“If I’m not needed anymore, I’ll take my leave,” Eric said, Rose having made him so uncomfortable that he needed to leave and ponder a few things.
Xander nodded and watched Eric leave the room. He closed the door on his way out.
“Who was that?” Rose asked immediately afterwards. Xander sat back against the pillows.
“Does a moral obligation to not lie not cover being deceitful?” He asked, “You know who that was.” Rose smiled but sighed inwardly.
“Of course, but I don’t know his name,” she said, which was the truth. She had already deduced that Eric was Xander’s private investigator, or someone alone those lines.
“His name is Eric Noor. He’s my assistant,” Xander said. He was willing to tell her what she wanted. Honesty was a two-way street.
“It’s time for you to take your medication again,” she said, reaching out to gently caress his shoulder but he flinched, not going unnoticed by her.
“Oh, I’m sorry. I did not realize you don’t like to be touched,” she said. She recalled that she did touch him before when administering the injection. Could it be a timely response?
“No,” Xander shook his head, “My arm muscles are aching. It has to be a side effect of the injection.”
Rose frowned and he saw, becoming concerned.
“This isn’t a normal side effect of the medication I injected into you,” she quickly turned to the nightstand where she had left her equipment, “The poison in your system must be clashing with the medication.”
She was panicked and he could not help but calmly watch her at work. He should have been worrying for his health but when she was there with him, he felt safe. Her blonde hair, though frizzled at the ends, looked so soft. A part of her hair was parted at her neck, and he could see her skin. He wanted to reach out and caress it, and so he did.
Rose was pouring water into the glass when she felt the hairs on her neck tingle. She quickly stood up because the touch was akin to a tickle that shocked her. Luckily, she did not drop the glass or spill the water.
“Did you touch me?” Rose asked, her face so hot and red that it could give lava a run for its money.
“Is it not natural for a husband to want to touch his wife?” He asked so confidently and nonchalantly that it irritated Rose to the core. But she loved it, nonetheless.
“Well… yes. Just… don’t do it so unexpectedly,” she stuttered.
Xander smiled, “Are you really that sensitive?”
“You’re the one who is crying about his sore muscles. Now, take this,” she handed him the glass of water and the pill. He swallowed the pill and Rose took the glass once he was done drinking.
“Continuing on with your ‘moral obligation to not lie’,” he picked up the papers, “You started an internship but it did not last.” Rose sat down on the bed again. She would not lie to him, as she said she would not.
“The university awarded me an internship at the nearest hospital for my good grades,” she said.
“And?” He asked for her to continue.
“I left after a month. They couldn’t teach me anything I didn’t know. I passed all of the exams and tests with great ease. I even performed emergency surgery on a child who broke his leg,” she explained. Xander was astounded. He knew Rose was bright and was very skilled, but he never realized the extent of her skills.
“You’re brilliant,” he said, causing Rose to blush and look away. She had not received such a compliment from anyone since her grandmother passed.
“Thank you. Do your muscles still ache?”
“Only a little,” he said, feeling that the medicine was working amazingly fast. His muscles had been constantly aching for quite a while and none of the medication he was given by other doctors worked as greatly as hers did.
“Let me massage your shoulders. An expert in acupuncture knows the right spots,” she said, instructing him to sit up. He did as she asked. She moved the large pillows to the other side of the bed and shifted to sit on her knees in their place.
She started by gently holding his shoulders, then she moved her hands to the base of his neck, pinching his muscles firmly yet gently at the same time. When she heard him suddenly sigh from the relied of the tension on his shoulder, she froze as her heart skipped a beat. She was incredibly grateful that she was behind him, and he could not see her.
“Is it too much?” She asked, trying not to reveal how flustered she was. Xander shook his head. His eyes were closed, and he was too relaxed to say anything. She smiled and proceeded to massage his shoulders and arms for the next 15 minutes.
No one said a word and the silence was a wonderfully comfortable one. Rose knew how to use her fingers and hands to get her patient relaxed. When she was done, Xander frowned because he did not want her to stop.
“Why are you stopping?” He asked as she moved away from behind him and stood up, stretching her legs because her knees were getting sore.
“I can’t massage the same muscles for too long. They’ll become too relaxed, and you won’t be able to use them for some days,” she explained, “If you want me to continue, I could massage your legs.”
That suggestion did not sit well with Xander.
“What’s the point? I can’t feel them anyway,” he said. He wanted to feel Rose’s arms pressing against his muscled again but that would not be possible since his legs had no feeling.
Rose smiled and took hold of his shoulders, pushing him down to lay on the bed.
“Believe me. This is for your own benefit,” she said softly. Xander did not resist. When he was laying down and his muscles relaxed completely because he was not using them to stay seated, he felt so relieved that he thought he could just fall asleep right then. He had not been able to sleep well without the aid of sleeping pills in a long time.
She climbed on to the bed and sat on her knees by his legs. She moved the bed covers away and for the first time, she was mesmerized by how toned his legs and their muscles were. How had she not noticed before?
“Did you always work out?” She asked to make light conversation.
“Daily,” he answered, closing his eyes again.
“You must miss it,” she said next.
“Every day,” and he replied. She smiled and decided that she would start with his calf muscles.
It was only a minute away she started when his eyes shot opened. Rose did not notice and happily continued to work on his legs.
It happened again. For only a brief moment, he felt her squeezing his calf muscles. Her touch was so soft and delicate that it was like being touched by an angel… or the paw of a cat.
Rose did not notice him reached his arm out until he grabbed the back of her neck and pulled her head closer to his. He used the elbow of his other arm to prop his upper body up. Now, her face was only a few inches away from his.
She stared into his blue eyes but he could not see her green ones behind her large glasses. He reached out to take them off but she moved her head away.
“Xander? Is something wrong?” She asked. His grip on her neck was not that firm, however, she was uncomfortable and excited at the same time.
“I want to see your face,” he said in almost a whisper. Rose blushed as her heartbeat accelerated.
“No, I don’t think-”
“You’re the one who insisted on seeing my face earlier. Can’t I do the same?” He asked, his voice still very calm. Nothing could have ruined his relaxation if they tried; not Jade or anyone else.
“It’s not the same,” she replied shyly.
“Why not?” He asked.
She took a brief moment to speak. She always had her face hidden behind her large glasses and the bangs her blonde her was cut into for one reason.
“I’m not very good looking. You wouldn’t like to look at my face.”
Xander almost laughed. Such a trivial thing that she worried about. Rose was the only one who could help him. He’d reject the world’s most beautiful woman for Rose because no one’s beauty would help his situation.
“What is with your obsession with beauty? You’re so smart and talented that I thought something as minor as that would never bother you,” he stated, a little disappointed.
“Well, I am. I’m not like other women. I’m always treated differently because of my face. The only time I get recognition or respect is when people can’t see my face that well,” Rose’s voice quivered. He did not need to see her face to know that she was upset. And he would not upset her further. He was patient. She was already his wife. It would not be long before she would trust him enough to show her face to him.
“Okay, I won’t pester you on it,” he said.
Rose was surprised that he did not insist on seeing her face. Most men, like the men she interacted with at the university, insisted on seeing her face. Some of them thought that only a beautiful woman could be capable of being that smart. They had lower body thinking. Others wanted to see if she was unappealing so that they could taunt her. Their goal was to make her lose confidence so that she could fail and they could take her place.
But Joseph was different. He was not jealous of her. His self-esteem was high enough that he did not need to feel any jealousy or envy.
“Don’t you ever get jealous?” her curiosity was piqued. Xander finally released her neck and lay down to relax again.
“Am I supposed to be jealous of something?” He asked. Of course, he did not need to be jealous of anything. He was the best in his trade and received top marks when he was in school and university. His family was rich and famous.
“I guess not,” she said, continuing to massage his legs.
