Mason stood quietly by the door, where he had been for the last few minutes, observing the events unfold in the tearoom. Jade treated Mason as though he were her life support. She ran to his side like a wounded animal.
“My Master, Lady Jade only wishes to make the new lady of the house appealing,” Wayne began.
“She is much too crude to be seen in public,” and Jade added immediately afterwards. The two of them were like toddlers trying to explain something in an incoherent manner to their parents. Rose stood back unobtrusively.
“What would the public think if they were to see that someone like her joined the family?” Jade added, “She almost broke my arm, too!” Rose could not remain quiet at the accusation.
“You were the one who was forcefully dragging me with you!” Rose called out. She tried to maintain her composure, but she was not that much older herself. She was still youthful and headstrong, as was Jade.
“I didn’t do it on purpose! I swear, Grandfather, I was only trying to be nice to her!”
“That’s enough, Jade!” Mason’s voice was lowered yet Rose could feel the authority behind it, “How many times have I taught that material aspects do not matter much in life?”
“I understand, but-”
“You don’t understand. Leave us be,” Mason ordered Jade, who nodded but did not leave the room without childishly frowning at Rose. At any other time, Jade would have become defensive. Wayne dastardly hurried out with Jade.
“I apologize. I spoiled my grandchildren far too much,” Mason started once he was left alone with Rose.
Rose held in a sigh, “Yes, grandparents tend to do that.” She watched Mason as he walked across the room and sat in a leather armchair, motioning for her to join him. She chose to sit in a chair directly facing him.
Mason was an aged man. He had all the signs that he had lived a long, tiresome yet fulfilling life. He had many wrinkles to show off his long life, and the grayed hair that he wore like a holy veil. His facial expression was very stern. He did not smile even a little when he spoke to Jade earlier.
“My family is too much to handle,” Mason said.
“Your granddaughters more specifically,” and she said, and this time he did not shy away from giving her small smile. She did not like that one bit. She could not tell what Mason was thinking. His face and personality were too bold. Had she not been on a mission, she would have never desired to interact with him on any occasion.
“Yes, yes. But don’t allow them to give you a hard time. You have as much authority in this house as they all do,” he said. Rose failed to understand how he was acting so nicely towards her. As though the reason she was there was not because he discarded her sister the moment he found out she could not bear any children?
Rose’s mobile phone started vibrating in her pocket and she noticed. The timing was too inconvenient because she was supposed to receive calls only during a specific time of the day which had not yet arrived.
She courteously stood up and clasped her hands in front of her, lowering her head slightly for a few seconds.
“I feel very welcomed in my new home, Master-”
“I’ll be your grandfather from now on,” Mason replied. Rose was taken aback. She managed to maintain her composure and nodded.
“Yes, grandfather. I’ll be taking my leave now,” she said and walked out of the tearoom. He stole her grandmother away from her and now he had the nerve to try and replace her? Rose was furious by the time she walked out of the room. She did not notice that it was obvious how angry she was. A maid had to carefully step aside when she saw Rose marching down the hallway out of fear.
Rose found an empty guest bedroom and snuck inside, locking the door. She was finally alone so she pulled the phone out of her pocket and answered, angrily:
“You aren’t supposed to call me now, Reese!”
The person on the other hand was stunned.
“I see you’re having a bad day… but this is very important, Rose,” Reese began, succeeding with calming Rose down from her stirred mood. What could be so important that Reese had to urgently call her instead of waiting for the usual time?
“I just spoke to Yolan… seems that someone is digging around your private information,” he stopped to hear Rose sigh from frustration. She could not think of it to be anyone else besides him.
“It’s Xander. He was very curious about my medical history and identity when I met him,” she explained, honestly impressed by how fast Xander was when it came to getting down to business. She had been with him only twenty minutes or so earlier.
“I get that your just recently married him but at least try to distract him for a bit,” Reese said, “We can’t get any work done if we constantly have to lead him off your scent trail.”
“I’m the one who led him on to the scent trail,” Rose said after a moment of thought.
“What? Why would you do that, Rose?” Reese was beyond confused.
“He figured it out on his own before I knew it. I had no choice but to tell him that I can heal him. I need to gain his trust…”
Reese did not say a word. He understood the lengths she was willing to go to for her grandmother.
“Just… don’t trust him at all, okay?” He asked, “There’s more to him than you might know. He was not just born into a rich family as an heir. He had already founded his own company by the time he was twenty years old. He’s in charge of the economic market and could single-handedly monopolize it for his own gain. Do not underestimate how powerful Xander and his family are.”
Rose listened to all of Reese’s words carefully.
“I never thought it would be easy,” she said, “Such a pity. He had so much taken from him by a simple car accident.”
“Do not pity him. This man has the entirety of London at the palm of his hand,” added Reese, “Anyway, what am I supposed to do about this person snooping around?”
Rose glanced at the door. Xander was far too smart. She had to think on his level.
“He’ll be more suspicious if he doesn’t find anything during this search. Give him some false evidence… I mean, it has to be partially true, at least,” she suggested, “Plant some documents like my medical degree or the school where I studied.”
Reese sighed, “I don’t like this, Rose. That might be giving him too much.”
“I’ve got no other choice, Reese. I have to satisfy him enough to not go searching for more,” said she.
Reese was reluctant but he would do as she told him to. He hung up the call and Rose erased the call from her phone’s call history. She never wanted t travel with a phone because she knew that it would be a hindrance to her at some point. It did help her this time with discovering that Xander was researching her background. Well, she would give him an entertaining game to play on his search.
