Chapter One (Trigger warning)
It's been six months since the worst day of my life, the day I lost both my parents in a tragic car accident. Since then, my life has become a living nightmare. I now live with my aunt Clarissa and uncle Ernie, two people who I don't get along with and who aren't particularly fond of me either. One day, my aunt shouted at me to come downstairs. "MAUVE IF YOU DON'T GET DOWN HERE NOW, I WILL DRAG YOU DOWN BY YOUR HAIR!" she yelled. I reluctantly went downstairs to avoid another beating. "Get in the car, you silly girl," my aunt said through gritted teeth. We were moving to a new town several hours away from where we used to live. Great, another thing to add to my already joyful life. I thought to myself. Just a few more months, and I'll be 18 and finished with school. I can't wait to leave these assholes and start a new life somewhere else. We had been driving for what felt like forever, and I spent most of the time staring out of the window, watching the world pass me by. I envied the birds flying freely in the sky, wishing I could be as carefree as they were. As we entered the town of Hill Valley, I couldn't help but think that this was going to be another terrible place to live. We pulled up to a run-down house, and I couldn't help but express my disappointment. "What was that, you ungrateful b***h?" Ernie said with venom in his voice. "Nothing, uncle," I replied. As I got out of the car to retrieve my things, a few of them fell to the ground. As I bent down to pick them up, I felt a sharp pain in my ribs. Ernie had kicked me again, and my aunt just stood there, sniggering. As I struggled to catch my breath, I glared at my aunt and uncle, seething with resentment. They just stood there, enjoying my misery, like a pair of sadistic clowns. I quickly gathered my stuff, trying to ignore the throbbing pain in my side. "Welcome to your new home, Mauve," my aunt said, her voice dripping with sarcasm, as she gestured to the dilapidated house. I raised an eyebrow, incredulous. This dump was supposed to be my new home? It looked like it belonged in a horror movie. I trudged behind them, my eyes scanning the property. The lawn was overgrown, the windows were cracked, and the front door looked like it was about to fall off its hinges. I felt a wave of despair wash over me. This was it. This was my life now. As we stepped inside, I was hit with the stench of mildew and stale air. The interior was just as depressing as the exterior. Faded wallpaper, creaky floors, and a general sense of neglect hung in the air like a thick fog. My aunt and uncle showed me to my new room, which was essentially a glorified closet with a single bed and a broken dresser. I felt like I was being punished, like I was some kind of prisoner. I dropped my bags on the floor, feeling a sense of hopelessness wash over me. This was it. This was my life now. Trapped in this dump with these two monsters. But then, something inside me snapped. I looked around the room, taking in the peeling paint and the stained carpet. I thought about my parents, about how they would never see me again, about how I was stuck in this hellhole with these two. I felt a spark of defiance ignite within me. I was going to make the most of this situation. I was going to survive, and I was going to thrive. I was going to make them regret the day they ever took me in. Unpacking my belongings and finding places for everything in my new surroundings, I found myself sitting on my bed in a state of utter exhaustion. My body was present, but my mind was somewhere else, wandering through the labyrinth of my thoughts. The silence in the room was deafening, and the weight of my surroundings felt heavy on my shoulders. I couldn't help but feel a sense of loneliness and uncertainty about what the future held. As the hours passed, I must have dozed off, only to be awakened by the shrill sound of my alarm clock, jolting me back to reality. It was 6 AM, and a new day had begun. I stretched my limbs, cracking my neck and preparing myself for the day ahead. I knew that my uncle would still be asleep, so I tiptoed to the bathroom, brushing my teeth and gathering my thoughts. I pulled my long ash blonde hair into a messy bun, threw on a big hoodie, some ripped jeans, and a pair of timberlands. "Sorted," I said aloud, satisfied with my appearance. With a sense of determination, I dashed down the stairs, grabbed some change that I spotted on the side table, and headed out the door. I started walking up the road, following the directions to my new school. My heart was pounding in my chest, but I tried to keep a brave face. I knew that starting over would be difficult, but I was ready to take on the challenge. I had to remind myself that this was a new beginning, a chance to reinvent myself and make new connections. As I continued my journey, I couldn't help but feel a sense of apprehension about what lay ahead. I knew that the days to come would be filled with new experiences, both good and bad, but I was determined to face them head-on. I took a deep breath, put one foot in front of the other, and kept walking. Here we go again, I thought to myself, ready to tackle whatever challenges the day would bring. As I turned the corner, the school building came into view, and I felt a surge of adrenaline mixed with nerves. The imposing structure loomed before me, its brick facade seeming to whisper, "You're not in Kansas anymore, kid." I took another deep breath, pushing aside the doubts that threatened to creep in. The entrance hall was bustling with students chatting and laughing, their faces a blur as I made my way through the crowd. I spotted a group of kids gathered around a bulletin board, their eyes scanning the notices and posters. I wandered over, trying to appear nonchalant, and began to read the announcements. That's when I saw it: a flyer for the school's Track club, auditions to be held during lunch. My heart skipped a beat as I felt a spark of excitement. Track had always been my escape, my sanctuary. I ripped off a tab with the contact information and shoved it into my pocket, making a mental note to check it out. As I continued to make my way down the corridor, I could feel my nerves starting to build with each step I took. I had never been to this school before, and the unfamiliar surroundings only added to my anxiety. But I was determined to make a good impression on my first day, so I took a deep breath and pushed on. Finally, I reached the school office, a small but cozy room filled with shelves of books and papers. I approached the desk, where a kind-looking middle-aged woman sat, her glasses perched precariously on the edge of her nose. She had short brown bob and wore a floral dress that made her look somehow both professional and approachable. "Oh, hello dear," she said, looking up from her work and offering me a warm smile. "Can I help you with something?" "Yes, hi," I replied, nervously twisting my hands together. "I'm Mauve Nichols. It's my first day, and I was told to report here." "Of course, of course," the woman said, nodding sympathetically. "You just have a seat right there, and your chaperone will be with you shortly."
