On the Way to Eastern Kentuky
They Decided to Move to Eastern Kentucky In Kalamazoo ,Michigan in a little white house is where the little boy ,and his family lived ,but were moving soon to Eastern Kentucky. His Dad could not find much work that really made good money, but then one day he blew his stack because, he wanted to move in a hurry . It took a while to get ready to move.He was going to take a job in the Appalachian Mountains as a coal miner. They had plans to buy a farm in Eastern Kentucky somewhere. They were going to homestead land there and, raise animals. It was June and , he had plans of traveling by wagon. He was really Mennonite Amish. His family was Amish but, are going to be Amish Mennonite . They had sold there white house for. 50,000 dollars and , packed there wagon with the things they needed. The little boy was named Stephen after his dad. His mom Stacy was packing various food in the family picnic basket and, putting other items in a box for the trip. There was a cooler in the kitchen that her mom was putting meat into for the long trip. I saw bacon and, eggs in the cooler.I saw porch chops in the cooler as well, as a ham.In the wagon there was a bag of red potatoes as well , as a few blankets, towels, and rags . we packed our clothes in trunks. Soon it was time to leave Kalamazoo. We started to finish loading the wagon. we put a few roosters and , hens into a cage and, loaded them into the wagon..Soon we were ready to go on our journey. But dad had to stop and buy some cracked corn at the feed store. They sold hay too so e bought some for us to use for the chickens. I was really.looking forward to making new friends and, seeing. new sights and , wondering where my family was going to settle down and ,live. I am only 4 years old and, mama told that I have to go to school when I am 5 I turn five in September. It will take a little while to travel there. Mom and me got in the wagon while dad got in front of the wagon and held the halters and drove our wagon We were on our way to Eastern Kentucky.Daddy told me the trip would take a while. There could be robbers on the way to eastern Kentucky.",Again we may be safe", I thought. Now i knew my dad was right in my heart. we all were on a treacherous journey to eastern Kentucky. I asked" Mom ," can I take and , hold my teddy bear?" Yes , mom said," Mom told me to take it from the trunk.," so I took my favorite teddy bear from the trunk. I wanted my teddy close to me on the wagon ride. I did hold my teddy all the way to eastern Kentucky.Mmy Teddy bear was my friend all the time . We put some food and , water for our chickens in the cage. The wagon ride was bumpy because, them horses were galloping fast Finally , we stopped to give the horses water and, too feed them. It was were we are going to camp tonight . We put our sleeping bags on the ground and dad lit a campfire. Mommy cooked dinner and of course we prayed for the food and , it was so good.Mom cooked pork chops that night. We had cornbread and, we had baked beans. It was a night to remember. We sang some songs and daddy read the Bible to us around the campfire. Soon it was time to go to bed and, I was laying there with my teddy bear looking at the moon and the stars. I was exited to go again.I was filled with wonder about eastern Kentucky and , if life would be any different in the Appalachian Mountains.I loved the fresh air ; I drifted off to sleep. Mom and dad were asleep on their sleeping bags. The fire was slowing going out. When out of the blue moon I heard a coyote howling in the distance. I didn't pay no mind to the coyote howling ,because I was asleep. In the morning we woke up and , i heard birds singing . I herd a crow calling for a kitty. It was time for breakfast and , mom was making coffee and, she fixed pancakes for. breakfast. Soon we got the plates and silverware and , syrup from a box.We all sat around the campfire to eat our pancakes for breakfast, and dad said ," Father bless this food we are going to eat and, let it be nourishing for our body. Please protect us on our journey to Eastern Kentucky,Amen" Then we all ate breakfast. Soon we were packing our stuff and , dad took care of the horses. Me and , mom packed the wagon. It was time to go so, we got into the wagon , and where on our way to our destination. Mom made bologna sandwiches to eat on the way . That was our lunch.I like food on the go. We traveled another 50 miles , and it was time to stop again. We had to feed and , water our horses and feed our chickens that were in the cage.Mom gave them some cornbread and collected their eggs.We had to eat dinner also and, rest for the night. We laid our sleeping bags down on the ground. We all went to bed , because tomorrows journey was long and, hard. We were ready to travel more. We ate breakfast ,and loaded our wagons.Dad drove the wagon again. It was time to go again. We traveled again . I enjoyed the fresh air on the way. I saw scenery that was so pretty. I fell asleep in the wagon ; the motion put me to sleep.I slept awhile. There were no bridges , so the horses had to cross creeks , rivers. Our wagon kind of floated across the water .We have crossed creeks numerous times. I knew eventually we will have to cross the big Ohio River , and I am really scared of it. Dad told me we may have to swim across it. Soon it was Sunday and, that is the Lords Day We will camp all day on Sunday so, we can rest and, worship the Lord. Dad will read the Bible, we will pray and, sing a few songs. Finally we came to a stop; it was a place by a wooded and, area Dad and ,mom took care of the horses. They fed and , watered them. There was creek were we stopped. We were in Indiana or, almost there. My mom Stacy fixed fried ham slices ,and potatoes for dinner. Mom and, dad sat there drinking coffee when out from the woods there came a man who looked very poor. He said," My name is Rodney Brian Brandon ." He sat and , talked to my dad and, mom and , they fed him some dinner. He said," Thank you and, he said," Where are you heading?" My dad said," We are heading to Eastern Kentucky so , we can purchase. a new farm and, homestead and, I have a job working as a coal miner. Rodney grinned and, spoke back. He said," That's good . Rodney said," I am oblighted to meeting up with you all.I have to go now ; I hope you have a safe trip, Well, then we packed our wagon up to head out again . I said tommy dad," dad Rodney was a nice old man." "Well , he was walking through here but, he went on his way to wherever he's going." I said to my dad," Dad we oughta be going our way too.". we placed everything back in boxes. and , the cooler and, were on our way from Indiana. to eventually Ohio. Eventually after much traveling , we will make it to Eastern Kentucky. We ended up halfway through Indiana by night fall. it was beginning to get dark. We stopped to eat and, camp for tonight.we all sat around the campfire drinking hot cocoa before going to bed.
