CHAPTER 1
KYRA’S POV:
“I'm not crazy!” Kyra screamed as her parents watched the flower vase hit the wall. They both flinched as the vase made a loud bang against the wall before it shattered into a million pieces.
Kyra sank into her bed as she hid her face away in her palms in shame and began to sob.
“I'm not crazy.” She repeated, trying to convince herself. Her tone was soft now.
She wasn't mad that her parents wanted to promote her from shrink level crazy to rehab level crazy. Even she believed she was, in-fact ,insane.
Having an imaginary friend at five was one thing, but still talking to herself and hearing a voice she couldn't explain or shake away no matter what she did or used at twenty-two was another thing.
“Oh dear…” Her mother's soft voice followed after her. She stooped low and held both her hands. “We don't think you're crazy… we just want what's best for you.”
Kyra's eyes darted away from her mother to her father, who was just standing there, spectating.
“Tell her this is a bad idea,” Kyra pleaded.
“Kyra dear, your mother and I were not planning on this, but you left us no choice.”
“I'm doing everything I can, OK? I'm trying. I never miss an appointment with Dr Sharma. I take my medication_”
“We know, Kyra.” Her mother looked at her father knowingly and back at her. Kyra looked at both of them, not confused though. Kyra knew exactly what they had found out.
“Kyra_” Her father took a few steps closer. “We know you're overdosing on your medication again.”
Kyra had been caught, but there was still time for damage control.
“How's that my fault? You try living your entire life with a voice in your head and see how it feels.” She managed to say as tears flooded her eyes.
And just when she thought she had everything under control, her dad casually walked over to her drawer, put his finger through a partition at the side and pulled out a tiny transparent bag that contained tiny white tablets.
“These don't look like the drugs Dr Sharma gave you, Kyra.”
Yea, they didn't and they weren't.
***
“So you're the new kid, yea?”
Kyra heard from behind her but still refused to look away from the window. The rays of the sun were turning from a bright yellow to a dull orange, and she was far, far away from home.
“Oh, what? You're nonverbal too? That's a really rare mix of messed up.”
“I just want to be left alone.” She replied, still glued to the view from the window.
“Okayy.” The lady replied teasingly. “But it'll be sad if you missed out on all the fun.”
Kyra was frustrated and just wanted her out of the room. One annoying voice in her head was enough. She didn't need an annoying extra one. She turned to really get her point across.
“Can you not_” And she cut herself off.
This shabby-looking woman who had the same ugly green uniform as Kyra and impossibly dark under eyes was dangling a zip-lock bag in front of her. The content looked very familiar.
“How did you_” she stuttered, too shocked to speak coherently.
“How did I know this was your fix, or how did I smuggle it in? One answer— I know a guy.”
Kyra stood up and tried to grab the bag but she was too slow.
“You and I are probably going to be here for a while, so it'll be nice to be pals, don't you think?”
Kyra stood there, her eyes wide open with hunger for a fix.
“What do you say you join us tonight after the row call, and you get one of these?” She teased as she wiggled the pill-filled bag in front of her.
Sounds great. See you at ten, don't be late.” she stated, not waiting for Kyra to give a response before walking out of the room, leaving her completely dumbfounded.
***
The night was still young.
Kyra fought the will to not go out that night but the pills…
The mere thought of them made her mouth water and her mind race.
She wasn't in any hurry to go clean anyway. Ever since she started, the voice wasn't there anymore. Now she was one week without it, and she knew it was just a matter of time before she started hearing his voice again.
“... woods tonight…”
There it was—the persistent voice in her head. Sometimes she could almost hear a growl beneath the surface of his words. It was like some sort of deranged beast.
How did he know she was going to the woods tonight? Was he watching her? Was he real? Or maybe it was just her subconscious trying to convince her to go.
It was almost time for the sneak out, and she did really want to get his voice out of her head, so against her not so great judgement, Kyra honored the invitation and snuck out of the building.
She was met with a bit of an obstacle though. She decided too late and had to sneak out alone, leaving her to navigate the woods on her own.
It wasn't long before she got herself lost.
“Hello?! Anybody here?!” She was greeted with crickets.” Where did everyone go?” She got no response.
The quiet was soon disrupted by low growls from within the forest. Then she started hearing footsteps that were coming right in her direction.
And that was when realization hit—Kyra was lost in the middle of the woods, but she was not alone.
She froze, not able to get her feet off the ground. Her breathing increased and her heart raced like never before. She stood there, perfectly still. Maybe if she didn't act like prey, they would leave her alone.
The footsteps and sounds of moving leaves were closer now and amidst the darkness of the night, Kyra could make out what the figures moving towards her were.
Wolves.
There were so many of them.
They quickly formed a circle around her and as Kyra closed her eyes and accepted her fate as a tear streamed down her cheeks, one of the wolves from the pack got into the ring and approached her slowly.
It was bigger than the others. It had brown fur and eyes as dark as the night sky itself.
And as she closed her eyes in anticipation of her end but felt nothing, Kyra peeped through her lids.
That's when she saw the most majestic man with hair so similar to the wolf. She almost lost her life a few seconds ago.
Could it be?
He was practically naked under the moonlight. His clothes seemed like they had been ripped off his body.
He stared right into her eyes with hunger.
And that was when she heard that voice in her head again. It was louder, clearer and more assertive than it had ever been before.
“MATE!”
