Rowena’s Pov
“Tighten the border’s security. Henceforth, no one from another pack should be allowed to set his or her foot in my pack without my damn permission!” Alexander set up a meeting late in the night, and ordered all his men, caring less that the time was far gone.
“You think that will work?” Immediately the meeting ended, I left where I had been standing and rushed after him from behind. “He’s—quite powerful. He could slip in from anywhere possible, Xander.”
To me, it was like time was already running out. I don’t want to try keeping calm. No, all I wanted was an immediate solution. I don’t want Sébastien taking my kids away from me. Because certainly, that jerk is up to no good.
“Wait a second, Rowena.” The Alpha suddenly stopped, facing me with so much darkness in his eyes. “Why does he think he has any right to you or the kids now? He had a memory loss and forgot the hell he made you pass through or what?” His nose flared.
He’s just as angry as I am, maybe even worse. And suddenly, I knew… no one hates Sébastien more than he does.
Although he’s never seen him before, he’s hated his gut ever since I told him everything about my rejection, being sold away by the same man that had confessed his love to me first, all with his babies inside me.
“He’s regretting, wishing he could have done better when he had me but it’s late. He’s now my thrash, I’ll do everything to keep him away from both me and my kids. But…” I didn’t realize I was crying until tears slipped out of my eyes, and down on my shirt. “I…I also want you to protect us, Alexander. I’d be lying if I said I’m not scared.” I pleaded with a cracked voice.
“Hush, c’mon don't cry.” He pulled me to his chest. “I will protect you, okay? Never will I let him near you or your children. Not under my watch, Rowena.” He assured, his voice a low possessive growl.
His other hand slid up my back, and onto my head, patting my hair as I sobbed. I wished I could stop, take his words for it— after all, he’d been the one keeping us safe all these years— but damn, I’d be lying if I denied fear wasn’t creeping in my chest still.
He didn’t urge me to stop weeping any further than he already had. He allowed me to stay that way, each pat on my head slow and reassuring in a way I didn’t expect. Until I finally dared to suck the rest of whatever little was left of my tears in, and stepped back, lifting my eyes to meet his.
Alexander's gaze locked onto mine, hot and unreadable. I tilted my mouth slightly, forcing out an ‘I’m okay now’ smile but he stepped forward nevertheless. He reached for my hands, tracing soft circles at the back with his thumb. A surge of calmness and warmth ran through me.
“Should I show you?” He asked under his breath, observing my expression and my brow lifted slightly, my curiosity piqued.
Show me what?
“That not even an anthill can’t find its way inside my pack’s border without my permission?” He said at last, his eyes narrowing. There was something in how he spoke that sent tiny shivers crawling all the way down to my spine.
I hesitated, looking everywhere but him as I began to ponder,
I could use this opportunity to get a breather for the last time because I’m not sure when I’d be stepping outside after this. It’s the safest indoor, the outside world is dangerous and hardly could be trusted. I needed to be in here, looking out for my kids and making sure they are safe.
My head turned towards him and I nodded, signaling a yes. His eyes dilated in surprise for a few seconds, as though he’d concluded I wasn’t going to agree, before they were gone. Something else flickered in his eyes. Satisfaction? Before I could decipher what it was, he locked his hand firmly around my wrist.
“Let’s get to it then.” He said simply, leading me off. I firmly believed I wasn’t going to look at our joined hands, because I didn’t want to think deep into such a small detail, but I found it hard to restrain myself.
His veiny hand swallowed mine, the size difference making mine look even smaller. He held it tightly, like it might slip if loose even for a bit. The two of us walked until we reached the parking lot, where he opened the passenger door for me, then moved around to take the driver’s seat.
It had been so long since anyone treated me this kindly. “Thank you.” I muttered, my lips inching up into a small smile as I looked at him. He just shrugged, his way to tell me it was no big deal and the ride began.
This was my first time being in his car. I’d always driven to and fro in mine, but now that I get to experience it, I was amazed by how cozy and relaxed it made me.
I snuck a peek at him, before leaning back and reclining the seat like I owned the owner. I won’t lie, this was just a drive but I was over the moon. I could easily fall asleep in this position, that is if Alexander wouldn’t mind. I haven’t had a proper rest in a while. Precisely since Sebastien decided to remind me of his existence.
“Would you like me to turn the music up?” He asked, glancing at me, probably wondering why I’d gone so quiet.
“I won’t mind either way. How long until we reach the border?” I asked causally, my eyes closed. It wasn’t like I had a choice in it. No music would be far more relaxing but I didn’t know what his comfort zone was, so I tried to be considerate. Still, to my dismay, the silence remained. He didn’t turn it on, and I was truly grateful. I honestly couldn’t figure out how he always made the right calls.
“Thirty minutes, maybe.” He replied and I managed a faint smile.
“Perfect,” I murmured heartily and with relief. “I think I could actually use a good sleep before then.” But even so, no amount of sleep could wash out my worries. That reminder didn't fail to ring in my head, over and over again.
