Chapter one: The Betrayal I Never Saw Coming
SOPHIA
“Everything is fine now. Just rest for a few minutes, and you can go home.” The nurse smiled.
“Hmm.” I nodded and thanked her before she turned and left.
The sharp smell of disinfectant filled my nose as I sat on the hospital bed. The machines beside me gave soft beeps, but I barely noticed them. I placed a hand over my stomach and smiled.
I could picture Ethan and me holding our baby together and smiling at our little one. Maybe this was what having a family was supposed to feel like.
I remembered the little girl who always hoped to be adopted but was never lucky. A tear slipped down my cheek. Finally, one of my dreams had come true.
Ethan was working on his startup company. He could spend hours talking about his ideas, his plans, and the future he wanted for us. Whenever he talked about his dreams, I couldn't help but believe in him.
Oh, it was like I had forgotten someone important... Victoria!
She was the only one who accepted me as her best friend. When everyone thought I was an orphan and stayed away from me, she always showed up for me. She had been there during my darkest times and brought light into my life. My closet was filled with the gifts she had given me.
A friend in need is a friend indeed.
No. I couldn't wait to share my little secret with her. I could already picture how excited she would sound when she found out she was going to be a godmother.
Today was probably the beginning of a new chapter in my life.
Tears filled my eyes. My lips stretched into a smile, and my heart raced with excitement.
I reached for the papers beside my bed, slipped them into my cream handbag, and stood.
I wore a soft, loose-fitting pastel-blue dress that fell just below my knees, paired with flat sandals. My long, dark hair rested over my shoulders, and my face looked fresh and natural without makeup.
I looked simple, but today, I felt beautiful. I wanted Ethan to look at me the way he did when we first met.
Marriage needed love to sustain it, and I believed having a child would bring us even closer.
I walked toward the entrance. I couldn't wait to share the news with Ethan. I stepped outside the hospital and breathed in the warm afternoon air.
The sound of car horns filled the street as taxis moved along the busy road. A woman walked past me, holding a little boy's hand while he happily jumped over the cracks in the pavement. I smiled.
Soon, one day, I would hold my child's hand too. My heart fluttered at the thought.
Across the street, colorful shops stood beside a small restaurant. The smell of grilled meat and fried onions drifted toward me, making my stomach rumble.
Even the traffic that usually annoyed me didn't bother me. The city seemed brighter, louder, and more alive than I remembered.
I hugged my handbag closer to my chest.
Inside it was the news that would change Ethan's life.
I couldn't wait to see his face when I told him.
A taxi slowed down beside me.
I raised my hand.
“Taxi!”
The driver came to a halt.
“Rosewood District,” I said softly.
The driver nodded before driving away.
The car disappeared among the tall buildings of Valemount as I rested my head against the seat.
My phone buzzed. It was from Aurelia General Medical Center—the nurse who had attended to me earlier.
“Hey, hello…”
But I couldn't hear anything on the other end. I slipped my phone back into my bag. Since I had an appointment two weeks from now, I would wait until then. But for now, all I could think about was Ethan.
Today was his birthday.
I should hurry home and prepare a candlelit dinner for him, along with a small cake.
I had already prepared the perfect gift for him. I grinned to myself, resting a hand over my stomach. Soon, I hoped, this would be where our little family began.
I could already picture him staring at me in disbelief before pulling me into his arms. He would kiss my forehead before lifting me off the ground.
I couldn't stop myself from laughing quietly at the thought.
Ethan was going to lose his mind tonight. Maybe I should change into my pajamas before he comes back from work.
I unknowingly laughed out loud.
The driver's voice pulled me back from my thoughts.
“Madam, we're already at Rosewood Junction,” he said.
I hurriedly handed him the money.
“Thank you,” I said, waving my hand.
Rosewood District came into view as I stepped out of the taxi. Tall apartment buildings stood along the busy streets, with small shops and cafés filling the spaces between them. Cars moved slowly through the afternoon traffic while people hurried along the sidewalks.
Our home wasn't far from the junction. I adjusted my handbag and started walking, already imagining Ethan's surprised face when I showed him his birthday gift.
Outside our apartment, Ethan's car was parked.
Perfect! I was happy about that, but what about the romantic atmosphere I had planned?
It didn't matter. Maybe some other time.
I walked toward the staircase. Finally, I reached our flat and opened the parlour door.
“Darling, I'm back!”
Only silence welcomed me.
Before I could say another word, my eyes landed on the dinner table.
A red bra was lying on it, with a torn dress beside it.
My breath became uneven.
I dragged my feet toward the bedroom.
“Don't stop, Ethan!”
A woman's voice.
Before I could process what I had heard, a man's voice followed.
“Don't you love it?”
My bag dropped to the ground as I stepped backward.
My fingers tightened around the door handle.
Ethan's voice drifted from the bedroom.
I froze.
That wasn't the voice of a man waiting for his wife.
My smile slowly disappeared.
The moment the door opened, I froze.
“Ethannn!” I screamed.
Ethan stood up and reached for his boxers while Victoria covered herself with the bedsheet.
“Sophia... wait. Let me explain,” he said, walking toward me.
“Don't...” I stepped backward.
My eyes burned with tears. I rushed toward Victoria and dragged the bedsheet from her body.
I raised my hand impulsively.
“Don't you dare! Are you out of your mind?” Ethan roared.
“No...” I collapsed to the ground.
My knees went numb beneath me. I stared at Ethan, but his face blurred behind my tears.
Five years.
Five years of loving him, trusting him, and building a life with him.
And now he was standing there with Victoria.
I pressed a trembling hand against my chest, struggling to catch my breath.
I felt empty inside.
“You don't need to do this, Sophia. You still remain my wife! I just made a mistake. Every man makes mistakes. It's nothing new, dear!”
I stared at Ethan.
For a moment, I couldn't recognize the man standing in front of me.
Was this really the same man who had once held my hands and promised to love me?
My lips parted, but no words came out.
Five years of love, five years of trust, and he had reduced everything to a simple mistake.
I looked at him again, hoping to find even a little regret in his eyes.
There was none.
Something inside me went cold.
Tears rolled down my cheeks without stopping.
Meanwhile, Victoria hurried to put on her dress and moved away from the bed.
“Sophia, I'm... sorry,” Victoria pleaded.
“Sorry? What did I just hear you say? Sorry?”
I slowly forced myself to stand.
I grabbed her blouse, but before I could say another word, Ethan grabbed my hand and pulled me away from her.
“Enough, Sophia! Can you be a little mature? Conduct yourself like someone with home training,” Ethan snapped.
“Did you actually say that to me, Ethan?”
I closed my eyes for a moment and took a deep breath.
Then I reached for my wedding ring and pulled it from my finger.
Without another thought, I dropped it onto the floor.
Clink!
I didn't look back.
I ran through the door.
