Chapter 2: The Forbidden Truth

950 Words
Elara stood frozen on the black marble plaza. Behind the sharp, dangerously handsome man stood a colossal black dragon, its obsidian wings tightly folded against its massive frame. Every low, rumbling breath it drew vibrated through the very stone beneath her bare feet. She locked her gaze onto Kael's molten-gold eyes, struggling to find her voice. "You said I wasn't supposed to find you." "You weren't," Kael replied smoothly, taking a slow, predatory step forward. "Then open whatever gate brought me here and send me back!" Elara demanded, fear rapidly giving way to hot, defiant anger. "I can't," he answered without a second's hesitation. "What do you mean, you can't?!" Kael closed the remaining distance between them, his towering presence engulfing her completely. The scent of ozone, winter rain, and ancient embers radiated off him. "The portal brought you here, but it collapsed the moment you crossed over. It hasn't opened in nearly eighteen years—not since the last Moon-Born vanished from Aetheria." Elara’s anger faltered, a cold dread pooling in her stomach. "Eighteen years? What even is a Moon-Born?" Instead of answering, Kael’s piercing gaze dropped to the glowing crescent mark on her wrist. Elara instinctively clamped her hand over it, backing away. "I don't even know what this means!" "I know you don't," Kael said, his voice dropping into a low, hypnotic hum. "Which makes you infinitely more dangerous." Before Elara could push for answers, a sharp, metallic horn echoed across the glowing sky, shattering the quiet gloom. The black dragon behind Kael raised its massive head, letting out a dangerous hiss. A second horn blasted from the east, followed by a third. Kael’s jaw tightened, his calm facade instantly evaporating. He lunged forward, grabbing Elara by the wrist. "Let go of me!" Elara snapped, trying to wrench herself free from his iron grip. "I don't trust you!" "You shouldn't," Kael growled, pulling her close until her chest pressed against his armored torso. "But right now, your trust is a luxury we don't have. Look up." Glancing at the sky between the twin crimson moons, Elara gasped. A fleet of majestic silver-and-crimson dragons glided through the clouds, their glowing riders brandishing gleam-honed weapons. "Royal Guards," Kael muttered darkly. "They felt the portal rupture. Humans are strictly forbidden in Aetheria—and they are coming to execute you." "Why?!" Elara choked out, her breath hitching. "What did humans ever do to your kingdom?" "The last human who stepped foot in Aetheria nearly reduced our empire to ash," Kael hissed, his golden eyes burning with dark memories. "And the guards won't wait to ask whether you're here to save us... or finish what the last one started." A violent gust of wind swept across the ridge as four dragons plummeted from the sky, transforming into heavily armored warriors before hitting the ground. A striking woman with fiery red hair stepped forward, unsheathing a glowing broadsword. "Prince Kael!" Commander Seraphine called out, her eyes falling upon Elara. The moment she caught sight of the glowing mark on Elara’s wrist, the commander went deathly pale. "By the Ancestors... The Moon-Born has returned!" Seraphine raised her blade high. "Seize the girl before the King learns of her existence!" "Touch her, and I'll tear your soul from your flesh," Kael warned, his voice laced with pure, lethal authority as he stepped directly in front of Elara. "You would defy your own father, the Dragon King?!" Seraphine shouted in disbelief. "If he tries to take what belongs to the realm’s destiny—yes," Kael growled. Suddenly, a deafening crack of thunder tore through the sky. The golden clouds surrounding the towering royal castle melted into pitch-black smoke. A roar so terrifying vibrated through the earth that even Seraphine’s guards dropped to one knee in absolute submission. Kael’s face hardened into stone. "The Dragon King has awakened. We are out of time." Before Elara could comprehend his words, Kael’s form exploded into a tempest of black smoke and silver fire. In his place stood the giant obsidian dragon from her dreams. *Climb on,* his deep, velvety voice echoed directly inside Elara's mind. "I've never ridden a dragon!" Elara cried out over the howling wind. *You have now. Do not make me ask twice, little human.* Driven by sheer survival, Elara scrambled onto his broad, scaled back. The moment her palms touched his scales, a jolt of raw electrical magic surged through both of them. Kael let out a fierce, powerful roar, unfurling his massive wings and launching them straight into the stormy sky. The breathtaking world of Aetheria expanded beneath them—floating mountain islands, glowing rivers of starlight, and thousands of distant dragons flying beneath the twin moons. But Kael didn't head toward the royal city. He banked hard north, plunging straight toward a terrifying abyss shrouded in lightning. "Where are you taking me?!" Elara shouted over the wind. *To the Forbidden Forest,* Kael’s voice purred in her head. *Where the truth of your bloodline is buried.* Elara’s heart plummeted into her throat as she stared down at the dark, claw-like trees below. "I... I've seen this place before. I dreamed of this exact forest!" Kael’s flight faltered for a split second, a heavy silence falling over their telepathic bond. *You didn't dream about it, Elara,* Kael spoke softly, his tone heavy with an unreadable emotion. *You remembered it.* Before Elara could process his shock, the mountain beneath the forest shuddered. Two colossal, glowing golden eyes opened deep within the abyss, radiating an ancient power that forced every beast in the sky to scatter in terror. *The First Dragon has awakened...* Kael whispered in her mind as they plummeted directly into the dark canopy.
