CHAPTER 1 — THE MAN SHE SWORE TO FORGET
Three years ago, Elena Carter had loved Alexander Black enough to believe he would never hurt her. She had been wrong. Three years later, she stood outside the tallest building in Blackstone City, staring at the silver letters engraved above the entrance. BLACKSTONE HOLDINGS. Her fingers tightened around the worn leather folder in her hands. For a moment, she almost turned around. Almost. Then she remembered the night her father had been arrested. The reporters. The flashing cameras. Her mother's tears. Her family's name dragged through every newspaper in the city. And Alexander standing across the room, looking at her as though she were a stranger. “You betrayed me, Elena.” His words had destroyed her more than anything else that night. She swallowed the bitterness in her throat. “I didn't come back for you,” she whispered. “I came back for the truth.” Taking a deep breath, Elena pushed open the glass doors. The lobby was exactly what she remembered. Elegant. Cold. Expensive. Marble floors stretched beneath rows of crystal lights, while employees dressed in perfectly tailored suits moved through the enormous building with hurried steps. Three years ago, Elena had walked through these doors holding Alexander's hand. Today, she entered alone. And nobody knew who she was. That was exactly how she wanted it. She approached the reception desk. “Good morning. I'm here for an interview.” The receptionist looked up. “Name?” “Elena Carter.” The woman typed something into the computer. “Mr. Black's Human Resources department is expecting you. Forty-second floor.” Elena's heart skipped. Mr. Black. Even hearing his name still hurt. She forced herself to smile. “Thank you.” She walked toward the elevators. Every step felt heavier than the last. When the elevator doors closed, she finally allowed herself to breathe. Her reflection stared back at her from the polished metal. She looked different now. Her long dark hair was pulled neatly behind her shoulders. Her clothes were simple but professional. Her eyes no longer carried the innocence Alexander remembered. Three years had changed her. Pain had changed her. She had learned that love could disappear overnight. She had learned that money could buy silence. And she had learned that powerful people could destroy ordinary families without ever facing consequences. The elevator stopped. Forty-second floor. Elena stepped out. A young assistant directed her toward a conference room where several candidates were already waiting. She sat quietly. One by one, candidates were called inside. Twenty minutes later, someone finally called her name. “Miss Carter?” Elena stood. “Yes?” “Mr. Black will see you now.” Her heart stopped. “Mr. Black?” The assistant looked confused. “Yes. The CEO.” Elena forced herself to move. The office door opened. And the world seemed to stop. Alexander Black stood beside the enormous windows overlooking the city. He wore a black suit that fit him perfectly. His dark hair was slightly longer than she remembered. His shoulders looked broader. His face was harder. Colder. More powerful. But it was still him. The man who had once kissed her beneath the summer rain. The man who had once promised they would grow old together. The man who had destroyed her family. Alexander turned. Their eyes met. Elena forgot how to breathe. For one terrible second, she wondered if he recognized her. His expression remained calm. His eyes moved over her face. Then down to the resume in his hand. Nothing. No shock. No recognition. Nothing. Elena almost laughed. Three years. She had spent three years trying to forget this man. And he couldn't even remember her. “Miss Carter,” Alexander said. His voice was deeper than she remembered. “Yes.” “Sit.” Elena sat opposite him. Alexander opened her resume. “Twenty-five years old. Business administration degree. Three years of experience in executive management.” “Yes.” “You're overqualified for this position.” “I need the job.” His eyes lifted. There was something about the way he looked at her that made Elena uncomfortable. “Why?” “Because I need a fresh start.” Alexander studied her. “A fresh start?” “Yes.” He leaned back. “Where were you working before?” “A private company.” “Why did you leave?” Elena paused. “Family reasons.” His expression didn't change. He looked back at her resume. Then he asked the question she had feared. “Have we met before?” Elena's heart slammed against her ribs. She looked directly into his eyes. “No.” The lie came out smoothly. Alexander continued watching her. For several seconds, neither of them spoke. Then his phone rang. He glanced at the screen and answered. “Mother.” Elena froze. Victoria Black. The woman who had stood beside Alexander on the night Elena's life collapsed. The woman who had told everyone that Elena was a liar. Alexander listened silently. His expression slowly hardened. “I'll deal with it.” He ended the call. Elena stood. “Thank you for your time.” “Sit down.” She stopped. Alexander looked at her. “You're hired.” Elena stared at him. “What?” “You heard me.” “But you haven't asked me anything about my qualifications.” “I've read your resume.” “You're hiring me based on a resume?” “No.” He stood. “I’m hiring you because I want to see how long you can keep lying to me.” Elena's blood ran cold. For the first time since entering the room, she saw something different in his eyes. Suspicion. She forced herself to remain calm. “I don't understand.” “You will.” He walked around the desk and stopped directly in front of her. He was close. Too close. Elena could smell the familiar scent of his cologne. Memories she had buried came rushing back. His arms around her. His voice whispering her name. The night he had told her he loved her. She stepped backward. Alexander noticed. His eyes narrowed. “Tomorrow. Eight in the morning.” “For what?” “You'll be my executive assistant.” Elena stared at him. “That wasn't the position I applied for.” “I changed it.” “Why?” Alexander's expression was unreadable. “Because I make the decisions here.” He walked back toward his desk. “You'll have your employment contract before the end of the day.” Elena picked up her bag. She turned toward the door. Her hand touched the handle. Then Alexander spoke. “Miss Carter.” She stopped. “Don't disappoint me.” Elena slowly turned around. Their eyes met again. She gave him a small smile. “I won't.” Then she walked out. The moment the door closed behind her, the smile disappeared. Her hands were shaking. She hurried toward the elevator. Only when the doors closed did she allow herself to lean against the wall. She had done it. She had entered Alexander Black's world again. She had gotten the job. But there was one thing she hadn't expected. He didn't remember her. And somehow, that hurt more than she thought it would. Elena reached into her bag and pulled out an old photograph. It was faded and slightly torn. She stared at the picture. She and Alexander were standing together three years ago. Happy. In love. Unaware of what was coming. Elena turned the photograph over. Written on the back were four words: FIND OUT WHO LIED. Her eyes hardened. “I will.” The elevator doors opened. Elena stepped out. She didn't see the security camera watching her from the corner. She didn't see the man standing several floors above her. Alexander Black was staring at the security monitor. The moment Elena disappeared from view, he picked up his phone. “Find everything you can about Elena Carter.” The person on the other end hesitated. “Everything?” Alexander's eyes remained fixed on the screen. “Everything.” He paused. Then his expression changed. Because something about Elena Carter's face had been bothering him since the moment she walked into his office. Something familiar. Something buried deep inside his memory. He opened an old file on his computer. A photograph appeared on the screen. A photograph from three years ago. Alexander stared at it. His face went pale. The woman standing beside him in the photograph... was Elena. His eyes narrowed. “That’s impossible.” Then another document appeared on his screen. And this time, Alexander stopped breathing. At the top of the document were three words: ELENA CARTER — MISSING. Alexander looked toward the closed office door. For the first time in three years, he wondered whether the woman he had hated... had never betrayed him at all. END OF CHAPTER 1
