Monica was merciless that night at work. As soon as she saw him, she asked him if he wanted a piece of gum. By her tone and by the way Diane shyly glanced away, Kevin knew Diane had told her what had transpired that morning before he left Diane’s.
Kevin had tried to excuse himself, but the previous night’s disclosure of the routine he followed when he got home from a night of service to her had him acting abashedly. He could tell Diane, too, had it on her mind. She rolled onto her side and propped her head up on her hand as she watched him dress. “I’m a little embarrassed knowing you’re leaving to go do that about me.”
