Chapter.One
CHAPTER ONE: BEFORE THE STORM The Alfred household buzzed with the usual chaos, excitement, and laughter. Richard had Ava in a headlock, her medical textbook just out of reach on the coffee table. "Say it," he grinned. "Say I'm the superior Alfred sibling." "Never," Ava gasped, laughing. "I save lives. You just…arrest people…" "Just? JUST?” He held her tighter. "Richard, leave me alone!" Ava laughed, struggling but smiling. Alfred was in the kitchen sipping herbal tea from his teacup while he looked through some reports. In the hallway, Mary knelt by the coat rack, gently smoothing the edges of Alfred's polished police badge laid out carefully on the table, Richard's worn police cap, and Ava's crisp white doctor's coat. Each piece was more than just an item, it was a symbol of their family's fight against the darkness creeping into their city. "Can't let them lose their shine," Mary murmured, her voice soft but steady. Her routine was to ensure the items were in good shape for the next day. Once she was done with that, it was time to serve dinner. "Dinner's ready!" Mary called. Richard came running into the kitchen. "Finally! I'm starving." Alfred set down his teacup and rubbed his hands together, rising from the table. "Let's eat before it gets cold." Ava appeared last, folding her medical notes. "Long day ahead tomorrow," she said with a tired smile as she took her seat. They gathered around the dining table, the aroma of Mary's cooking filling the room and mingling with the familiar warmth of family. Plates were passed, and conversation sparked naturally. Ava looked up, eyes twinkling with mischief. "So, Dad, what's the latest? Got any juicy updates from the force?" Richard chuckled, shaking his head. "If you're so curious, why didn't you join the police? We could use someone like you out there." Mary shot Richard a warning glance, but he grinned and pressed on. "Seriously." Ava smirked and nudged him. "Hey, it's not too late to recruit me. I'm a real detective, just waiting for my chance." Richard laughed, shaking his head. "Funny, thought your calling was to save lives, not put people behind bars." Ava grinned and shrugged. "Yeah, I love saving people, but you know why I chose to be a police nurse? I get some action running in and saving lives." The room was filled with laughter. Alfred was chuckling softly, Mary was shaking her head with a smile, and Richard was grinning widely. The teasing lightened the mood, but it was just for a brief moment. Alfred set his fork down, his eyes losing the warmth they'd held a moment ago. "We've been tracking someone… someone no one's seen, but everyone fears. Wherever trouble breaks out, his shadow's there first." Richard's grin faded into a hard line. "He is called Ombra." "Ombra?" Ava tilted her head, interest sparking in her eyes. Alfred gave a slow nod. "Yes, it's an Italian word that means shadow. He's taking over the city piece by piece. At first, it was small gangs, but now he has taken over every notable gang in the city. They didn't even know what was happening until it was too late. One day they're running their streets, the next day they're working for him. And it's not just fear that keeps them in line… It's what happens to the ones who refuse." "The stubborn ones disappear. No one sees them taken, no one hears a struggle, they're just gone. And when their bodies turn up, it's never random. It's always somewhere public, somewhere crowded, somewhere that sends a message. People talk for days, but no one dares say his name." Richard's jaw tightened. "And now that even the big gangs are tied to him, getting to any of them is twice as hard. It's not just that they work for him, it's that he protects them. They've got better cover now than they ever had on their own. Our informants have gone quiet, and safe houses are locked down. It's like the streets themselves are closing off to us." Alfred nodded firmly. "It's like he's turned half the city into his shield. That's the kind of control we're dealing with. He doesn't need to shout or show his face. Just the thought of him is enough to make grown men give up everything they've built." Richard's voice was firm now. "Shield or not, we'll break through it. Men like him always slip up. When he does, we'll be there." Mary's gaze lingered on her son, catching the fierce determination in his eyes. A mother's pride stirred in her chest, but so did the quiet ache of fear. Their eyes met across the table, and she mouthed, "Be careful." Ava leaned forward, a spark of determination in her eyes. "If there's anything I can do…" Mary's gaze turned sharply toward her, her tone a bit stern. "What you can do right now is enjoy your dinner while it's still hot." Mary shot Alfred a sharp look across the table. "I've told you not to discuss work over dinner," her tone edged with warning. Richard laughed, leaning back in his chair. "Careful, Dad, or Mom's gonna have you camping out in the living room tonight." Alfred smirked, holding his ground. "Wouldn't be the first time." The table erupted in soft laughter. It was the kind of laughter they would have held onto a little longer if they knew how fast things were going to change. The warmth of the moment hung in the air for just a few seconds more before Alfred's phone buzzed on the table. He glanced at the screen, and his expression shifted instantly. The smile faded, replaced by something sharp and alert. "Excuse me," he said, standing up and stepping away from the table. Richard noticed immediately. His eyes followed Alfred as he moved toward the hallway, phone pressed to his ear. The conversation was low, clipped, urgent. Ava watched too, curiosity sparking. She could see the tension in her father's shoulders, the way his jaw tightened with every word. Mary's smile slipped away. She knew that look. Something was happening. A moment later, Alfred ended the call and turned back toward the table. His eyes found Richard's. "We need to go," Alfred said quietly but firmly. "Now." Richard was already on his feet. "What is it?" "Intel just came in," Alfred said, his voice low. "Ombra. We know where he'll be tomorrow.” The room went still. Ava's pulse quickened. Ombra. The Shadow. The man they'd just been talking about was now within reach. Richard grabbed his jacket from the back of his chair. "Where?" "I'll brief you on the way," Alfred said, already moving toward the door. He paused, glancing back at Mary. "Don't wait up." Mary stood, worry etched across her face. "Alfred…" "I'll be careful," he said softly, then looked at Richard. "Let's move." Richard turned to Ava and Mary, offering a quick reassuring smile. "We'll be fine. Just another night." But Ava could feel it, this wasn't just another night. They were going after the most dangerous man in the city. The door closed behind them with a heavy thud, and the house fell silent. Mary stood frozen for a moment, her hands trembling slightly as she cleared the table. Ava could see the fear her mother was trying to hide. Ava went to her room and closed the door softly behind her. She sat on her bed, replaying the scene in her mind. Ombra . They finally had something on him. Tomorrow night, they'd said. She lay back on her bed, staring at the ceiling. Sleep didn't come easy that night.
