both of her hands against the barrier, tears spilling down her face.
"Mom! Mom, it's me! Let me in!"
The woman offered a heartbreaking, gentle smile, her glowing silver eyes brimming with sadness. "I knew you would find your way here, my sweet girl..."
"You're alive!" Elara wept, striking the barrier again. "They said you were dead! They said you were burned to ash!"
"I am neither fully alive, nor truly dead, my child," Lyria answered softly. Her eyes shifted past Elara, locking onto Prince Kael, and then toward the shadowed doorway where the King stood watching from afar. "The King... he is outside?"
"Yes," Elara sobbed. "He brought us down here."
"Is he still breathing? Is he uncorrupted?"
"Yes," Elara said, wiping her face.
Lyria’s expression softened into a look of profound relief. "Then... he kept his promise to me. After all these painful years."
Elara shook her head in frustration, her hands resting against the cold barrier. "What promise?! He hunted me down! He threatened my life! He wanted to use my power!"
"No, Elara," Lyria corrected gently. "He needed your power to maintain the seal."
"He wanted to control me!"
"He wanted to control the Heartstone," Lyria clarified, stepping closer to her side of the barrier. "Because if he holds the power, the darkness cannot target you."
Elara froze, taking a step back as cold horror settled in her gut. "The darkness... the Void? Why would the Void want me?"
"The Void does not want you, my child," Lyria revealed gravely. "The Void wants the Heartstone. And you... you are its living, breathing vessel."
Kael stepped up beside Elara, his jaw set in a hard line. "What does that mean, Queen Lyria? How can a mortal body hold a primordial artifact?"
Lyria turned her gaze toward the prince. "The Heartstone chose Elara because her veins carry both the resilient spirit of humanity and the ancient magic of the dragon lords."
Kael’s golden eyes narrowed. "But she possesses no dragon form. She cannot shift."
"She does not need to," Lyria said with a faint, regal smile. "She carries the blood of the First Queen. The source of all dragon magic."
Kael went completely silent, staring at Elara with a renewed sense of wonder and grave responsibility.
Elara pressed her palms against the barrier, her voice cracking with years of buried pain. "If you were here all along... why did you abandon me on Earth? Why did you leave me alone?!"
"I never wanted to leave you, Elara," Lyria whispered, her voice breaking. "I was taken."
"Taken by whom? By the King?"
Lyria’s face darkened, her silver eyes filling with a phantom terror. "By the Void."
Kael’s hand reflexively gripped his sword. "What?"
"Eighteen years ago, on the night you were born," Lyria explained, her eyes fixed on Elara. "A tear opened beneath this very palace. A tendril of the Void crept into the world, reaching directly for your cradle."
"I... I don't remember any of that," Elara murmured.
"You were a newborn," Lyria said softly. "I fought the dark entity with everything I had. And your father... the King... fought beside me until his scales burned."
Elara stared in utter disbelief. "The King fought to save me?"
"Yes," Lyria confirmed. "We managed to push the darkness back, but the cost was absolute. To keep the Void from tracking your soul, we had to make the dark entities believe I was dead, and we had to hide you across the dimensional rift in a world devoid of magic."
Kael stepped closer to the barrier. "Then who sealed you inside this garden vault?"
Lyria looked down at her hands. "I sealed myself inside."
"Why?!" Elara cried.
"Because during the battle... the Void touched me," Lyria confessed in a hollow whisper.
With trembling hands, Lyria slowly pulled back the flowing white sleeve of her gown.
Elara gasped, taking a horrified step back.
Lyria’s pale arm was completely covered in sickening, jet-black veins that twitched and pulsed beneath her skin like living parasites, emitting a faint, dark mist.
"The corruption is rooted in my soul," Lyria revealed tears glistening in her eyes. "The Void is inside me."
Kael instantly drew his obsidian sword, its sharp tip glinting in the garden's light. "Can the corruption spread? Can it escape this barrier?"
Lyria shook her head. "Not while this sanctuary remains intact."
"What happens if the barrier breaks?" Elara asked, her voice trembling.
Lyria looked directly into her daughter's eyes with desperate intensity. "If the barrier falls... the Void will use my body as a conduit to reach you and claim the Heartstone."
Elara stepped forward again, her hand glowing with silver starlight. "Then let me use my magic to heal you! I can burn the dark veins away!"
"NO!" Lyria shouted, her voice echoing with sudden authority. "You must never break this seal!"
"Mom, I just found you! I won't leave you locked in a cage!"
"Elara, listen to me!" Lyria pleaded, pressing her corrupted hand against the glass barrier. "If this seal is broken, the tear will not just destroy Aetheria... it will open a gateway directly into your human world!"
Elara froze in her tracks, her blood running ice-cold. "My world... Earth?"
"Yes," Lyria said, her breath coming in ragged gasps. "The Void will consume both realms!"
Kael grabbed Elara’s shoulder, his expression grim. "Elara... we need to fall back. This place is compromised."
Before they could turn around, the bright, luminous flowers in the garden suddenly withered and turned to black dust. The peaceful silver light in the dome vanished, plunging the entire chamber into absolute, suffocating darkness!
Lyria’s eyes widened in sheer horror. "No... no, it's too late!"
"What's happening?!" Kael demanded, stepping in front of Elara with his sword raised.
"The seal... it's failing!"
*CRACK!*
A jagged, pitch-black fissure split open across the silver floor of the garden. Then another. And another.
Thick, oily black smoke began pouring out of the ground, smelling of sulfur and rotting magic. The Void had breached the sanctuary.
Lyria slammed her hands against the barrier from the inside, her voice urgent and panicked. "Elara! Listen to me very carefully!"
"Mom!"
"When we leave this place, your father will tell you that you must channel the Heartstone to destroy the rift!"
Elara frowned through her tears. "Isn't... isn't that what I'm supposed to do?!"
"NO!" Lyria screamed over the sound of shattering stone. "Do not channel the Heartstone into the rift! The Heartstone is NOT the weapon!"
