Chapter 8 Fareware Breakfast

1604 Words
I looked at his angry face and said the first thing that came to my frozen brain seeing him there. ”I uhm, I was out.” “You were out; where? For hours? I have been waiting here for hours and someone saw you go into a room with a veiled man.” He spat out one after the other. I sighed, thinking about Tyler’s stupidity. Now look at the trouble he has put me in with this big, grumpy, handsome man in front of me. I took a deep breath and calmly explained. “I got back to my room when we wrapped up with the wedding ritual but it felt stuffy in here. I needed some air, maybe it was the horrendously tight gown I wore so I went out for a stroll. You can ask Kiara.” I gestured to my maid. I looked at his face to see he wasn’t buying the story I was selling so I grunted with frustration as my head still ached from whatever Tyler did to me. “Why were you here in my room and waiting for hours anyway?” I grumbled. “Well, if you were a normal bride, we would be spending our wedding night together, but seeing as you seem to have lost a brain screw or two in your quest to get rid of me, I came here when I got the deets that you were seen with a veiled man,” he explained. “People talk, and they will keep talking. You shouldn’t believe everything you hear.” I retorted and from the corner of my eyes, I saw the maid visibly shrink from the hot banter taking place between me and my husband. I understood her fears. Normally, people do not talk this way to Alpha Cane and get away with it but somehow I do. “I’ve had enough of this. Get ready for the farewell breakfast in the morning. We will depart for my pack by nightfall.” He commanded and walked away without a backward glance. When he left, I released a huge burst of air, I didn’t even know I was holding. Zera’s Tyler almost got me in major trouble. I may argue with Cane and get on his nerves a time or two but everyone knows he is not one to be messed with. I turned to Kiara and said, “Alright, you heard the main man. We have to prepare for this farewell breakfast.” A few hours later, I was set to attend the breakfast ceremony. My mother, or rather, Zera’s mother, had come in a few times to check on me to see if I was ready for the event. Whenever she came in, she always had that proud look in her eyes, unlike the sad and angry look she gave Zera the previous day. I stood in front of the mirror and admired my new body. Zera was one beautiful curvy woman or rather, I am so gorgeous. I was dressed in a royal blue silk gown that fell softly on my curves. Kiara arranged my hair in loose braids, with tendrils escaping to frame my delicate face. My mother came in again and said, “It’s almost time. Are we ready here?” “Well, I am dressed up. We might as well go downstairs.” I replied and somehow knew that was a reply Zera would have given. My mother rolled her eyes and ignored my comment. “Hopefully your husband will not just fall in love with you but your smart mouth too.” She came to stand in front of me and for the first time, allowed me to see the mixed emotions racing across her face, and my eyes became teary. She held my cheeks, lovingly caressed them, and said, “You are a very interesting child, Zera.” she chuckled a bit thinking about Zera’s antics, then continued softly, “I am going to miss you so much but I have no doubt that Alpha Cane will take care of you.” She smiled at my scrunched nose and said, “Both of you may want to tear out each other’s throat now but I have no doubt that all that will change. Call it a mother’s instinct.” She hugged me tightly for a few minutes, then the mask was slipped back in place. She clapped her hands twice and said, “It’s time, everyone; let’s go for the farewell breakfast.” I followed my mother downstairs and even though she had slipped on her emotionless face card, she held my hand tightly as we made our way to our seats. The farewell breakfast was a feast, alright. The room was filled with people and the room buzzed with conversation and laughter. I saw Cane seated already, having a quiet conversation with my father, who sat on his left and an empty chair was reserved for me on his right. He glanced at me for a moment and I was sure I saw admiration in his eyes before he looked away. I shook my head and reasoned that I may just be imagining things. My mother had moved to her seat next to my father and before I could take my seat, Freya and two other ladies approached me. I groaned mentally and wondered what she wanted this time. “Mmm, enjoying the title of Luna too much, already, I see,” she said with an icy smile on her face for whoever cared to watch us. “Don’t enjoy it too much. Who knows? you may not last there when Alpha Cane sees the incompetent limbo he married,” she spat with a fake smile and turned to walk away. I sighed, already bored out of my mind listening to her talk. I already had too many problems on my own as it stands. I moved to my seat and engaged in different conversations with people. Cane talked to me a time or two with a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes but after that, he focused on the conversation around the table as if he had to hear every single detail. I saw Freya watching us and wondered what exactly her problem was. I looked around the table and realized that I actually do not know anyone smiling and laughing with me here, and in a few hours, I will be moving to a pack where I know no one and nobody knows me. Even my parents here were not my real parents. I miss my dad. I became overwhelmed with emotions and gave an incomprehensible excuse, I needed some space and fresh air. I had not taken more than three steps towards the door when I felt cold liquid pour down my blouse and I saw one of the ladies who was with Freya earlier frantically turn and kneel down while saying repeatedly, “I am sorry, Luna Zera, it was an accident.” I knew it was no accident. I searched the quiet crowd to see Freya smirking in a corner. I looked at the circus performer, who was still going about frantically on the floor, then walked towards the stairs and raced up my room, with Kiara following quickly at my heels. “I am so sorry, my lady,” she said to me sympathetically. “I am glad Alpha has called her to order already.” I turned towards her and said, “Really?” “Yes ma’am. He said he wouldn’t have anyone disrespect his bride that way, even if it was a mistake. You should see her cower in fear.” Kiara explained, obviously enjoying giving me the details of what had been done to Freya’s minion, who poured wine on my dress. I thought about it for a few seconds and said nonchalantly, “Mmm, nice.” I started for my room, deep in thought. Freya is overstepping and she thinks I am a weak Luna that she can toy with just because she fooled Zera with the poison. She was supposed to give Zera sleeping lotion on the day of the wedding but instead, she gave her actual poison and that was how Zera’s soul waned and I took over. If I hadn’t taken over, then Freya would have killed Zera for good and gotten away with it because everyone would blame Zera for committing suicide in order not to marry Alpha Cane. I am not the weak Penelope anymore, no. I also will never fall victim to anybody’s wicked trickery. Freya must be taught a lesson or two and she needs to take the classes as soon as possible. I took off my clothes and stood naked in the middle of my room because the wine soaked deep into my chemise. "Kiara, go to my wardrobe and lay out another gown on my bed.” “I still have wine on me so I will quickly wash up in the tub; there’s still water left from the morning.” I went to the bathroom and quickly rinsed out the remaining wine from my body. I proceeded to loosen my braids and poured water on my hair. I walked out of the bathroom to my room, still naked, with water dripping from my hair down my body. “Kiara, I’d really appreciate you getting berries for...” The words stopped short in my mouth and I gasped loudly because right there in the middle of my room was Alpha Cane himself, staring at me in all my wet, naked glory.
