Libby's beginning
eighteen years previous
"F*ck..." the word echoed through the minds of the attacking pack as a lone female ran with a tiny bundle in her arms.
The roars of the warriors defending the small vacation home echoed loudly. the moon was at its height, huge yellow and surrounded by stars in the clear sky.
The attackers finally gave up, leaving the dead and the mad behind. some of the wolves mates had perished, leaving the living insane with the loss of their other half. a shrieking howl rang out as the mother made the discovery that one of her pups was gone...
fourteen years later
Libbys POV
Tomorrow is my birthday, I am so excited. I get my wolf tomorrow... if I'm lucky. my whole life has been working towards this moment. Training and home schooling to get ahead of the human children so that I can be a nurse in four years.
I start college in three weeks as a fourteen year old and will be attending advanced classes with a wolf teacher and several other rogues. We were banding together and trying to get the king to approve of us as a pack living in the outskirts of Detroit near a small 400 acre forest that we used to run and chase the moon.
It was after midnight when I heard a knocking sound. I sat bolt upright in bed as the sound continued. "S*it... what in the world?" I hurry to the door of my room and swing it open... nothing. What was going on? Why was there knocking so loud and Mum and Dad didn't... a howl sounded before a voice in my head spoke up. "Libby, It's me! Let me in!"
I almost fainted, my wolf woke me from a dead sleep because she was impatient and didnt want to wait for me to wake up in the morning. I imagined swinging a door in my mind open and she dashed in. Snow white with bright blue eyes she had a black tip on her tail. she didnt match my mouse brown hair or my light grey eyes.
She sat on her haunches and howled, causing me to roll my eyes at her dramatics as I went back to bed. "what's your name?" I asked in my head.
"Marie," she replied as she rolled over revealing her tummy with a star in black fur on her stomach.
She was beautiful and perfect for me as she leaned forward in my mind looking into my vanity, causing my eyes to shift from grey to blue as she got a look at us in our mirror. "We're hot!" she exclaimed.
My giggles woke Mum and she came to my door, peeking in. "Elizabeth, what are you doing up so late?" she was exasperated with me as I was a night owl.
"Marie woke me up. She was too impatient to wait, mum." I told her.
Mum's dirty blonde hair was braided over her shoulder as her bright blue eyes smiled to me. She sat at the vanity and listened while I told her how Marie had woke me up.
present day
Libbys POV
Its graduation day! I told Marie excitedly as I dressed in a nurse's uniform and pulled my hair up into a high bun to put the nurse's cap over it.
"I am just as excited, Libby. We start work at the hospital tomorrow. No more handing out drugs at the health department to people with STDS." Marie was disgusted with the thought of venereal diseases and she was ready to start our Emergency room rotation.
I burst out laughing and smeared my wing liner. Shaking my head, I used a tissue to wipe it away and start over. Once my makeup was done in a light hand with my eyes lined, I applied my mauve lipstick and leaned back to turn my face from side to side checking out my makeup and setting everything down.
"Marie, maybe we should go for a run tonight... we wont have time for the next four days. What do you think?"
"I would love to!" she exclaimed, excited to stretch her legs and chase squirrels or rabbits.
I smile at her and she makes kissy faces before settling in the back of my mind with her head on her paws.
I took my Toyota Camry to the college and my graduation, my mum and dad attended, cheering for me as I walked across the stage and got my diploma and pin.
4 hours later
Marie and I were running through the forest when an amazing scent hit our nose. She put her head up, spinning in a circle and sniffing the air as she squirmed. The scent was of the forest with a hint of vanilla. We raced towards the scent, crushing the earth and passing the game as we tried to find the owner. Her tail was wagging in a helicopter motion as I tried to stop her. "Mate! He is here! "
As we reached the road, the scent disappeared to be replaced with the acrid scent of car exhaust. Marie sat on her haunches and howled, the longing and pain within her howl caused the others to answer the howl from different locations in the forest. He was gone...
We slumped and slowly went home, gone was the cheerful and playful moments that we had running through the forest at top speed and sniffing the scents of animals and other wolves. We made our slow way home and once we got there, I threw on the maxi dress I had left hanging from a tree and slumped inside. "Mum!" I cried out forlornly.
She came running at the pain in my voice and Marie howled in sadness as I broke down weeping. I haltingly explained to her what had happened as she led me to the cozy living room and sat us down on the sofa.
Dad was pacing and pulling at his black hair as he growled now and then. He blurted out. "Its for the best... she is too young."
Mum snorted and glared at him. "We mated on my eighteenth birthday, if you recall."
He growled again. "That was different!" he insisted.
A moment later Amos surfaced turning Dad's eyes from green to brown and said. "She is of age, David."
"Shut up, Amos!" Dad shouted, causing us to laugh softly.
Mum smiled at me. "Go take a long bath, it will soothe Marie and yourself. I'll order pizza tonight since you work tomorrow."
I nodded and slouched up the stairs, stopping to look at the image of my grandmother, smiling with my mother in her arms. I looked like my granny, with her grey eyes and luxurious brown hair.
I sighed, heading to my bathroom to run a hot bath before stripping down and examining a scratch on my thigh, Marie was healing it but we must have gotten it when we dashed through a thorny rose bush chasing the scent of our mate.
By the time the bath water turned cold, Mum called up that the pizza had arrived and I drained the tub and took a shower to wash off.
I was beginning to feel better as Marie tried making plans to run every night until we found the owner of the vanilla scented forest before the week was up. I giggled at her determined tone as I skipped down the steps to enjoy the scent of extra meat pizza and my tummy growled.
After a dinner in front of the tv watching The Notebook, which my Dad hated. He groaned while we sobbed at the emotional scenes. After the movie, I headed to bed and curled up with a sad sigh. "Soon, Marie..." I mumbled before I slowly drifted off.
