SEVENTEEN

Sébastien’s Pov “What?!” I almost cursed. “Are you toying with me right now, mother?” My grip on the phone tightened as I waited for her to repeat herself. “Does it look like I am?” She responded, and I could imagine her rolling her eyes. “You have to come over as soon as you can and meet her. I’m not taking no for an answer.” At that, I couldn’t help but scoff. I didn’t know she knew how to pull expense pranks like this. “I don’t know what you’re saying and I don’t care to. If you’re done acting, call me back because I’m hanging up right now.” I said angrily, prepared to hit the red button when her voice came up less than a second later. “I heard about what happened. Olivia didn’t only cheat on you but left you right after. As much as I want to remind you that I had warned you about her, the deed is already done. The only thing left now is for you to keep the pack from crumbling and to do that, you need a new woman,” She muttered quickly, her voice a desperate plea. “Her name is Ivy, and I’m sure you’re going to love her.” Sensing the seriousness in her voice, my heart thudded, and I found myself blankly staring straight ahead. As much as I understood the vacant Luna seat demand for an urgent substitute before the pack is infiltrated, I see no reason why my mother should get involved. No one is trustworthy enough, not even the Ivy she kept on praising. They all leave eventually, after getting what they wanted from me and I couldn’t allow the same mistake to repeat itself again. The only person I could trust again was Rowena. I don’t care what happens, I don’t want any other woman aside from her. “I am going to find a woman by myself. So don’t get the poor girl’s hope high, and let her go. Whatever further plan you may have, you should also throw it out. I’m going to handle this on my own, so please… just watch, mother.” She wanted to interrupt me, but I didn’t give her the chance. As soon as I was done speaking, I hung up and placed the phone back down. I buried my face in my palms for a second. Goodness. What was that just now? “What are you going to do now?” Jason voiced, his brows furrowed. “Isn’t it obvious?” I couldn’t imagine myself getting involved with another woman after the hell Olivia showed me. “If I want a woman, I would get one by myself. I don’t think I need my mother’s involvement in this. After all, I’m the only one who knows what I want.” He nodded. After a while he stood up to leave, and that was when I raised a finger, stopping him. “Get me a drink first.” I told him. Maybe if I drank, my mind would clear itself and I’d be able to think of a solution through all this mess. ~~ I sighed as yet another reminder letter came from my mother. I haven’t been picking her calls, but she’s been making sure I didn’t catch a break, even if it’s through sending me letters in which I don’t bother to read them anymore. After all, the contents are always the same thing. I have a pile of them in my drawer, and there are so many a few are starting to stick out. Out of frustration, I woke up one day and decided to put a stop to her tantrums. Even if that meant paying her a visit. “I gave you an answer already. I told you I was going to handle the situation. For how long will you continue to do this, mother?” The stern expression on my face remained there as I watched her serve me a cup of coffee. I didn’t want it. She was doing this to stall, and I wasn’t in for it. “For as long as you keep rejecting my idea,” She said, taking her seat beside me on the couch. “When your father handed over the pack to you, he did it with the belief you would grow it to be more than it already was. He didn’t do so for you to let it perish, Sébestien. You have to put someone in that vacant spot and it should be immediately.” She continued with seriousness, her arms folded over her chest. It was as if she was already rehearsing in her head the perfect words to counter whatever I would say next. “I will. That’s why I want you to just wait and see what happens. I already have someone in mind.” Frustration could be sensed in my voice. “Who? Your ex?” My mother laughed, as though the idea couldn’t be more absurd. “I heard about what you’re up to. Hasn’t she already moved on? You think she’d want to get back together with you after all that happened, huh?” “I’m not sure about that, but there’s no harm trying,” I shrugged nonchalantly. Just before something clicked into place in my head, and I found myself shifting closer to her. “Also, if you knew about everything, then you must know she has your grandchildren too. Don’t you, by any chance, want to claim them?” I asked, my breath pausing as I waited for her answer. She fell silent, her eyes roaming my face in deep thought. The silence between us stretched, and it took minutes before it snapped. “I didn’t care about them then. Don’t you think it would be pretty embarrassing and a shame doing so now?” She snapped, rising up swiftly, and I could see it. Although she wouldn’t admit it, the mention of her grandchildren got into her head. If only she would drop this marriage case and allow me to go after the woman my heart wants. “Fine, I accept you don’t want them,” I stood up as well, the rage clear in my eyes. “But know this, I do. And I’ll do everything to win them back so stop forcing that woman on me. See you next time, mother.” With that said, I left her home and drove back to my pack, my heart pounding with unease. The only way I can get through this is if I have you. Rowena, please, forgive my past foolishness and come back to me. It wouldn’t be this hard if I hadn’t lost you.
