Chapter 7: The Divided Realms

The first blood-curdling scream tore through the night, shattering the fragile peace of the mortal village of Evermere. Mira whirled around toward the sound, her hand instinctively gripping the hilt of her silver dagger until her knuckles turned ghostly white. Then came another scream. And another. A chorus of pure terror echoed through the fog-shrouded streets. The boundary had shattered. The darkness of Aetheria had crossed the ancient threshold. Hundreds of shadowy, monstrous creatures poured through the pulsing rift, their claws scraping against wooden rooftops and their crimson eyes burning in the dark. They flooded the cobblestone streets like a plague of dark smoke, surrounding the small mortal settlement. Mira tightened her hold on the glowing blade. She stood completely alone in the village square, facing a wave of nightmares. But her eyes burned with fierce, unbreakable resolve. "Lyria..." Mira whispered into the cold night air, her voice trembling slightly. "I hope your ancient magic is enough to protect us." She slammed the silver dagger into the cobblestone ground. A blinding ring of divine starlight erupted outward, spreading across the dirt in a wide, protective ward. The first shadow beast pounced into the light, letting out a horrific shriek as its dark form disintegrated into ash and vanished into thin air. Mira allowed a faint, bitter smile to touch her lips. "One down... a thousand to go." But the shadow horde was endless. And rising behind them, looming over the burning rooftops, was a beast of nightmares—a colossal dragon with eyes like burning rubies and scales like molten obsidian. The red-eyed leviathan stepped slowly through the tearing rift, its enormous wings unfurling and blocking out the moon, casting Evermere into pitch darkness. The ground groaned beneath its terrifying weight. *You cannot stop the inevitable, mortal,* the dragon’s subterranean voice vibrated inside Mira’s mind, heavy with dark, ancient cruelty. Mira looked up at the terrifying beast without flinching. "I don't need to stop you, beast." The red-eyed dragon tilted its massive, horned head, its glowing eyes slitting. *Then why do you bleed for this useless soil? What are you doing?* "Buying time," Mira declared, lifting her chin. *For the Moon-Born child?* Mira’s faint smile vanished instantly, her heart dropping into a cold pit of dread. "Yes." The dragon threw its head back and let out a dark, mocking laugh that shattered the windows of nearby houses. *She is already coming, foolish mortal! She feels the rift calling to her blood!* Mira froze, her blood running cold as she stared at the glowing rift. "No..." *** Far across the dimensional veil, in the subterranean vault of Aetheria... Elara gasped, bolting upright as a sharp, agonizing pain pierced the very center of her chest. "Elara!" Kael was at her side in a fraction of a second, his warm hands wrapping around her arms as his golden eyes searched her pale face in absolute panic. "What is it?! Is the bond hurting you?!" "Evermere..." Elara choked out, clutching her chest as tears burned her eyes. "The village... it's burning, Kael!" Auren, the ancient white dragon who had escorted them through the subterranean passages, turned his massive head toward the northern horizon, his glowing eyes darkening with grave concern. *The Heart Gate has ruptured. The barrier between Earth and Aetheria is collapsing.* Elara scrambled to her feet, her voice laced with desperate urgency. "My aunt Mira is still there! She's fighting them alone! We have to go right now!" *Not yet, little moon,* Auren warned solemnly, lower his colossal snout to block the exit. Elara frowned, her silver wrist mark flaring with frustrated magic. "Why?! Every second we waste, people are dying!" *Because the red-eyed dragon is waiting at the threshold for your blood,* Auren revealed softly. Kael stepped in front of Elara, his hand resting on the hilt of his obsidian blade, his body radiating a dangerous, protective aura. "Who is this dragon? He commands shadow beasts that do not belong to my father's army." Auren let out a heavy, smoky sigh. *His name is Veyrath... The First Enemy of the Dragon King.* Kael’s brows furrowed in disbelief. "Veyrath? I have studied every war scroll in the Royal Archive. His name does not exist in our history." *Because your father erased every mention of his existence from the scrolls eighteen years ago,* Auren explained. *Before his corruption, Veyrath was once the supreme guardian of the Heartstone.* A heavy silence descended upon the cavern. Elara stared at the white dragon. "If he was a guardian... what changed him? What happened to him?" *Greed,* Auren murmured softly. *He sought to bend the Heartstone’s divine flame to his own will. And when the stone rejected his darkness, he reached into the Void between worlds... and found something far worse.* Elara’s eyes widened in realization. "So he isn't serving the Void... he's trying to control it?!" *He wishes to become the supreme tyrant of both realms,* Auren confirmed. Kael clenched his fists until his knuckles popped, dark black smoke curling from his shoulders. "Then we fly to Evermere and rip his head from his shoulders!" Auren shook his head sadly. *You cannot kill him, Prince of Shadows.* "Why?!" Kael growled. *Because as long as the Heart Gate remains open, Veyrath draws endless immortal energy directly from the Void. He is invincible.* Elara raised her glowing wrist, looking directly into Auren’s ancient eyes. "Then I will close the gate. My mother gave me the key." Auren nodded slowly. *Yes. Only the blood of the Moon-Born can seal the primordial rift. But there is a cruel price.* Elara’s breath hitched. "What price?" *The Heart Gate cannot be sealed from one side alone,* Auren revealed, his voice echoing with ancient sorrow. *One person must stand in the mortal realm to hold the threshold steady, while the other channels the Heartstone’s power from Aetheria to drop the iron lock.* Kael instantly understood the terrifying implication. He whirled toward Elara, his face draining of all color. "No. Absolutely not." *It is the only way,* Auren insisted softly. "NO!" Kael shouted, stepping between Elara and the dragon, his voice cracking with rare, unbridled emotion. "If the gate closes while we are separated by the rift... the magic will sever our bond! We will be trapped in different realms forever! I will never see her again!" "I will stay in Evermere!" Elara offered immediately, grabbing Kael’s trembling hand. "It's my home, Kael! I can hold the gate!" "I won't let you!" Kael snapped fiercely, his golden eyes burning with desperate love and possessiveness. "You are the only one who can channel the Heartstone! I will stay in the mortal realm and hold off Veyrath’s horde!" "You'll die there alone, Kael!" she cried, tears spilling over her lashes. "I can't live in a world where you are destroyed!" The unbearable weight of their impossible choice hung between them, suffocating and painful. Through their shared Dragon Heart Bond, their emotions collided—a devastating storm of fear, love, and the terrifying agony of an impending farewell. Suddenly, a soft, maternal whisper echoed gently inside Elara’s mind: *Trust the magic, my little moon. The Heartstone does not break what fate has woven...* Elara gasped, looking up toward the cavern ceiling. "Mom...?" There was no further answer, but a strange, peaceful clarity washed over Elara’s heart. She looked up into Kael’s tormented face, her fingers tightly intertwining with his. "We don't separate," Elara declared with absolute conviction. "We go together." Kael frowned in confusion. "Elara, you heard Auren. The gate requires—" Elara turned to the white dragon. "Can the Heartstone’s raw magic hold the gate open long enough for both of us to cross back after it's sealed?" Auren’s sapphire eyes flared with surprise. *It is a deadly gamble... But if you channel the flame directly into the threshold, it will buy a brief window before the portal snaps shut forever.* "How long?" Kael demanded sharply. *Ten minutes,* Auren answered. *Not a second more.* Kael looked down at Elara, a fierce, determined smirk cutting through his dark fear. "Ten minutes is more than enough time to tear Evermere apart." *Then take flight!* Auren roared, spreading his massive alabaster wings. *The fate of both worlds rests on your bond!* *** The sky above Evermere was a nightmare of blood-red clouds and dark lightning. When Kael descended from the clouds in his colossal black dragon form, carrying Elara safely on his back, her heart shattered at the sight below. Her childhood home—the quiet, peaceful village where she had grown up—was engulfed in dark flames. Kael slammed onto the village square, his massive wings sweeping away a dozen shadow beasts in a single blow. "Elara!" a frantic voice called out from behind a barrier of silver light. Elara leaped down from Kael’s back, sprinting through the ash. "Mira!" The two women embraced tightly amidst the chaos of war, holding each other as if afraid the other might vanish into thin air. "I knew you'd come back for me, sweet girl," Mira wept, kissing Elara’s forehead. "I thought I had lost you to the dragon kingdom!" "Never," Elara whispered, pulling back to inspect Mira’s bloodstained armor. "What happened here?" Mira glanced toward the swirling, unstable rift at the center of the village. "Veyrath... he breached the seal an hour ago." *ROAR!* A shadow fell over them as the colossal, red-eyed dragon landed heavily atop the village church, its claws shattering the stone steeple. Veyrath’s ruby eyes locked directly onto Elara’s glowing wrist. *The Moon-Born child returns to her cradle,* Veyrath purred, his deep voice dripping with dark nostalgia. *You carry Lady Selene's exact aura... She was always too compassionate, too fragile for this cruel world.* Elara stepped forward, her hand glowing with celestial starlight. "You knew my mother!" *I loved her once!* Veyrath snarled, his colossal wings fanning the flames around them. *Before that arrogant coward of a Dragon King stole her from my side and sealed me into the Void!* "He speaks the truth of his own madness," a booming, majestic voice echoed from the shadow portal. Elara, Kael, and Mira whirled around. Stepping out from the dark mist was the Dragon King himself—King Alden. His golden crown was tarnished with soot, his royal armor cracked, and his face drawn with decades of unhealable grief. He had pursued them through the tearing rift. "Father...?" Kael breathed, shifting back into his human form as he stood defensively in front of Elara. King Alden looked at his son, then turned his sorrowful gaze toward Elara. "You should never have awakened the Heartstone, child... Some secrets were meant to remain buried in the ash." Veyrath threw his head back in a mocking laugh. *Look at you, Alden! The great Dragon King, reduced to a hollow shell! You murdered Selene, you ruined your own sons, and now your world burns!* "I did what I had to do to keep the Void from consuming my kingdom!" King Alden roared, drawing his massive golden broadsword as dark fire ignited along the blade. "And today, I finish what we started eighteen years ago!" With a deafening roar, King Alden transformed into a radiant, golden dragon, flying straight into the air to collide with Veyrath! The two ancient leviathans clashed in the blood-red sky, their claws tearing into scales as torrents of golden dragonfire and shadow magic erupted across the clouds, shaking the very foundations of the earth! Mira grabbed Elara’s arm, pulling her toward the glowing stone archway at the center of the square. "Elara! The distraction won't last long! You have to reach the gate now!" "What about you, Mira?!" Elara cried over the roaring wind. "I will hold off the shadow beasts on the ground!" Mira declared fiercely, raising her glowing silver dagger. "Go! Save both our worlds!" Elara sprinted toward the ancient stone archway. Complex celestial runes were carved deep into the ancient granite. As she approached, the crescent mark on her wrist flared with blinding, liquid starlight. *OPEN...* a ancient voice whispered inside her mind. Elara hesitated for a single heartbeat, then slammed her palm against the stone archway. *WHOOSH!* The noisy war around her vanished into absolute, suffocating silence. Elara’s mind was instantly elevated into a cosmic realm. In her vision, she saw two giant, floating worlds—Earth and Aetheria—connected by a thin, glowing thread of silver magic. Millions of innocent human lives... millions of dragon souls. And swirling in the dark abyss between them was the Void—a hungry, endless mass of dark tentacles and screaming faces, clawing frantically at the thread, desperate to break through and consume everything. *You cannot stop the inevitable, child of starlight...* the dark entity inside the Void hissed directly into her soul. *Give up your heart... let us consume them all!* Tears of pure determination spilled down Elara’s cheeks as she planted her feet firmly against the stone. "I will never let you touch my people!" *Then you will burn alongside them!* "I may burn..." Elara shouted into the cosmic void, her voice echoing across dimensions. "But I will fight you until my last breath!" She channeled every ounce of the Heartstone’s divine blue fire into the stone archway! *BOOM!* A wave of blinding, incandescent starlight exploded across Evermere! The shadow creatures screamed in agony as the divine light vaporized them instantly. High above, Veyrath roared in shock as his immortal connection to the Void was violently severed! King Alden landed heavily beside the archway, shifting back into his human form, coughing up golden blood. He looked at Elara with a strange mixture of tragic pride and exhaustion. "She... she is actually sealing the primordial rift." Kael sprinted to Elara’s side, grabbing her free hand. The moment his skin touched hers, the silver light flared tenfold, accelerating the gate's closing sequence. "How much time do we have before the portal collapses permanently?!" Kael shouted over the roaring magic. Elara looked at the glowing celestial numbers burning in the sky above the arch. "Ten minutes! The timer has started!" **9 Minutes...** **8 Minutes...** **7 Minutes...** "We finish Veyrath now and cross back together!" Kael declared, drawing his sword. *NEVER!* Veyrath’s demonic voice bellowed from the storm clouds above. The red-eyed dragon, desperate and wounded, plummeted from the sky like a falling meteor! His jaw gaped wide, building a catastrophic ball of Void-fire aimed directly at Elara’s back! *If I cannot rule the Heartstone... THEN NEITHER REALM WILL SURVIVE!* "ELARA, WATCH OUT!" Kael screamed. Without a second thought, Kael transformed back into his massive black dragon form. He launched himself into the air, intercepting Veyrath mid-flight! The two massive beasts collided with catastrophic force directly inside the swirling threshold of the collapsing portal! "KAEL! NO!" Elara shrieked in absolute horror, her hand anchored to the closing stone archway. The portal was shrinking at a terrifying speed! **4 Minutes...** **3 Minutes...** Elara sobbed violently, her magic faltering as she watched Kael wrestling the monstrous red dragon inside the unstable rift. If she pulled her hand away to save him, the Void would break free and destroy Earth. If she kept channeling the magic... Kael would be trapped on the other side of the closed gate forever! *Don't stop, Elara!* Kael’s voice echoed directly inside her mind through their soul bond, weak and laced with agonizing pain. *Seal the gate! Protect your world!* "I can't lose you, Kael!" she sobbed, her heart breaking into a million pieces. "I love you! I can't live without you!" A long, painful pause stretched through their bond, filled with Kael’s deep, absolute devotion. *You won't lose me, little moon... I promise you.* **2 Minutes...** **1 Minute...** With a final, desperate roar, Kael used his dark lightning to blast Veyrath deeper into the dark abyss of the Void. But as the blast threw Veyrath back, the vacuum of the closing rift pulled Kael deeper into the darkness as well! Elara watched in helpless agony as Kael’s massive black wings were swallowed by the endless shadow. *SLAM!* The ancient stone archway erupted with a final flash of blinding starlight, and the Heart Gate snapped shut with a deafening thud. Absolute, heavy silence fell over the scorched village of Evermere. The red storm clouds vanished. The portal was gone. The stone archway was cold, lifeless granite once again. Elara collapsed onto her knees, her hands clutching her chest as a hollow, excruciating emptiness erupted where her bond with Kael used to pulse. Mira rushed forward, wrapping her arms around Elara’s trembling shoulders. "It's over, Elara... You saved us. The gate is sealed." Elara stared at the dead stone archway, her voice cracking into a heartbreaking sob. "No... it's not over." Because far away, on the other side of the sealed veil, trapped in the pitch-black abyss of the Void... Kael opened his gol den eyes in the dark. He was surrounded by endless shadows. And echoing from the deepest abyss of the Void was a chilling, primordial voice that did not belong to Veyrath, nor the Dragon King... *Welcome to the dark, Prince of Shadows... We have been waiting for the Guardian.*
