On one wall, a narrow slit extended a couple of feet through the rocks to the outside. It appeared to be a window. She saw no light through the slit. Or, at best, a very dim light. Mostly what she saw was a wall of smoke. It undulated and rippled through the window. Assa walked to the window. Rat feet scampered over the floor as she moved. That was going to get irritating after a while, she thought. At the window she peered through the opening. The smoke was hot. She felt waves of heat emanating from it. She opened her wings and warmed them on the thermals rising from the smoke, even as she winced at the pain lacing through her wing bones.
