Elara froze in the center of the dark cottage foyer, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
The woman standing at the top of the creaking wooden stairs looked uncannily like Aunt Mira. She possessed the exact same silver-streaked brown hair pinned up in a loose bun, the same tired, gentle eyes framed by soft crow's feet, and the faded blue linen dress she had worn almost every single day in Evermere.
Yet, those eyes were completely wrong.
There were no warm pupils or gentle irises—only two hollow, endless pits of jet-black darkness staring back down at her.
Kael stepped instantly in front of Elara, his broadsword igniting with low, protective dragonfire. His free hand reached back, clamping tightly around Elara’s trembling fingers. "Don't move a single muscle, Elara," he warned in a low, dangerous whisper.
The woman at the top of the landing offered a sweet, motherly smile, tilting her head. "Elara, my darling girl... why are you cowering behind a monster? Why are you afraid of your own family?"
Elara’s breath hitched, tears blurring her vision. "Where... where is my real aunt?! What did you do to her?!"
The creature’s smile widened, stretching slightly too wide across its face to be human. "I am your aunt, child. I am the woman who wiped your tears and tucked you into bed every night."
"No!" Elara shook her head violently, taking a sharp step backward. "You're not her!"
The entity tilted its head with a sickening, liquid sound. "You know me in your soul, Elara. Why deny your own blood?"
"You look like her," Elara choked out, her voice rising in desperation. "But you are NOT her!"
"I am her memory, her flesh, and her bone," the entity insisted softly.
"NO!" Elara’s voice echoed loudly through the abandoned, shadowy cottage. "You don't sound like her! You don't carry her warmth!"
The creature’s polite expression vanished in a flash of terrifying malice.
For a horrifying second, Aunt Mira’s face dissolved entirely. The skin turned ash-gray, cracking open like dry mud to reveal a swirling vortex of black smoke beneath. Sickening black veins crawled rapidly across its neck and cheeks.
Then, with a subtle shift of shadow, the illusion snapped back into place, assuming Aunt Mira’s gentle appearance once more.
"You always were a remarkably clever child," the creature purred, its voice carrying an unnatural, multi-layered echo.
Kael raised his glowing blade, pointing it directly at the entity's chest. "What did you do with the real woman who lived in this house? Speak, or I will burn this hallway to ash!"
The creature let out a soft, mocking laugh that sent arctic chills down Elara’s spine. "She is sleeping, sweet prince."
"Where?!" Kael demanded, his golden eyes flaring with lethal dragonfire.
"In a dark, forgotten cage where your mortal blades cannot reach."
Elara stepped out from behind Kael’s shoulder, her chest heaving with raw emotion. "Let her go! Take me instead, but let her go!"
The creature’s jet-black eyes fixed on Elara. "And why should I release my most valuable tether?"
"Because she protected me!" Elara wept, her knuckles white as she squeezed Kael’s hand. "She gave her entire life to keep me safe!"
"Yes..." The creature’s tone dropped into a terrifyingly soft, intimate whisper. "She protected you very well indeed. She hid the living Heartstone right beneath our noses for eighteen long years."
Kael’s jaw set into an unyielding line, his stance broadening. "What do you truly want here, Void-Born?"
The pale eyes locked onto Elara’s glowing arm. "Her."
Kael shifted his weight, completely blocking Elara from the creature’s line of sight. "Not going to happen."
The creature smiled serenely from the top stair. "You cannot shield her forever, Prince of Aetheria. You are a creature of flesh and bone. Eventually, you will bleed. Eventually, you will fall."
Kael’s golden eyes flashed with an ancient, dangerous fury. "I don't need to protect her forever, shadow-spawn. I only need to protect her long enough."
"Long enough for what?" the creature taunted softly.
"For her to discover the true extent of who she really is," Kael growled.
The creature’s mocking smile vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, hateful glare. "You sound remarkably like Lyria..."
Elara’s heart stopped dead in her chest. The air left her lungs in a sharp gasp. "You... you knew my mother?"
"I knew Queen Lyria very well," the entity hissed, taking a slow, silent step down the wooden stairs. "I was there when her crown shattered."
"What did you do to her?!" Elara demanded, tears spilling down her cheeks. "Did you kill her?!"
"I did nothing to her, child," the creature answered smoothly. "Her fate was entirely of her own making."
"You're lying!"
The creature descended another step, its movements fluid and unnatural. "Your mother made a grand, desperate bargain with the dark, Elara. She offered her own divine soul to the Void in exchange for your fragile mortal life."
Kael’s expression hardened with skepticism. "That isn't possible. The Void does not honor bargains."
The creature laughed—a sound like grinding stone. "Ask your precious father, Prince Kael! Ask the Dragon King what he sacrificed to keep his crown!"
Elara felt as if the room were spinning out of control. "My... my father knew about this?"
"He knew every horrific detail," the entity purred. "He watched her surrender her spirit to save a sniveling human infant."
Kael had heard enough. "Enough of your poison!"
With a deafening roar, Kael lunged forward, swinging his massive, fire-infused broadsword across the staircase!
*SWOOSH!*
The glowing blade cut cleanly through the creature’s torso—but there was no resistance. No blood spilled, no bone broke. The physical form of Aunt Mira simply dissolved into a thick cloud of oily black smoke.
Kael landed hard on the wooden stairs, spinning around instantly with his sword raised. "Where did it go?!"
A cold, breathy whisper echoed directly against the back of Elara’s neck:
*Right behind you, sweet Moon-Born...*
Elara whirled around in terror.
The creature was standing inches away from her face, its hollow black eyes staring directly into her soul. Before Elara could scream or draw upon her silver fire, the creature extended a long, shadowy finger and touched her forehead.
*BUZZ!*
Elara’s body went completely rigid. Her senses were violently ripped from the physical room.
The cottage, Kael, and the real world vanished instantly.
When Elara opened her eyes, she was no longer in the dark cottage. She was standing in a sunlit, blooming meadow beneath a brilliant silver moon.
A joyful laugh echoed through the tall grass. Elara turned and saw a little girl with messy brown hair sprinting through the flowers.
It was her. Five years old.
Aunt Mira stood nearby, wearing a bright yellow sundress, holding a woven picnic basket and laughing with pure, radiant warmth.
Elara watched her younger self trip and fall into the grass, and Aunt Mira instantly rushed over, picking the little girl up and kissing her scraped knee. "I'm here, my sweet Elara. I've got you."
The memory felt intensely real—the smell of sweet clover, the warm breeze, the unconditional love in Mira’s eyes.
*SWOOSH!*
The scene shifted violently.
Now Elara was twelve years old, sitting at the wooden kitchen table by candlelight. Aunt Mira was sitting beside her, patiently guiding her small hand as she learned to write complex sentences in a leather journal.
Another shift. Fifteen years old. Elara was sobbing on her bed after her first devastating heartbreak, and Aunt Mira was wrapping a warm blanket around her shoulders, gently stroking her hair until she fell asleep.
Another shift. Eighteen years old. The night before Elara’s life changed forever. Aunt Mira was brushing Elara’s long hair before bed, her eyes filled with a strange, tragic sorrow that Elara hadn't understood back then.
Tears streamed down Elara’s face in the mental realm. "These... these are my memories. My real life."
The shadow entity materialized out of the tall grass beside her. "Yes. Pure, uncorrupted memories of love."
"You can't fake these feelings!" Elara wept, clutching her chest. "She loved me!"
"I don't need to fake them, child," the creature replied gently.
"Then where is she?!" Elara screamed into the meadow sky. "Where are you keeping her?!"
The creature smiled a cold, haunting smile. "She is right here."
A massive, iron-reinforced black door materialized out of thin air in the middle of the meadow.
Driven by pure instinct, Elara sprinted forward and threw the iron door open.
Inside lay a dark, freezing stone cell. Sitting on the cold floor, bound by thick chains of pulsating black magic, was the real Aunt Mira. She looked frail, exhausted, and pale, but her eyes—her real, warm, brown eyes—were open.
"Elara?!" Mira gasped, her voice raspy.
Elara’s heart shattered. She lunged into the cell toward her. "Aunt Mira! I found you!"
"Elara, no! Stop!" Mira cried out, struggling against the heavy chains. "Don't come closer! It's a trap!"
Elara froze a few feet away, her hands trembling. "I'm going to get you out of here!"
The shadow entity glided into the cell behind Elara, looking down at the chained woman. "Look how fiercely she still tries to protect you, little Queen."
Mira glared up at the monster with fierce, maternal fury. "Leave her alone, you parasite! Take me, but let her live!"
The creature chuckled softly. "You still act like her mother."
"I AM her mother!" Mira shouted, her voice echoing in the dark space.
Elara stopped breathing, her mind stalling completely. "What... what did you just say?"
Mira looked up at Elara, tears spilling over her tired cheeks. "Elara... my sweet girl... I wanted to tell you. I was going to tell you when you turned eighteen..."
"Tell me what?!" Elara begged, her voice cracking.
Mira’s shoulders shook with heavy sobs. "You... you were never my niece, Elara. I called you my niece to protect you from the royal drakes... but you were my daughter."
Complete, agonizing silence descended over the mental realm.
Elara stared at the woman who had raised her, her world shattering for the hundredth time. "My... my mother...?"
"Queen Lyria was your birth mother," Mira clarified hastily, nodding through her tears. "And your birth father was the human warrior who gave his life defending the realm gate. But when Lyria was taken by the Void..."
"She gave you to her sister," Elara whispered, the realization hitting her like a physical blow. "You're my aunt... my mother's blood sister."
"Yes," Mira wept. "I carried you across the rift. I raised you as my own. I loved you as my own daughter!"
"Then why did you lie to me my whole life?!" Elara cried, her chest aching with unbearable pain. "Why keep the truth from me?!"
"Because your mother begged me to hide you!" Mira pleaded. "She knew that if the Dragon King or the Void found out you were the living Heartstone, they would hunt you to the ends of the earth!"
The shadow creature let out a dark, delighted laugh. "She lied because she was terrified, Elara. And she didn't tell you the most devastating part of the vision."
Elara slowly turned her head toward the monster. "What vision?"
"Before Queen Lyria surrendered her soul," the creature purred, stepping closer, "she saw the future. She saw the exact moment you would return to Aetheria... and she saw Prince Kael."
"Kael...?" Elara whispered.
"She saw you fall hopelessly in love with the son of the man who destroyed her," the creature hissed, extending a cold, black shadow hand toward Elara’s heart. "She saw your soul bind to his... creating the ultimate catalyst for our rise!"
*“ELARA!”*
A thunderous, golden voice echoed from beyond the mental illusion!
The entire meadow illusion cracked like shattered glass!
A wave of arctic cold stabbed directly into Elara’s chest, making her scream in pure agony. The crescent mark on her wrist flared with blinding, white-hot celestial fire!
Suddenly, a pair of strong, armored arms wrapped securely around her waist, ripping her out of the mental dark!
*BOOM!*
The vision shattered completely!
Elara tumbled hard onto the cold wooden floor of the cottage living room, collapsing directly against Kael’s chest. He held her tightly, his arms wrapped around her like steel bands, his golden eyes burning with divine dragonfire.
"Elara! Look at me!" Kael demanded, his voice laced with desperate worry. "Breathe! Stay with me!"
Elara gasped violently for air, clutching Kael’s leather armor as tears flooded her eyes. "I... I can't... I can't breathe, Kael..."
"Yes, you can," Kael promised fiercely, pressing his forehead against hers, his warm aura washing over her freezing skin. "Focus on my voice. I'm right here. I'm not letting them take you."
The shadow entity floated near the shattered front door, its pale eyes narrowing as it watched the two of them. "You see how fragile your bond is, Prince? Love will be your undoing."
Kael turned his head slowly toward the monster, his golden eyes glowing with lethal, unyielding promise. "You're afraid, shadow-spawn."
The creature let out a dry, mocking chuckle. "Afraid of a broken dragon prince?"
"No," Kael growled, his grip tightening around Elara as her silver magic slowly stabilized his own strength. "You are afraid of what happens when she fully accepts my soul... and chooses to destroy you."
The creature’s polite facade dropped entirely, its dark face twisting in pure rage. "Love is weakness!"
"Not when it gives us something worth dying for!" Kael roared!
*BOOM!*
A colossal shockwave of brilliant silver starlight exploded outward from Elara’s body!
The divine magic blasted through the entire cottage, shattering the remaining windows and obliterating the shadow creature into harmless ash!
The mental illusion collapsed completely.
Elara slumped exhausted against Kael’s chest, her heavy breathing filling the quiet room.
The fake Aunt Mira was gone. The creature had fled back into the shadows.
For several seconds, neither of them moved. The only sound was the heavy beating of their hearts.
Kael looked down at her, his voice dropping into a quiet, solemn whisper. "She... she was telling the truth, wasn't she?"
Elara looked up into his golden eyes, her voice trembling. "Aunt Mira... she's my mother's sister. My real blood aunt."
"Yes," Kael murmured softly.
"And my birth mother... she really surrendered herself to the Void to save my life."
"Yes."
Elara stared up at him, a sudden, cold realization settling in her gut. "And you knew about the ancient prophecy all along, didn't you?"
Kael hesitated, his golden eyes flickering with guilt. "I knew fragments of it... I knew the Heartstone would awaken in a Moon-Born child."
Elara’s gaze hardened, her tone dropping. "What else aren't you telling me, Kael?"
Kael looked away toward the broken front door, unable to meet her eyes. "I didn't know about your aunt... I swear it."
"But you knew my mother might still be alive trapped in the sanctuary!" Elara pressed, pushing herself slightly back from his chest. "You knew before we even left the palace!"
Kael remained silent, his jaw clenching.
"You knew," Elara whispered, hurt piercing her heart. "You should have told me the truth!"
"I was afraid, Elara!" Kael blurted out, turning back to face her, his golden eyes raw with emotion.
"Afraid of what?!"
"Of losing you!" Kael confessed, his voice cracking with rare vulnerability. "I was terrified that if you knew the whole truth, you would choose to sacrifice yourself to save her... and I couldn't bear the thought of living in a world without you!"
Elara’s anger faltered, the sheer intensity of his confession locking her breath in her throat.
Before she could speak, a low, unnatural growl echoed from outside the cottage.
Kael instantly stood up, pulling Elara behind him as he peered out the shattered front window.
The quiet dirt streets of Evermere were no longer empty.
Hundreds upon hundreds of towering, shadowy Void creatures were crawling out of the burning treeline, their pale crimson eyes illuminating the dark village. They were surrounding the cottage from every angle.
Elara gasped, looking out the window. "What... what are those things?!"
"The Void’s main army," Kael said grimly. "They've completely crossed the threshold."
*GWAAAAAAH!*
A sharp, metallic war horn echoed from the high clouds above the village!
Kael’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief. "That horn..."
"What is it?!" Elara asked.
"That's the royal rally horn of Aetheria!"
A massive, majestic silver dragon burst through the pitch-black clouds above the village, its scaled wings cutting through the dark smoke! The silver drake landed heavily in the center of the village square, crushing several shadow creatures beneath its giant claws.
A figure jumped down from the dragon's back—a fierce female warrior clad in gleaming silver plate armor, holding two glowing broadswords.
Seraphine.
Seraphine whirled around, slicing through three shadow beasts, before her eyes locked onto the cottage. "KAEL! ELARA!"
Kael threw open the cottage door as Seraphine sprinted inside, slicing a shadow tendril in half before slamming the heavy oak door shut behind her.
"Seraphine?!" Kael gasped. "How did you cross the rift? Where is the royal vanguard?!"
Seraphine was breathing heavily, her silver armor covered in black Void blood. She looked directly at Elara, her face pale with grave news. "We have to fall back to the royal capital immediately!"
"Why?!" Elara asked. "What happened in Aetheria?!"
Seraphine looked between them, her voice trembling with shock. "Because the Dragon King has been captured."
Elara’s heart stopped dead. Kael froze as if struck by lightning. "My father...? Captured?!"
"By whom?!" Kael demanded, grabbing Seraphine’s shoulder armor.
Seraphine pointed her blade up toward the black sky. "By the Void Lord himself."
*BOOM!*
A colossal, sky-spanning shadow shifted across the dark clouds above Evermere. Two giant, blood-red eyes opened in the heavens, casting a crimson glare over the entire village.
Then, a thunderous, multi-layered voice boomed from the sky, shaking the foundation of every house in Evermere:
**BRING ME THE MOON-BORN... AND I WILL RETURN YOUR KING.**
Outside, the hundreds of shadow creatures in the streets began marching toward the cottage in unison, their pale eyes fixed on Elara.
**DELIVER HER TO THE VOID... OR WATCH YOUR REALM BURN TO ASH.**
Elara looked at Kael. Kael looked back at her.
Neither of them said a word.
Because in that horrifying, silent second, they both understood the terrifying truth:
The Void had just demanded a trade—the King's life for Elara's soul.
