chapter 1: The Silver Mark and the Dragon Prince
The night the sky turned silver, Elara Vale dreamed of a dragon—and a man with gold eyes that burned brighter than fire. It wasn’t a dream that dissolved with the morning light. She could still feel the phantom cold beneath her bare feet and hear the deafening roar of wings slicing through a pitch-black abyss. In the vision, a massive black dragon with scales like sapphire-dusted obsidian had stepped into the pale moonlight. It had lowered its colossal head, stared directly into her soul, and whispered her name. "Elara..." Elara gasped, sitting bolt upright in her small bedroom. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. Outside, torrents of rain battered the windowpanes of her quiet house in Evermere. “It was just a dream,” she breathed, trying to steady her trembling hands. Lifting her hand to push back her damp hair, her gaze froze. Blood drained from her face. Etched onto the soft flesh of her inner wrist was a glowing silver mark—a dragon coiled tightly around a crescent moon. When she touched it, a jolt of liquid heat shot straight to her core. Pain gasped through her, and as quickly as it had erupted, the mark sank beneath her skin, fading into an ethereal scar. Before she could process the impossible magic, a heavy knock rattled her door. "Elara? Are you awake?" Elara scrambled to pull her blanket over her arm. "Yes, Aunt Mira!" The door creaked open, revealing her aunt’s pale, sharp face. "You were screaming in your sleep." "It was just a nightmare," Elara lied, her voice tight. "A dragon..." At the word *dragon*, Aunt Mira went dead silent. The color drained from her cheeks, leaving her looking utterly terrified. "What did you see, Elara? Tell me everything. Now!" Elara hesitated, unsettled by her aunt's reaction. She quickly described the ancient forest, the twin moons, and the dragon with human-like gold eyes. Aunt Mira stumbled back a step, gripping the wooden doorframe. "It can't be... The seal is breaking." "Aunt Mira, what are you talking about? What seal?" Elara demanded, throwing off the covers. "You've kept secrets from me my whole life. Who am I?" "Some stories are better left dead, Elara!" Mira snapped, her voice trembling. "If they find out you carry the Moon-Born lineage, they will tear this world apart to possess you!" Before Elara could demand a real answer, a thunderous roar shattered the sky. The roof of the cottage buckled under an invisible, crushing weight. The glass windows imploded inward, showering the room in a storm of crystal shards. High above the storm clouds, three colossal silhouetted dragons circled the village like vultures over a carcass. "They're here," Mira whispered in sheer terror. She grabbed Elara’s arm, dragging her toward the old attic where a hidden chest sat open, glowing with violent purple runes. "You have to run!" "I’m not leaving you!" Elara cried out. "You don't have a choice!" Mira shoved a silver pendant into Elara’s palm. The moment Elara’s skin touched the ancient artifact, the mark on her wrist burst into blinding silver light. The floor beneath her turned to liquid shadow, forming a massive magic circle that hummed with centuries of dormant energy. "Remember who you are, Elara!" Mira screamed as the roof was ripped away by a massive gust of wind, exposing the dark sky. Space tore apart. Elara felt herself pulled downward into a vortex of cold silver flame. *** When Elara’s eyes snapped open, she was no longer in her bedroom. She was lying on a polished black marble courtyard high above the clouds. Around her stood towering silver spires, floating mountain islands, and rivers of liquid starlight cascading into the abyss. Two crimson moons hung in the violet sky above. This was Aetheria—the mythical kingdom her aunt had tried so desperately to hide. "You took your time arriving, little human." A deep, smooth voice purred behind her, laced with dangerous authority. Elara whipped around, scrambling backward on the cold stone. Standing mere feet away was a man clad in intricate obsidian armor etched with glowing silver runes. His dark hair whipped in the icy mountain wind, but it was his eyes that made her breath hitch. Molten gold. Dangerous. Lethal. Beautiful. They were the exact same eyes from her dream. Beside him, a monstrous black dragon lowered its massive head, smoke curling from its fangs as it growled softly in submission to the man. The man took a slow, calculated step toward her, his piercing golden gaze dropping to the silver mark visible on her bare wrist. For a fraction of a second, his cold composure shattered, replaced by pure shock and a dangerous spark of dark possessiveness. "Who... who are you?" Elara choked out, her heart hammering wildly. The man smirked, stepping closer until his shadow completely swallowed her. "I am Kael Draven—the last Dragon Prince of Aetheria," he whispered, leaning down until his lips hovered inches from her ear. "And according to the ancient blood oath... you now belong to me."
