CHAPTER THREE

“What the hell are you doing here?” Uncle Rahul asked surprised. “Uncle Rahul!” I exclaimed with relief. He immediately put his arms around to assist me from the floor. “It’s a long story, but there's this whole thing with my dad and the alpha king, you know the party we’re throwing tonight was for him-” I rambled as we walked and my uncle kept nodding. “Turns out I’m his mate or whatever and there's this prophecy thing and- hey! Why’d you stop?” My uncle had stopped walking several feet behind me which I only now realised now. “Is something wrong?” I asked because he looked distant which meant he was in his head communicating with other members of his pack. “Sophie, you’re not supposed to be here.” He said looking up at me in thought. “What do you mean-” “Do you know you’re a fugitive?” He asked “A what? Oh my God, uncle Rahul I swear I didn’t do anything, that’s crazy I can’t believe he’d say I was a fugitive.” “Tell me again what you said about the alpha king, what did he say he wanted?” “Err…” I said sheepishly. “apparently I’m his mate and-” “Oh God,” I stepped back from me. “I can’t touch you.” “What? Uncle Rahul, really it’s okay, this is no biggie I just need a few days with you, I’ll go deal with him later.” I tried to reassure him but he wasn’t having it. “I’m supposed to have you captured or turned in when the announcement went out all the surrounding packs had to increase their patrols.” “You can’t be serious uncle!” I exclaimed, exasperated. “I know about the prophecy Sophie; I didn’t know it was about you!” He shouted, backing away even further. My uncle, my sweet dear uncle who had given me everything, who made sure I never shed a tear or lacked for anything was taking precautions from me. Because of the Alpha King, now I was mad. “I do not belong to anyone; I barely belong to myself.” I pleaded with him knowing I could still soften him as I did as a child. “I have nowhere to go, I’m tired and dirty, who would know? Who could find out and know you housed and fed me?” I could feel he was beginning to warm up. “Me.” A voice colder than winter pierced through the night. This time my luck was out because there was no saving grace, no ifs or maybes, it was Luke here and present in the flesh and those stark features looked even less pleased, standing out against the highlight of the moon. In a moment we’d been surrounded by his guards, with one or two in wolf forms. Despite knowing what he was capable of, he’d found me ridiculously quickly, it was still hours till morning and I should’ve at least had some more time unless somebody blabbed. "I told you I'd find you, though it didn't take long to be honest." He sighed, feigning boredom. "Well since you’re clearly jobless perhaps you should return to where you came from, there's a party waiting for you and you’ve been more than neglectful of your guests tonight." I pressed a sarcastic smile as I faced right up to him. He stepped up looming over me, searching my eyes for something and for a moment I almost retreated realising he could harm me for putting him through this inconvenience and get away with it. But he only narrowed his eyes coolly and walked away. "I don't think so, love. You’re mine and you're coming with me." He asserted firmly. It took no time to return to my house as we drove in the car and I only realised just how futile my escape attempt was which infuriated me further. As soon as we arrived back I ran straight to look for Anne leaving Luke to do whatever he wanted. From the upstairs balcony, I heard him telling my father about arrangements made for me to leave with him as if there was no way I would protest to that. I almost laughed thinking my father would never let him take me away like that but was shocked to hear his meek acceptance without so much as a protest. When I found Anne, she was acting weird and shaken up and kept moving about as though she were guilty or had done something wrong. I figured she’d been compelled to tell Luke my location which I had no intention of holding against her because even I had seen how intimidating he could be. "Pack your bags, we'll be leaving soon." He’d deadpanned to me in the car as soon as we’d arrived home. Yeah, I definitely hated him. "I need to get out of this situation, he's only been here a few hours and he's practically controlling my entire life and he expects me to leave with him tonight," I said sighing at the end. "It's dangerous Sophie, he seems like he’d kill every werewolf with your scent just to find you.” Anne sighed defeated. “Is that a joke?” I lifted my head from the bed. She looked unsure, face scrunching at the thought of that likely possibility. "I'm not just leaving that easily with him though, he's cocky and arrogant and fancies himself so hot," I said aloud, more to myself. A knock at the door shut me right up as Anne and I both exchanged looks. "You really shouldn't have said that." Anne said and I wondered if he could have heard my insults several wings and an entire floor away. I straightened my clothes and opened the door to reveal my father, looking more tired and exhausted than I’d ever seen him before. “Oh, dad.” I sighed bitterly pulling him into my arms as I shut the door behind me. "You will have to leave with him tonight." He said dejectedly. “it's not what I wanted for you but you’ll understand someday soon.” I pressed my eyes together as he spoke, feeling for the first time the painful pang of forced acceptance. My beloved father was almost in tears, asking me to even though I knew it hurt him. “Okay, dad.” “I’ve spoken to him at length. He’ll be good to you. I know he will, he doesn’t have a choice, you’re his mate. It’d be easier killing himself than hurting you.” He smiled. “Like you and mama.” I teased, to ease the soreness of the current subject and he nodded fondly. “Speak to him, give it a chance and see.” He said, probably more because he didn’t have a choice and neither did I. Destiny had decided my fate.
