Chapter 4: The Dragon Heart Bond

2023 Words
The words reverberated through the decaying, cavernous temple like a death knell, shaking loose cascades of ancient dust from the stone pillars. *The power that slew the last Dragon King.* Elara stared open-mouthed at the massive white dragon, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. She took a step forward, her voice trembling yet sharp with desperation. "What power? What are you talking about?!" The ancient leviathan did not answer immediately. With a fierce hiss of displaced energy, Kael transformed back into his human form. His dark leather tunic was torn at the shoulders, revealing smooth, muscle-bound skin laced with glowing silver scars. His molten-gold eyes burned with intense, dangerous curiosity as he stepped into Elara’s line of sight, his body positioned as an impenetrable shield. "Speak, ancient one," Kael demanded, his low voice carrying a deadly, aristocratic edge. "My father sits upon the throne of Aetheria as the supreme Dragon King. Who was the king that fell?" The white dragon lowered its colossal head until its snout rested mere inches from the stone floor. *Your father wears a crown forged of stolen blood, Prince Kael. The lineage he destroyed was not merely a threat... it was the true foundation of this realm.* Commander Seraphine's eyes flared with crimson rage. "Enough of these treasonous lies!" With a deafening roar, Seraphine lunged forward, her broadsword flashing through the air in a lethal arc aimed directly at the ancient beast's throat. Kael moved with terrifying, inhuman speed. He drew his obsidian blade, intercepting her strike mid-air. *CLANG!* Sparks erupted into the dim light as steel slammed against steel, the shockwave rattling the heavy stone archways. "Commander," Kael purred coldly, his blade locked firmly against hers, his golden eyes narrowing into lethal slits. "Stand down before I sever your head from your shoulders." "You've lost your mind, Prince Kael!" Seraphine hissed, her muscles straining against his overwhelming strength. She flicked her gaze past his shoulder toward Elara. "That girl is an unholy blight! If the King discovers you harbored the Moon-Born half-breed, he will execute every guard in your court!" "I know exactly what I am doing," Kael growled, applying pressure until Seraphine was forced back three paces. Seraphine’s eyes burned with cold hatred as she glared at Elara. "She is dangerous. She carries the curse of the stars!" "She hasn't harmed a single soul," Kael countered, his voice dropping into a protective, dangerous register that made Elara's breath hitch. "Not yet!" "Stop talking about me as if I'm a ghost haunting a room!" Elara’s voice shattered the argument, ringing clear and defiant through the temple. Both warriors froze, turning their heads toward her in surprise. Elara stood her ground, her chin lifted high despite the absolute terror clawing at her throat. "I am sick of secrets!" Elara shouted, pointing a finger directly at Kael. "You know who my parents were! You knew my father saved your life!" She whirled toward Seraphine. "You know why your tyrant of a king wants me executed!" Finally, she faced the massive white dragon. "And you know what kind of dark magic is burning inside my veins! So for once in eighteen years, someone in this realm needs to tell me the goddamn truth!" A suffocating silence descended upon the sacred hall. Kael slowly lowered his sword, his expression softening as he stared at her fierce, tear-stained face. Seraphine looked distinctly unsettled, her grip on her broadsword loosening as she hesitated. The white dragon folded its massive, alabaster wings against its body. *Then you must hear the tragedy that was erased from the scrolls of history...* The celestial runes carved into the temple floor flared with blinding radiance. A brilliant circle of liquid starlight erupted directly beneath Elara's feet. Panicking, she stumbled backward. "What is happening?!" Kael instinctively reached out to catch her. The instant his bare fingers grazed her skin, a jolt of incandescent, golden light exploded around them. Both of them froze. A wave of searing, intoxicating warmth surged from Kael’s fingertips straight into Elara’s bloodstream. It felt like liquid fire melting into winter ice—a deep, visceral connection that made both of their breaths hitch simultaneously. Elara looked up into his eyes, gasping as she felt a sudden, heavy throbbing behind her ribs. It wasn't just her own heartbeat—she could hear *his* heart hammering in perfect sync with hers. Kael yanked his hand back as if burned, his chest heaving, his golden eyes wide with dark, unreadable shock. "What... what was that?" Elara whispered, clutching her chest. "I... I don't know," Kael breathed, looking down at his hand as if it belonged to a stranger. *The sacred bond has initiated,* the white dragon rumbled softly. Seraphine gasped, taking a horrified step back. "By the Ancestors... That is impossible!" Kael’s head snapped toward the ancient beast, his jaw clenched so hard his facial bones stood out in sharp relief. "What bond?!" *The Dragon Heart Bond,* the ancient dragon revealed solemnely. *The eternal tether between the King of Shadows and the Sovereign of the Stars.* "Explain it to me!" Elara demanded, looking between Kael’s pale face and the ancient creature. "Kael, what is a Dragon Heart Bond?!" Kael swallowed hard, refusing to meet her eyes for a long moment. "It is an ancient, soul-binding magic," he explained, his voice strained and quiet. "It ties a dragon prince to his chosen Moon-Born. It allows them to share raw magic, deep memories... and every emotion passing through their hearts." Elara’s breath caught. "So... we are bonded?" Kael looked down at the crescent mark on her wrist, which was now glowing in tandem with a faint, dark mark pulsing beneath his own shirt collar. "Not fully. The mark has only opened the first gate. It means the bond is weaving itself into our souls." Elara felt an undeniable, intoxicating warmth blooming in her chest. She looked at Kael—and felt his sudden surge of intense possessiveness, dark fear, and overwhelming attraction toward her. It was terrifying... yet somehow deeply comforting. "You... you can feel what I'm feeling right now?" she whispered softly. Kael’s eyes locked onto hers, burning with an intense, guarded flame. "Every single heartbeat, Elara." *The bond is no accident of fate,* the white dragon spoke again, drawing their attention back. *It was orchestrated before you were born. Your mother chose him.* Kael looked utterly shaken. "Lady Selene chose me? Why?!" *Because she foresaw the darkness falling over Aetheria,* the dragon rumbled. *She knew that when the kingdom crumbled, it would require the Prince of Shadows to shield her daughter.* "Why would my mother trust the son of her worst enemy?!" Elara pressed, stepping closer to the beast. "Why would she trust the Dragon King?!" The white dragon’s eyes filled with deep, ancient sorrow. *Because before he became a tyrant, the Dragon King loved your mother.* Elara felt as though the floor had dissolved beneath her feet. "What?!" Kael looked away, his expression turning dark and tormented. "My father loved Selene before he wore the crown. And your father... was his greatest general." Elara’s head spun as the tangled web of her family’s past unraveled. Her parents, the Dragon King, and Kael were all bound together by love, betrayal, and blood. "Then why did my parents die?! Why did your father hunt them?!" Kael stared down at the cold stone floor, his voice barely audible. "I... I don't know." *You do know, Prince Kael,* the ancient dragon rumbled softly. *You were there the night the Moon-Born sanctuary burned.* Elara whirled toward Kael, her heart dropping into a pit of ice. "You were there?!" "I don't remember!" Kael snapped defensively, his voice cracking with raw pain. "My father sealed my childhood memories with blood magic when I was seven! I only see nightmares of fire and screaming!" *BOOM!* A violent explosion rocked the temple exterior. Cracks spider-webbed across the ceiling as the outer walls began to crumble under heavy siege weapons. Seraphine rushed toward the broken entryway, checking the skies. "The King's main army has reached the valley! We have minutes before this place is buried!" Kael grabbed Elara’s hand, his grip tight and protective. "We need to leave now." Elara looked back at the white dragon. "What about you?" *I am bound to the stone of this sanctuary,* the beast replied gently. *My duty ends here. But your journey lies in the north.* The ancient dragon blew a breath of glowing mist into the air, projecting an ethereal map of Aetheria. The map zoomed past floating islands and crystal lakes, settling on a terrifying, jagged mountain range shrouded in red thunderbolts. "The Ashen Mountains..." Kael muttered darkly. Seraphine gasped. "No one survives the Ashen Valley! That is where the First Dragon War devastated the realm!" *It is where your mother hid the final relic of her power,* the ancient dragon told Elara. *The truth of your birth and the key to dethroning the tyrant lies within the dragon vault.* "Then that is where we are going," Elara stated firmly, her voice leaving no room for argument. "No!" Kael interjected instantly. "It is suicide, Elara! The magic in those mountains mutates dragon blood!" "I don't care!" Elara shouted, stepping right into his space, her eyes blazing with fierce determination. "My entire life has been a lie! My aunt hid me, my parents were murdered, a mad king wants my head on a spike, and now I'm soul-bonded to a dragon prince! I deserve the truth, Kael, and I am going to get it!" Kael stared at her breathless, defiant face. A faint, reluctant smirk touched his lips despite the dire situation. "You are infuriatingly stubborn." "So I've been told," she countered, her pulse racing through their shared bond. Seraphine slowly sheathed her sword. "If you go to the Ashen Mountains, the King will bring his entire fleet." Kael narrowed his eyes at her. "Are you warning us... or threatening us, Commander?" Seraphine looked at Elara with a conflicted expression. "I know what the King has become... a monster consumed by dark magic." She lowered her voice, looking directly into Elara's eyes. "Eighteen years ago, I stood outside your mother's burning sanctuary as she died." Elara froze, her breath catching. "You... you were there?" Seraphine nodded slowly. "She gave me one final message before the fire took her. She said: *When my daughter returns, tell her to trust the dragon who fears his own heart.*" Elara slowly turned to look at Kael. Through their shared bond, she felt a sudden surge of profound, raw emotion erupt from his chest—a mixture of shock, reverence, and an overwhelming desire to protect her with his life. *ROAR!* A deafening, terrifying roar shattered the sky above. A massive black shadow swallowed the temple as a colossal, crimson-and-gold dragon descended from the storm clouds. Standing atop its crown was a tall man wearing a jagged golden crown, his eyes burning with absolute, lethal fury. "The King..." Seraphine whispered in sheer terror. "He knows you are alive!" *Go! Now!* the white dragon boomed, slamming its tail against the altar. A swirling portal of dark silver fire tore open behind the altar, revealing a desolate, ash-covered forest beneath a crimson sky. Kael tightly intertwined his fingers with Elara’s, pulling her toward the portal. "Hold on to me and don't let go!" Elara looked up at their joined hands, feeling his heart pounding against hers. "Are you afraid, Kael?" He glanced down at her, his golden eyes raw with emotion. "I am terrified... of losing you." Before she could speak, Kael pulled her into his arms, and together they leaped into the roaring portal. High above the collapsing temple, the Dragon King stepped onto the stone ruins, his dark cloak billowing in the ash-filled wind. He stared down at the closing portal, his fists clenched so hard his claws drew blood. Beneath his murderous rage, a single tear escaped his eye as he whispered a forgotten name: *"Lyria..."* He looked toward the Ashen Mountains, his voice echoing like dark thunder: "Your daughter has returned... and I will finish what we started eighteen years ago."
