Rose was roaming about the household, exploring her new home. This included the chore of opening the curtains in every room that she walked into. As she thought, the house was very magnificent and exquisite when there was natural light filling the rooms. At this moment, she was in a secluded tearoom and opening the curtains when someone stopped at the door.
At first, Rose did not notice the person until she turned around and she was startled.
“Who are you?” They asked, and Rose saw that it was yet again another beautiful woman. It made her heart sink to her stomach for a reason she could not yet explain.
“My name is Rose Adler. I’m-”
“Oh, it’s you,” the woman interjected, crossing her arms over her chest, and leaning against the doorframe. She did not say anything for a few seconds as she took to observing Rose’s demeanor and attire.
“Might I know who you are?” Rose asked after the short silence. The woman walked away from the door and came closer to Rose, the entire time her eyes going up and down her body. Once she was close, she walked around her, still observing her with those judgmental eyes.
“Yes, you may. I am the second… well, I suppose now I’m the third lady of this household,” she said, stopping in front of Rose and reaching her hand out for her to shake, which she did, “My name is Jade, Xander’s favorite sister.”
Rose was surprised but she shook Jade’s hand, nonetheless. How many siblings did Xander have?
“You’re wondering how many siblings Xander has, aren’t you?” Jade asked as though she read Rose’s mind, “Which means that you’ve met Lola. Don’t worry. I’m not like her. I’m actually very nice. That’s why I’m Xander’s favorite sister.”
Rose could not help but wonder what Jade’s obsession with being Xander’s favorite sister was all about. Jade was only twenty years old. Her entire outfit was constructed from expensive, limited-edition pieces. Her skin was so flawless. She never needed to wear any foundation.
Now that she was looking at her closely, Rose realized that Jade closely resembled Xander. One would think they were twins, but Rose knew it was otherwise. Xander was definitely older than Jade. Either way, Rose liked Jade. The sister was a bit strange, but she was the only one who had been nice to Rose since she arrived.
“Wayne called for me. He had many things to say and frankly speaking, he was right. You don’t deserve to marry into my family,” Jade’s next words were so surprising that Rose did not know if she should have been offended or not.
Jade continued, “Of course, that can be fixed. That’s why I’m here. You don’t seem to realize what sort of family you married into. The ‘Evans’ are a prominent and aristocratic family. We’re quite popular. You can’t be dressing up like… that.” Jade pointed at Rose’s outfit with a finger of disgust.
“There’s nothing wrong with the way I’m dressed,” Rose said defensively. She was offended. Jade was nice but she was too blunt. Rose felt insulted by her words.
“Rose, honey, you have to listen to me,” Jade said, walking closer to rose and grabbing the bottom of her floral dress, “This… is an embarrassment. I’m ashamed just by looking at you.”
Wayne was proud of what he had done. Lola was stern and frightening, but Jade was of a different temperament. The ladies of the Evans household were vicious. He knew that Jade would sink her sharp teeth into Rose’s flesh. Rose, the country bumpkin, would not be able to live under the same roof as Jade for more than a couple of days at most.
When he stepped into the tearoom, he was quite pleased to see that Jade had already started her work. Rose was very uncomfortable, proven by the scowl on her face.
“Wayne, you’re here. Perfect,” Jade said, grabbing Rose’s hand and dragging her to the door, “I might need some help cleaning up this mess.” At this point, Rose could not take it anymore. She violently pulled her hand away, but Jade’s grip was as strong as her brother’s, and she failed to escape. It was the same hand that Xander grabbed earlier, and it was hurting her now.
“Don’t resist. I promise I’ll have you sparkling by the time I’m done,” Jade urged her, but she would not listen.
“Let go of me!” Rose called out to Jade, who would not listen. Instead, Jade ordered that Wayne help her with dragging her off to her bedroom. Wayne was simply pleased, but he could not express how pleased he was yet.
“Lady Jade, the young master would not be happy to learn-”
“Why would he not be happy? He loves me. He’ll understand that I’m doing him a favor,” Jade said, pulling on Rose hand. Rose winced from the pain. She had had enough. Pulling back her hand, she used all her strength and grabbed Jade’s arm, twisting it behind the woman’s back. Jade screamed.
“Let go of me, you disgusting creature!”
Rose scoffed. So much for being a nice person, she thought.
“I told you to let me go before and you did not listen,” Rose explained. She hated Jade’s forceful nature. Jade was a spoiled woman who was used to getting whatever she wanted as well as having people do anything she told them to.
Well, Rose was not having any of it. She wanted to avoid making enemies in the Evans household as much as possible, however, there was only so much she was willing to tolerate. Humiliation was not one of them.
“Lady Rose, please release Lady Jade at once! You’re hurting her!” Wayne pleaded with Rose, concerned about Jade’s health.
‘Funny,’ Rose thought, ‘You did not seem to care when she was hurting me.’
“I understand that you don’t like me, but you can’t treat me like I’m some doll that you can dress up and play around with,” Rose firmly told Jade. Jade rolled her brown eyes.
“I’m not treating you like a doll; I want to make you presentable for our guests and the rest of the world,” she said. This time it was Rose who rolled her eyes. That was no different from treating her like a doll. Jade would never admit that she was in the wrong.
“You’re putting shame on the family name. Xander won’t love some peasant-”
“Jade!” A booming, majestic voice called out from the door, drawing everyone’s attention. Wayne was shocked to see who was standing at the door. As for Rose, she released Jade’s hand. Jade clutched her red wrist and forced tears to well up in her eyes.
“Look what this simple woman did to me, Grandfather! I was just trying to help make her presentable!” Jade cried, walking closer to her grandfather. So, that was head of the household? Rose thought. That fierce and authoritative look in his eyes… Rose hated it. This man was by no doubt involved in her grandmother’s death.
