The sound of the dragons were no longer in her head. This was an immense relief to her. She shivered from the cold. That was not a terrible thing. It was important to feel the world around her, even if it meant being uncomfortable for a short time.
Her mind was not completely blank, however. Two voices were still there, pushing against her consciousness like cats trying to get through a door. Scratching, mewling.
Assa! Where are you? What’s going on? Are you okay?
Dawn and Dusk.
I’m flying, said Assa.
We know that, they said. Come back and save us.
I can’t, said Assa. Her wings were extended as far as they would go. She kept them open and let the air flow under them. She circled in lazy spirals, letting the ocean come up to meet her.
She didn’t much care how long that would take or
