Adeline woke up with a start, sitting up and losing her balance immediately as her head spun. She grabbed onto the wall next to her and stood perfectly still until the nausea subsided, then slowly raised her head again. Her eyes had started adjusting to the darkness so she could see the vague outlines of a room, with bars surrounding the small space where she was.
She was sitting on a narrow bed attached to a stone wall and there was something heavy tugging on her wrist. She used her free hand to run her fingers over it, recognizing the object even before her eyes grew accustomed enough to see it.
