Chapter 1: The Heirloom
Asad was watching the downpour from the rooftop.
He was getting soaked in the rain but didn't feel like getting up. He was mesmerized. He had been away from his country for a little long and had already started missing the rain. The soft little touch of the rain coming down on him, the smell of fresh mud that filled everywhere, the blurriness that covered his vision, and the sweet rhythm of the rainfall that calmed his soul. He got up from the chair and started roaming around. Suddenly, he noticed the book in his hands. He was so lost in his thoughts that he had almost forgotten about it. He hurried to the shed in a corner and kept it open on a table to dry it. The book was titled " The Kybalion". A rather brief introductory book on Hermetic philosophy. He looked at its condition and sighed a little bit. It had cost him a fortune. He just can't afford to simply lose it in the rain.
It was very noisy outside a while ago. His father and uncles were having a sort of heated argument in the courtyard. He didn't know the details, but it was something about the heirloom issues. His Grandmother had issued a will a few days back and wanted to announce it in front of the entire family tonight. The problem originated there. Granny had specially asked for him and another of his cousins in the will. She wanted to give away something that belonged to his grandfather. Everyone's concerned about the little favoring on his end.
Asad wandered around the roof's edge and looked below. His mother was standing next to a pillar on the balcony on the east side. She was looking very worried. She was probably looking for him. That is the first thing she does whenever there is stormy weather outside. At this time, she gets very agitated and starts acting like a maniac until she finds both of her sons safe and sound. Maybe she has some sort of bad memories associated with it. Asad never cared to ask her about it.
Actually, he never cared much about any of his family issues anyway. He just gets by with whatever is necessary. He was very confused when he first heard about the will and the little favor that everyone suspected. He wasn't close to his granny at all, just limited to casual greeting and replying when necessary. He didn't know much about his grandfather, although he knew the fact that his grandfather had named him when he was born. Sometimes he felt guilty about it. Nobody talked much about this topic and he didn't feel the need to press on it.
Asad heard a footstep. Someone was calling for him.
"Asad! Asad! Are you there on the roof?"
He recognized the voice immediately. Anahita, one of his distant relatives. The very person his granny had asked for along with him.
"Asad! You halfwit, what are you doing out in the rain ?"
Asad tried to act indifferently. He felt like teasing her. Anahita came towards him angrily and grabbed his hand.
" Your mother's gonna kill you for sure today."
" None of your business." Asad gave a cold shoulder ." I want to stay here for a little longer."
" And I wanna punch you in your face right now. Come over here quickly." She dragged him towards the shed.
" Getting too romantic are we ?" she scolded him as he was drying up with towels. " Getting wet in the rain and reciting poetry in sadness? " She looked at the book on the table and looked dumbstruck.
"Wait, were you really doing that?"
"No, no it's not like that." He tried to explain. " The commotion outside was getting on my nerves, so I tried to read some books here to get away from it."
"Can't blame you for that." She peeked through the roof rail and found Asad's mom still on the lookout for him. " You have to wait here until she goes out of sight. And then quickly go to your room and make up some excuse about where you were."
Asad nodded. " So when did you get here?" he asked.
" Yesterday at midnight. My dad couldn't come due to his office. I will be missing some of my quizzes too, but it doesn't matter much."
Asad looked at her face. She wasn't showing it but he noticed a faint bit of sadness in her. She is very fond of Granny. From a very small age, she has been attached to her and used to play with her all the time. Even now, she visits her first thing whenever she comes to her hometown.
Anahita looked back at him. " What is it ?"
Asad blushed a little. " It's just that I was thinking about Granny's decision. Why choose us ?"
" Actually, I have been thinking about it too. " She was looking pensive. " We are not some kind of Aristocrat family that possess family treasure to pass on to the next generation. But there is another possibility you know."
"What ?" Asad asked eagerly.
"Sometimes in a family like ours, the family head uses this opportunity to ask for her final wish." She paused a little. " Like marrying off their grandchildren with each other. "
It caught him off guard. " Are you joking ?"
"No, no, I am serious." She looked around a bit and whispered to him. "Actually I have suspected it for a while. Granny wants us to marry each other. She used to joke about it for a long time and I haven't paid attention to it until now, but after finding out about the will..." she didn't finish the sentence.
" What kind of jokes, by the way?" Asad tried to sound as casual as possible.
" You know, girlish talk. Like who is fit for each other, something like that. Don't bother about it."
Asad made a sound like hmm. He looked through the rails.
" Mom's gone inside. I better go." He dashed through the stairs.
"Hey, wait." She called from behind. " I think we should talk about this."
"Later !!"
Asad quickly went to his room and locked his door. He quickly changed into dry clothes and jumped on his bed. He needs to forget about all of this. He tried to fall asleep. Maybe when we will wake up he will have forgotten about it. But the more he tried to do it, the more it kept floating inside his head.
That i***t !!
