CHAPTER TWO: INTO THE SHADOWS Ava arrived at the hospital that morning feeling restless. Tonight was the night. The operation against Ombra. She pushed through the hospital entrance, trying to shake off the unease. Ava walked into the staff lounge and spotted Alex, her only friend, passed out on the couch, totally wiped. She smirked. “ Someone worked herself to the bone again?” Leaning down, Ava gave Alex a gentle poke. “Hey, Sleeping Beauty, time to wake up.” “Ugh, please just leave me alone… let me sleep,” Alex mumbled, eyes barely opening. Ava grinned. “No way, sleepyhead.” Alex rubbed her face, voice hoarse from exhaustion. “I pulled a night shift at the diner, then had to do an early morning at the grocery store before coming here. Didn’t get much sleep.” Ava’s eyes widened in surprise. “Why didn’t you tell me? You could’ve handed one of those shifts over to me. I would’ve gladly covered for you.” Alex sighed, managing a small smile. “I didn’t want to be a burden.” “Burden? You’re family. You don’t have to do this alone,” Ava said softly. “You seriously need to slow down, girl, and you know my family is willing to help.” Alex smiled faintly, shaking her head. “I appreciate it, Ava, but I can’t keep leaning on you guys. I have to do this on my own.” Ava reached out, squeezing Alex’s hand. “We’re not letting you do it alone. You’re family to us. Let us help.” Alex looked up, tired but grateful. “Thanks.” Ava smiled warmly. “Anytime. Now, let’s get through today, yeah?” Alex nodded, stretching as she stood. They shared a small laugh before turning their attention back to the day ahead. Ava grabbed her medical kit and headed down the hall, her mind shifting to the patients she needed to see. One of them was Officer Daniels. She pushed open the door to Officer Daniels’ room. He was seated upright, pale, his right arm in a sling, bruises still faintly visible on his face. “Morning, Daniels,” Ava said, setting down her medical kit. “How’s the healing coming along?” Daniels offered a tired smile. “Slow and steady, but I’m getting there. Thanks for checking in.” As Ava adjusted his IV, the door creaked open. Two officers from his unit entered, nodding a quick greeting. “Hey, Daniels. How’re you holding up?” one asked. “Better,” Daniels replied with a tired smile. “Thanks for checking in.” Daniels sat up straighter, clearly eager despite his injuries. “So, what’s the latest?” he asked. One officer exchanged a glance with the other before speaking in a low tone. “There’s intel that Ombra is coming into town tonight.” Ava’s hands stilled. Ombra. Her mind flashed back to last night her father’s urgent phone call, the way he and Richard had rushed out the door. Tomorrow night, they’d said. Tonight. She kept her head down, pretending to focus on Daniels’ chart, but her ears locked onto every word. “We’ve confirmed he’ll be at Notte Nera tonight,” the second officer continued. Daniels raised an eyebrow. “That’s risky. Notte Nera isn’t just a club, it’s practically their second headquarters. Deals are signed there. Loyalties tested.you walk in there you might not walk out.” “That’s why we’re going in heavy,” the first officer said, his voice steady but edged with anticipation. “Chief Alfred’s leading the operation himself. We move at eleven.” Ava’s pulse quickened. The officers kept talking, but Ava forced herself to finish up with Daniels, careful not to linger too long. “Alright, all set,” she said, forcing a smile. “Try to get some rest, okay?” Daniels gave her a nod, but his eyes stayed fixed on his colleagues. “Stay safe out there.” Ava stepped into the hallway, her mind racing. Notte Nera. Tonight. Her father and brother were walking into danger. The day wound down with the usual shuffle of footsteps and lockers clanging shut. Ava pushed open the lounge door, letting out a soft sigh. “Finally,” she muttered. “Clock-out time.” She tossed her scrub top into her bag and pulled on a plain T-shirt. The door swung open and Alex stepped in, looking like she’d run a marathon in her scrubs. She barely made it to the bench before her phone buzzed in her pocket. One glance at the screen had her shoulders sinking. She answered, speaking in low, clipped sentences, before ending the call with a frustrated exhale. “What’s up?” Ava asked, tying her hair back into a loose ponytail. “You look like someone just told you your favorite diner burned down.” Alex flopped onto the bench. “It’s work. Notte Nera just called some last-minute event tonight, they need extra staff. But I already promised the diner I’d help cover the evening rush. Both shifts overlap, and if I ditch one, I might lose it.” Ava’s heart skipped. Notte Nera. Tonight. “I’ll take the club,” Ava said quickly. Alex blinked. “What? No, Ava, you’ve already covered so many shifts…” “Alex.” Ava’s voice was firm. “I’ll take it. You go flip pancakes or whatever. We’ll both get paid, and everybody’s happy.” Alex studied her for a moment, then sighed. “You’re the best, you know that?” “Obviously,” Ava said with a grin, but her mind was already elsewhere. She pulled out her phone and dialed Alfred. No answer. She tried Richard next. Also no answer. Her chest tightened. They were probably already preparing. With a sigh, she tapped on “Mum” and sent her text “I won’t be coming home tonight, don’t panic I’m not running away with a biker gang xoxo” Ava pocketed the phone, her mind already racing ahead. Tonight wasn’t just about covering for Alex anymore. She’d overheard enough to know something big was about to happen. This was her chance to see it for herself, to be part of the story, not just watching from the sidelines. Slipping into the staff jacket Alex had left for her, Ava tightened the straps on her bag and stepped into the cool evening air. She caught a cab and gave the driver the address. Twenty minutes later, the neon sign of Notte Nera flickered ahead, its dark glow pulsing like a heartbeat in the night. Ava took a deep breath. The club wasn’t just a workplace tonight. It was the heart of the storm she was stepping into. With determination, she pushed open the door and slipped through the employee entrance at the back, her heart pounding. People in expensive clothes and elaborate masks moved toward the entrance. Inside, the air was thick with smoke and bass-heavy music. Red lights bathed everything in shades of blood and shadow. Masks everywhere. No faces. No names. Just whispers and secrets. This wasn’t just a nightclub. This was where the underworld came alive. Ava adjusted her own mask, simple, black, covering just enough and tied on her apron. “Alex.” She turned to find the manager standing right there, arms crossed, his sharp eyes assessing her. “You’re late.” “Sorry, got held up,” Ava replied smoothly. He nodded curtly. “You’ll work the VIP section tonight. We have an important guest coming—big league. Keep your head down, follow instructions, and don’t mess up.” His eyes narrowed. “One wrong move, and it won’t just be your job on the line.” Ava swallowed. “Understood.” “Good. Get to work.” Ava was heading back to the main floor when she caught a glimpse of a familiar figure moving through the crowd. A man in a dark suit, his hand loosely holding a familiar silver bracelet. Richard?. The figure disappeared into the shadows before she could confirm. She started moving But someone grabbed her hand and pulled her sharply to the side.leading her to the hallway where the restroom is Then he reached up and slowly peeled off his mask. “Richard?” Ava blinked. He put a finger to his lips, then glanced around the small restroom, making sure they were alone. When he looked back at her, his eyes were blazing. “Ava Bliss Alfred. What the hell are you doing here?” Ava swallowed hard. “I’m just helping Alex. She needed someone to cover her shift—” “No.” Richard’s voice was sharp. “You can’t be here. Not tonight.” “Why?” “This isn’t just any night, Ava.” Richard’s jaw tightened. You need to leave. Now.” Ava hesitated, caught between the thrill that had brought her here and the genuine fear in her brother’s eyes. “Okay,” she whispered finally. “I’ll leave. But you stay safe too.” Richard’s expression softened slightly. “I will. Come on.” He adjusted his mask and reached for her arm, guiding her toward the door. They slipped back into the hallway and headed for the exit, moving quickly through the crowd. They were almost at the door when… The heavy entrance doors swung open. The entire club shifted. Conversations stopped mid-sentence. Heads turned. Even the music seemed to lower. A man stepped inside. Tall. Broad-shouldered. Dressed in black from head to toe. And he wasn’t wearing a mask. The only person in the entire club without one. Romano Alfonso. ombra. The shadow.
