Chapter 10: The Echoes of Memory

2801 Words
The creeping shadows behind Queen Lyria shifted, coiling like living serpents. It was no mere smoke or residual magic. It was alive, pulsating with an ancient, predatory consciousness. Two pale, lidless eyes snapped open in the abyssal mass, followed by the terrifying outline of an colossal entity crawling across the sanctuary walls. Elara’s chest seized; she couldn't draw a breath into her terrified lungs. "What... what is that thing?!" Queen Lyria’s expression transformed instantly from helpless sorrow into razor-sharp determination. "Do not look into its eyes, Elara! Do not listen to its tongue!" The creature slowly tilted its shadow-draped head, its pale eyes fixating on the young woman. When it spoke, the sound was not a terrifying roar, but a soft, velvety murmur that resonated directly behind Elara’s ears—warm, inviting, and horribly familiar: *Elara...* An unexpected, unnatural warmth bloomed inside Elara’s chest, dulling her instincts. Unconsciously, she took a hypnotic step forward toward the dark barrier. Kael’s steel-like grip clamped tightly around her arm, violently yanking her back. "Don't touch it!" "But... it knows my name, Kael," she whispered, her vision slightly hazy. "So does every parasite in this realm that wants to consume you!" Kael spat, his free hand instinctively reaching for his sword hilt. The creature in the shadows let out a low, amused chuckling sound that rattled the silver glass. *He is terrified of me, little Moon-Born...* Kael’s golden eyes flared with liquid dragonfire. "I am afraid of nothing, shadow-spawn." *Then why does your pulse hammer like a trapped bird's when my voice touches your mind?* the entity taunted gently. *You remember the bite of my shadow, Prince of Aetheria.* Kael went entirely still, his muscles locking in place. Elara looked up at his rigid side profile, concern piercing through her fog. "Kael? What is it talking about?" "Ignore it," Kael growled, his knuckles white against his blade. "Do not give it power." The darkness slithered closer against the inner glass, its form expanding. *You have already bound your soul to her, boy. You feel her pain... and you know you cannot save her.* Kael’s jaw clenched so hard his skin turned pale. "What do you want?!" *What I have craved for three thousand suns,* the entity hissed, its pale eyes burning into Elara. *Home.* Queen Lyria stepped directly between the beast and the barrier, her white dress gleaming against the dark corruption. "You will never have her, monster! Not while my soul endures!" The shadow creature chuckled again, a dry, raspy sound. *You made that exact same promise eighteen years ago, little Queen... and look where your promises left you.* Lyria’s face went ghastly pale, her breath catching. Elara stared between her mother and the monster. "You... you know this thing?!" "It was the vanguard that breached the realm gate on the night you were born," Lyria confessed in a trembling voice. "The First Void-Born." The black mass shifted rapidly. A single, razor-sharp claw extended from the smoke—thin, obsidian, and semi-transparent, scraping against the glass with a sound that sent shivers down Elara’s spine. Elara took a step back, her hands trembling. "Why is it hunting me?! What did I ever do?!" "Because the Heartstone’s divine spark lives inside your blood," Lyria answered desperately. The creature’s voice echoed over her, cold and absolute: *Because you are the doorway, child. You are the key to the lock.* A sudden wave of arctic cold rushed through the underground sanctuary, freezing the air. Elara looked down at her right hand. The crescent mark on her wrist was glowing with an intense, frantic silver brilliance. Simultaneously, the dark, corrupt veins on Lyria’s arm began to pulse and spread rapidly toward her neck. "Mom!" Elara cried out, lunging toward the barrier. Lyria gritted her teeth, clenching her fists as she fought the black veins crawling up her skin. "It's... it's using the connection! It's trying to siphon my soul to break the glass!" Kael instantly drew his massive broadsword, the blade igniting with brilliant gold dragonfire. "Tell me how to kill it, Queen Lyria! Command me!" Lyria looked up at the prince, her silver eyes burning with absolute desperation. "Protect Elara." "I will give my life for her!" "No matter what happens... no matter who stands against you!" Kael gave a firm, solemn nod. Queen Lyria closed her eyes tightly, taking a deep, ragged breath. A blinding halo of silver starlight burst forth from her core, enveloping her body in pure lunar radiance. The shadow creature shrieked in agony, a deafening sound that defied human ears. Elara slammed her hands over her ears, but the sound wasn't traveling through the air—it was vibrating violently inside her skull! Suddenly, her vision snapped. Images and memories flashed rapid-fire before her eyes—not her own, but memories that belonged to someone else. She saw her childhood on Earth... her aunt’s quiet house... the small, sleepy village... her mother’s faded portrait. Then, the vision warped into something ancient. Elara found herself standing in a colossal, golden throne room. A younger, unscarred Dragon King was kneeling on one knee before a radiant woman wearing a delicate silver crown—Queen Lyria. They were in the middle of a heated argument. *"You cannot sacrifice our daughter's mortal existence!"* Lyria cried out, holding a bundle tightly against her chest. *"I am not sacrificing her!"* the King thundered back, though his golden eyes held raw grief. *"I am attempting to preserve her life!"* *"You know what the ancient prophecy demands!"* *"The prophecy is a curse, Lyria! It is not her destiny!"* *"You do not understand the dark tide coming for us!"* The young Dragon King stood up, stepping toward the sleeping baby wrapped in white cloth—baby Elara. *"If the Void claims the Heartstone inside her, it will unravel both Aetheria and the mortal realm. We have no choice."* Lyria wept, kissing the baby's forehead. *"Then we hide her. We hide her where magic does not exist."* The Dragon King slowly nodded, placing a massive, armored hand over the baby's small head. *"She will be safe beyond the veil... but one day, the seal will weaken. One day, she will have to return."* *"And when that terrible day comes... who will stand by her?"* Lyria whispered. The King looked down at his daughter, his voice resolute: *"I will burn the heavens to protect her."* The memory violently fractured into another scene! The royal palace was engulfed in dark, unnatural flames. A younger Queen Lyria was running through crumbling marble halls, holding baby Elara. The Dragon King was locked in lethal combat with a towering black beast made of shadows. A young boy with gold eyes—a young Prince Kael—stood frozen near the fallen pillars, crying in terror as dragonfire rained down. Lyria skidded to a halt beside the young prince, placing a hand on his small shoulder. *"Kael! Look at me!"* The young prince looked up, tears streaming down his face. *"If the darkness takes me tonight... promise me you will guard Elara with your soul,"* Lyria pleaded. *"Promise me you will be her shield."* The young prince wiped his face, his small jaw setting with fierce dragon resolve. *"I promise... I promise, My Queen!"* *SWOOSH!* The vision collapsed into white noise. Elara gasped, snapping back into reality, her lungs burning for air. She was back in the vault. Kael was standing right beside her, his breath ragged, his sword trembling slightly in his grip. Elara turned to stare at him, her eyes wide with shock. "You... you remember." Kael looked completely disoriented, his golden eyes wide with shock. "What... what was that?" "You made a promise to my mother," Elara said, her voice shaking. "Eighteen years ago." A storm of profound emotion washed across Kael’s sharp features—confusion, shock, and then a sudden, devastating clarity. His eyes welled with unshed tears. "I... I remember." Elara’s heart did a violent flip. "Everything?" "The fire... the shadows..." Kael whispered, looking toward Queen Lyria behind the glass barrier. "The night you disappeared into the rift... I was there." Lyria offered a heartbreaking, sad smile through the fading silver light. "I knew the ancient spell would eventually break, Kael. The bond you formed with Elara was too strong to be forgotten forever." Kael took a step toward the barrier, his tone laced with anger. "Why were my memories wiped?! Why was I made to forget her?!" "I did not seal your mind, Prince Kael," Lyria revealed softly. Kael’s eyes hardened into icy blades. "Then who did?" Lyria’s gaze shifted toward the shadowed entrance of the vault, where the towering silhouette of the Dragon King stood watching. "Your father." Kael turned slowly, looking at his father with pure, unfiltered betrayal. "My father..." "He sealed your memory of that night because you were ready to leap into the Void rift after baby Elara," Lyria explained gently. "You were just a child, Kael... but you were willing to die to fulfill your promise." "I didn't care that I was a child!" Kael roared toward the doorway. Lyria’s smile was full of warmth despite the darkness surrounding her. "I know. You were the only soul in this kingdom she could truly trust." Elara looked up at Kael, her heart swelling with an emotion so intense it rendered her speechless. "You forgot me... because he forced you to." "I remember now," Kael promised, his golden eyes locking onto hers with unwavering, fierce devotion. "And I am never forgetting again." *ROAR!* A terrifying, violent shockwave shattered the peaceful moment! The ground beneath the garden cracked completely open, and the inner glass barrier splintered into millions of glowing shards! Queen Lyria screamed as the monstrous shadow entity lunged forward, breaching the inner sanctuary! "The seal is destroyed!" Kael didn't hesitate. A deafening roar tore from his throat as dark scales erupted across his skin. Within seconds, he shifted into his colossal black dragon form, filling the underground vault! He opened his massive jaws, releasing a scorching wave of pure gold dragonfire directly into the entity! The roaring flames engulfed the room, but the shadow creature simply absorbed the fire, its pale eyes glowing brighter within the inferno. Elara gasped in horror. "The dragonfire isn't hurting it!" "It will not burn!" Lyria shouted over the chaos. "It is not a creature born of fire or flesh—it is pure void!" Kael lunged, swiping his giant armored claws at the beast, but the shadow entity whipped a massive black tendril across his chest. The violent impact sent Kael’s colossal dragon body crashing into a heavy slate pillar, shattering stone everywhere! "KAEL!" Elara screamed, sprinting toward his fallen form. Kael struggled to rise, smoke rising from his wounded scales. *Stay back, Elara! Get behind me!* "I'm not leaving you!" she cried, reaching his side. *You must!* The giant shadow entity slithered past the fallen pillars, gliding directly toward Elara with lethal speed. Lyria’s frantic voice echoed from the crumbling garden: "Elara! Use the crescent mark on your wrist!" Elara held up her glowing arm, panic seizing her chest. "How?! What do I do?!" "Do not fight the magic with fear!" Lyria instructed desperately. "The Void feeds on terror!" Elara’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. "How am I supposed to stop being afraid when a monster is trying to kill us?!" "You don't stop being afraid, my child," Lyria said softly, her voice carrying a maternal warmth. "You accept the fear... and choose love instead!" The icy shadows enveloped Elara’s body. A arctic cold seized her limbs, and thousands of dark, weeping voices filled her head. Terrifying visions flashed before her eyes: Kael’s lifeless body... her mother fading into ash... her aunt crying in an empty house... Aetheria burning to the ground... Earth being swallowed by shadow. Elara trembled, but instead of fighting the terrifying visions, she took a deep breath. She closed her eyes and let the cold wash over her. She stopped running. For one terrifying second, absolute silence fell over her mind. Then, a soft, warm whisper broke through the dark: *You are not the darkness, my little moon...* A second voice followed, deep, fierce, and unbreakable: *You are not alone, Elara. I am here.* Elara’s eyes snapped open! *BOOM!* A blinding explosion of celestial silver light erupted outward from her chest, illuminating the entire subterranean cavern! The monstrous shadow entity let out an agonizing shriek as the divine starlight seared its form, blasting the giant beast backward into the far wall! Kael watched in absolute awe. Elara’s long hair floated in the sudden, magical aura surrounding her. Her brown eyes had transformed into brilliant pools of liquid silver, and the crescent mark on her wrist had extended into an intricate, glowing tattoo spanning her entire forearm! Lyria wept tears of relief. "The true Moon-Born power... she has fully awakened." The subterranean chamber shook violently. The shadow entity pulled itself out of the cracked wall, its pale eyes narrowing. It did not charge again. Instead, a chilling, terrifying smile opened across its dark face. *Fascinating...* the creature whispered, its voice echoing in the stone. *Now I see the true extent of what you carry...* Elara stepped forward, her voice ringing with newfound, divine authority. "What are you?!" *I am the First Shadow,* the entity hissed gently. *The primordial void.* "What do you want from us?!" *Freedom from this cage,* the beast answered smoothly. "Why hunt me?!" The creature’s smile widened, revealing row upon row of razor-sharp shadow teeth. *Because your mortal heart contains the key to the final gate.* The silver radiance around Elara flickered slightly as confusion hit her. She looked back at her mother. "What key is it talking about?!" Lyria’s face was filled with utter terror. "The true Heart Gate..." Kael shifted back into his human form, staggering to Elara’s side. "The gate beneath the palace?" "No..." Lyria shook her head, tears falling fast. "The gate beneath Aetheria is merely an anchor. The true, primary Heart Gate is not in this realm at all." Kael froze. "Then where is it?!" Lyria looked directly into Elara’s eyes, her voice trembling with devastating news: "It is hidden in the mortal realm. On Earth." Elara’s blood ran ice-cold. "What...?" "The primary gate that seals the Void was never destroyed eighteen years ago," Lyria revealed. "It was hidden in the mortal world to keep it safe." "Where on Earth?!" Elara demanded, her voice cracking. "In the quiet sanctuary where you were raised..." Lyria whispered. Elara felt as if the ground had vanished beneath her feet. "Evermere...? My village?" Lyria nodded slowly. "The Heart Gate lies directly beneath the roots of your childhood home." Kael’s eyes widened in horror. "That means the Void’s vanguard has been gathering near her human home all along..." Elara thought of her quiet, peaceful life on Earth—her small bedroom, the green hills, her cozy house, and her aunt, Aunt Clara, who had raised her with unconditional love. "My aunt..." Elara gasped, terror gripping her chest. "Aunt Clara is there alone!" Lyria’s expression broke completely. "Yes..." Elara whirled around toward the exit corridor. "We have to go back right now! We have to cross the rift!" Kael grabbed her hand, his expression resolute. "I am coming with you." "You cannot cross," a deep, grim voice interrupted from the vault entrance. The Dragon King stepped out of the shadows. His dark armor was battered, his face etched with grim exhaustion. Elara glared at him. "Why can't we go back?!" "Because the invasion has already begun on the other side," the King revealed solemnly. Elara’s breath hitched. "What did you say?" The Dragon King looked toward the shadow entity receding into the cracks. "The Void did not just breach Aetheria tonight. Its scouts crossed through the mortal gate before you ever stepped into this realm." Elara’s heart stopped beating. "Aunt Clara..." The Dragon King met her eyes, his tone dropping into a heavy, respectful quiet. "Your aunt was never merely a human guardian protecting a child from Aetheria, Elara." He took a step closer, revealing the truth at last: "She is an ancient Sentinel. She has been guarding the mortal gate from the Void for eighteen years." *ROAR!* A deafening, realm-shattering roar echoed from the sky high above the palace! The subterranean foundation groaned as shockwaves rippled through the bedrock. The Dragon King turned his head toward the surface sound, his jaw set. Up above, every dragon in Aetheria screamed in unison as a massive, sky-spanning black tear ripped through the clouds. Queen Lyria whispered in horror: "The veil has shattered..." Elara looked at Kael, her heart hammering wildly. "What is happening?!" Kael looked up toward the crumbling ceiling, his golden eyes blazing with fatal determination: "The Second Dragon War has begun."
