Chapter 1
Pant, pant.... The sound of running footsteps echoed through the dark alley—the thick, metallic stench of blood flooding his senses. Kraahhhhhh.. Grooowwwllll.. He kept running, cold sweat dripping down his forehead. Every step he took sent soft splashes through rain‑soaked puddles, the sound amplifying strangely beneath the shadowed sky. Kraaahhhh... There were more of them now—running, crawling, groaning from every side. The noise drew closer and closer, but he pushed his body harder, never daring to glance back and absolutely refusing to stop. He began to feel exhaustion setting in as his legs grew numb, yet he pushed harder—until there was nowhere left to run. Then, as he rounded the corner, a hand shot out and seized him by the shoulder, slamming him down hard against the rain‑soaked ground. He groaned, completely caught off guard, as he struggled against the ravenous creature lunging on top of him. Its teeth were bared and claws swiped to tear into him; his body was growing heavier and more unresponsive—he could no longer fight back, and the sounds of the horde were drawing ever closer. He accepted this was the end, and squeezed his eyes shut.
Swing—Crack… Thud…
He waited for the bite to come, but instead only heard the heavy impact beside him.
“Are you done playing dead?” a cold voice cut through the noise.
He opened his eyes to see a tall, striking man standing over him: sleek jet‑black hair swept back, sharp defined features, a strong jawline, and piercing cool eyes. He wore a fitted black shirt beneath a hoodie, black pants, sturdy black boots, and leather gloves, with a blood‑drenched machete held firmly in his grip.
".....according to the Government..they are currently trying to assist and find out....what happened at the facility lab after its explosion..."
Sunlight flooded through the open window, blinding Asher the moment he opened his eyes. He groaned sleepily, still half‑dazed, as he rolled over in bed. His room was as shabby as ever—littered with empty beer cans and bottles, discarded instant noodle cups, unwashed laundry draped over the sofa, and a remote control lying forgotten on the dusty floor. The television droned on with morning news about recent events, but Asher paid it no mind as he stood, wearing nothing but his lip‑design boxers and an oversized shirt hanging loosely over his slim frame.
He walked toward the kitchen, opened his fridge, and grabbed a bottle of water, chugging it down. In the background, the familiar shouting of his arguing neighbors echoed through the walls—nothing new. He ignored the noise, tossed the empty bottle into an overflowing trash can, and headed for the bathroom. After showering, he dressed casually in black sweatpants, a red printed tee, and simple sneakers. He stepped out of his apartment, pulling the door shut behind him, and started down the stairs—just as another loud crash and fresh round of shouts erupted from next door. Tired of the constant drama, Asher stuffed both hands into his pockets and kept walking.
Outside, the city bustled as usual, though to Asher, it felt nothing but irritating; nothing ever really changed. He turned away from the crowds, heading toward a quiet, secluded alleyway instead. Pulling out his phone, he scrolled through headlines as he walked—news of the lab explosion was everywhere, with wild claims of negligence and dangerous experiments. Asher scoffed and muttered under his breath.
"Yeah... government and researchers these days are crazy.. all they do is waste money on nothing and blow things up.." With a huff, he shoved his phone back into his pocket.
Meanwhile, on a quiet street nearby, a man stumbled forward, blood dripping from a torn, peeling neck. "Help... me..... someone....." His voice was hoarse and weak. Suddenly, a twisted, blood‑covered figure with pale white eyes and long, sharp claws lunged from behind, biting deep into his neck and silencing his scream. The creature fed briefly before pulling back, blood dripping from its jaws, then stood unsteadily—bones cracking with every movement. The victim on the ground convulsed, limbs twisting at unnatural angles, until his eyes rolled pale white and his body began to change. Moments later, the thing that had once been a man stood up, groaning and deformed—Kraaahhhh—before running into an alley and leaving a trail of blood behind.
Asher passed by that street shortly after the creature had already fled. All Asher noticed was the trail of blood heading straight toward the main city. He frowned in confusion before he crouched down to the asphalt to inspect it, touching the wet red stain with his finger. "It’s fresh... did something happen here just now?" He murmured to himself before standing up, following the trail while already pulling out his phone to call the police. But as he dialed, a shadow suddenly swept past behind him; he spun around immediately, but saw nothing. Still, he could tell someone had just run past. He turned back again, pressing the phone to his ear, but the line only rang endlessly. He tried again with the same result—now deeply confused, he pulled up the news feed once more.
"....a new explosion occurred near the police station around 9:00 a.m.; no one is believed to have survived... but there is more disturbing news... a famous celebrity was lunged at by one of her fans who began biting and tearing at her skin.....the entire incident was captured on live camera...." Asher watched the footage on his screen: the woman attacking the celebrity, biting savagely, twisting with pale white eyes. Onlookers panicked and fled as the attacker rose and began assaulting others. The celebrity herself convulsed, blood spilling from her mouth, before standing up and turning on her own bodyguard and manager; the live feed dissolved into chaos as people ran for their lives.
Beeepppp!! Beeepppp!!

Asher froze as the alert blared, his phone repeatedly beeping with the same notification. He scanned the now empty street around him; it was eerily quiet, save for the persistent alarm. He pocketed the device and began walking briskly back toward his building. Nearing his apartment and climbing the stairs, his steps faltered—his neighbor’s door hung slightly ajar, stained at the edge with fresh blood. It looked jammed, as if battered and forced open from outside.
He moved slowly toward it, his heart hammering harder with every step. Reaching out, he pushed the door slightly and peeked inside. The sight nearly made him gag—blood everywhere, human gore, furniture shattered and overturned, and what looked like torn flesh from someone who had been flayed alive only minutes before. The room was a slaughterhouse; he dared not enter, his body rooted to the spot in frozen horror.
Crashh!! Kraahhhh!!
Asher snapped back to reality at the sound of shattering wood and shuffling, inhuman noises. He stepped back unsteadily, his legs trembling, and accidentally kicked a broken floor mop handle behind him. The infected emerged from one of the rooms: her shoulder torn, one leg twisted grotesquely, stumbling forward, groaning, blood dripping from pale lips and pale white eyes. Asher reeled back in horror—he recognized Mrs. Tam from next door. Her skin had turned a sickly blue‑pale, dark green veins snaking up her neck, her head jerking and body twisting as if mid‑transformation. He backed slowly away, relieved she hadn’t spotted him yet, then turned and bolted for his own door. He heard her guttural cries and uneven gait behind him, but fumbled his lock open, slipped inside, and slammed it shut, bolting it fast before leaning back, gasping for air.
"What is happening? Where did they come from? How...." He panted, sliding down the door to sit on the floor, trying to process everything he’d seen. He remained there a moment, catching his breath, before pulling out his phone again. His chats were flooded—friends asking the same panicked questions. He skipped past the messages to the news, where viral videos from across the city were popping up: identical scenes of sudden violence, biting, unprovoked attacks. Asher knew it wasn’t just mass hysteria—not after seeing Mrs. Tam. This was something far worse. Something not human. And clearly connected to the lab explosion.
He scrolled further to a breaking update:
"...the government confirms a massive outbreak following the incident. Investigators believe a dangerous chemical gas leak from the facility is the cause.... anyone inhaling or coming into contact with the toxin displays severe symptoms: skin turning pale blue, green vascular discoloration rising up the neck, eyes turning pale white, teeth and nails sharpening, and unnatural physical strength and speed. Transmission occurs via bites or contact with infected blood in open wounds, eyes, or mouth....."
Asher slumped heavily against the door, staring up at his ceiling. Outbreak.... infected.... aggressive.... Is this real? Is this really happening?
After gathering himself, he stood and moved to the window, pulling back the curtain just enough to peek out. Plumes of smoke rose in the distance; sirens and screams drifted up from the streets below. Total chaos. It wouldn’t be long before the gas spread or every last person was either bitten or torn apart.
From his vantage point, he watched the city unravel: people fleeing from their loved ones turned violent creature, cars abandoned and wrecked, fresh infected rising everywhere.
~Back to Present~
He glanced to his side and saw the creature lying motionless, its severed head resting in the puddle, mixing with rain and the thick scent of iron. He looked up at the man standing over him, then pushed himself up, wincing as pain shot through his limbs. Once upright, he realized how imposing the stranger was—broad, tall, and built like a wall. Caught staring, Asher cleared his throat and tried to sound casual, despite the adrenaline and ache.
"Ahem.... so... thanks... I’m Asher." He extended a hand.
The man looked him over—scrutinizing, analyzing, not just greeting. Asher shifted uncomfortably under that intense, unreadable gaze, but held his ground. He’s handsome, but gives off such a strange vibe... why is he looking at me like that?
Finally, the man met his eyes again, expression unreadable.
"...Blaise... and next time, don’t trust strangers so easily." He ignored the offered hand, turned, sheathed his machete, and began walking away.
Asher stood stunned a moment before muttering under his breath, "That guy... who does he think he is? Tsk. Handsome, sure—but a total jackass." He pulled his hand back with a huff, then hurried to follow. He didn’t particularly want to, but sticking with the man who’d just saved him was infinitely safer than being alone in a collapsing world.
"Hey, wait up! Blaise, right? Well, since you saved me, I figure I can trust you... for now. Besides.... having someone at your side isn’t exactly a bad thing these days, you know?" He nudged Blaise’s shoulder gently as he fell into step beside him.
Blaise didn’t reply, but neither did he push him away. Asher took the cue, grinning as he kept pace.
"So... where are we going?" Asher asked, glancing warily around—groans echoed nearby, but for the moment, they remained undetected.
When Blaise stayed silent, Asher sighed softly. "Well, at least I’m glad to see someone else alive... even if you’re a man of few words." He added with a small smirk.
Blaise kept walking, but the tension in his shoulders was obvious—and Asher’s smirk only widened. He found himself strangely drawn to Blaise’s quiet, mysterious demeanor. As they moved, Blaise led him down a narrower, quieter alley that felt unsettlingly still. Asher opened his mouth to speak, but Blaise held up a hand to stop him, then signaled to follow closely. He guided Asher to the back door of a diner. Silencing him with a sharp look, Blaise turned the knob slowly and peeked inside, scanning the room for threats. Once satisfied it was clear, he motioned Asher in first, then slipped in behind him and locked the door securely. He dropped his heavy pack onto a nearby sofa.
Asher looked around, impressed. "I never even noticed this place was here... kind of amazing. So... how did you know about this place here because you look like from some wealthy family you know." He watched Blaise settle into the space with easy, practiced confidence, leaning back in his chair with a knowing smile.
Blaise didn’t answer, moving instead to the bar to search through cabinets and drawers for supplies. Asher just watched, studying the way he moved—assured, guarded, and completely in control.
Outside, the world stayed quiet, though distant shuffles and footsteps lingered in the dark. The night felt endless, and Asher suddenly felt the crushing weight of exhaustion finally catch up with him. Blaise noticed his weariness without turning around.
"You can rest. I’ll check the rest of the building and look for supplies. But you need to sleep—you’re exhausted." His tone was still flat, unreadable, but not unkind.
Asher couldn’t help a small, teasing smile. Blaise clicked his tongue and moved toward the staff area to let him settle. Asher sank into the booth, finally relaxing, and drifted off quickly—safe for the first time in days, sheltered in the quiet dark with a stranger who had saved his life.
