Sébastien’s Pov
“Wait Alpha, let me get this straight. S—she truly sent you away?” The disbelief was plain on my Beta’s face.
I wasn’t in the right state of mind after that conversation with Rowena, and it’s a miracle that I managed to arrive home without getting into an accident.
Different thoughts weighing in my mind, I knew I had to confide in someone and except that Jason was at arms length, he was the only one that I could trust now.
Although after laying everything out before him, he looked more bewildered than expected and I understood why. Rowena was the tender, caring and soft spoken kind of woman. While she was with me, she obeyed and listened to every one of my commands. Even when she had rather make her own choice, she would agree to my opinion without any questions or hesitations
But today, that woman I knew was gone. Today, she didn’t only go head-to-head with me, but raised her voice on me for the first time.
I knew it was what I deserved, and she had no reason to be nice to me after treating her unfairly then, but it was painful.
Back there, while standing in front of her, a part of me wished she’d have a tiny bit of mercy on me. Or even better if she loses all memory of our pasts. Maybe then, we would be able to start afresh.
Something I knew was impossible.
I nodded. “Not only that, she didn’t allow my kids to see me. I found out there and then she never told them I was their father. You know how much that hurts?” I tried to keep my face blank, and the tears swelling up in my eyes at bay as I raised a brow at him.
Jason sighed, drawing out a chair at my desk and taking his seat.
“I feel she’s still carrying the wound of what happened four years ago. It’s not exactly easy for her to bring up two kids all by herself. You sold her off, you didn’t want the children either. I’m sorry, Alpha but it’s only right she hates you now.” He said, and my jaw ticked angrily, despite knowing fully well he was spouting nothing but facts.
“You think I don’t have my regrets now?” I glared at him, the intensity hot enough to burn a hole through his skull. “I left the only woman who loved me more than herself, all for a gold digger that took an advantage of me. It’s only right that I regret the day I made that decision. However, the thing we should be thinking about now is a solution,” I told him. “I can’t continue living like this, Jason.”
I needed my mate back.
I was willing to do whatever it takes to convince her. But the question is, what exactly would that be?
She made it loud and clear she wanted nothing from me, and from the sound of it, she must have accomplished a lot. She was no longer the woman relying heavily on me. Now, she was well made, and a well known Luna far and wide.
What could I possibly offer someone like that, that would change her mind? What do I have, that I could give her and she’d leave everything I did to wrong her behind her like it never happened? Nothing.
“I have an idea.” Jason who looked deep in thought for a minute said all of sudden and my attention immediately shifted to him.
I leaned forward with interest. “Which is?” I asked expectantly, my voice lowered.
“What about you try to get close to the kids first?” He finally spoke up and my excitement died that very minute.
“No way,” I snapped, slumping back against my seat. “She forbade me from reaching out to them and she might probably behead me if she sees me even a feet close to them.” I told him, my teeth grounded in frustration.
We might have two children together but it’s completely useless to try and use them to win Rowena over, when I’m sure she was going to make sure I never get to see them again. Until the day I take my last breathe.
“Well deserved.” I heard him mumble to himself, loud enough for me to hear and I slammed my fist against the table.
“What?! What did you just say?” I questioned, standing up swiftly and I hated that I couldn’t maintain my balance in front of him at a moment like this.
In a bid to clear my head of any thought pertaining to Rowena, I drank a lot more than I could take. It didn’t work and now, my skin coursed with deep regret.
“Me? No, I didn’t say anything, Alpha.” Although he knew he'd been caught red handedly, Jason still shook his head in denial. I could see he was inching to stand up and put some distance behind us, but I was towering over him. He’s got no escape from my wrath.
“You did and I need you to repeat what you just said again to my face.” My eyes darkened in warning.
I shouldn’t be offended by his statement since it was the truth, but I didn’t need to hear it from him. Because I was fully aware not having even one supporter on my side meant that I was completely screwed.
“Fine,” He gave in, holding my gaze. “I said it was the treatment you deserved. Meaning, you’re simply getting a taste of your own medicine, Alpha Sébastien.”
I winched at the harsh truth that burst out of his mouth. But I didn’t touch him like I threatened to.
I retreated, falling back into my seat with a loud helpless groan escaping my throat. Longing to push the ache in my chest far behind me, I threw my head back and closed my eyes, the silence comforting.
But only for a while. The sound of my phone ringing cuts through the air, followed by Jason’s voice.
“Sir, it’s… your mother.”
I shook my head, signaling him to place the phone back down. The call stopped, only for a second before it rang again. Again, and then again.
“Hand me the phone.” I raised my head, my palm outstretched as I sat up.
I’d had enough, and noise was the last thing I could take.
Once he gave it to me, and the phone was against my ear, I growled into the phone, not allowing her a word. “What is it that you want from me this tim…”
I wasn’t allowed to finish before she filled my ears with an unexpected bombshell, stilling me.
