The Bond and the Break
Evangeline
I have always known the cold sting of being unwanted.
The packhouse kitchen still smells of burnt toast and bleach, reminders that Omegas like me scrub floors while Alphas choose mates worthy of silk and crowns.
Tonight I stand barefoot at the edge of Bloodhaven territory, cloak pulled tight against the frost. My wolf, Ember, paces inside me, restless and furious.
He’s close. Her voice is a whisper through the mind link I share only with her. Our mate is here.
I want to laugh at the irony. After nineteen years of being nothing, fate finally decided to throw me a bone — or rather, a bond.
A rustle in the underbrush makes me turn. My heart stumbles when the trees part and he appears.
Alpha Aiden Thorn.
He’s taller than the stories. Broader. Shadows coil around him like loyal guards. His scent, pine and petrichor, hits me so hard my knees weaken.
His wolf, Ash, growls low in my mind, Mate.
I should bow. Beg. Cry. That’s what Omegas do when the Moon Goddess gives them an Alpha for a mate.
Instead, I straightened my spine. Not this time.
Aiden stalks closer. His eyes, storm gray, flicker as they drink me in.
“Evangeline Hart,” he says my name like it is ash on his tongue. “The Goddess must be laughing.”
I felt the bond snap tight between us, a golden chain searing my bones.
“Yes,” I whisper. “The joke’s on both of us, Alpha.”
His lips curled into something cruel and beautiful. “You’re an Omega. Filthy. Weak. No Luna of mine.”
The words cut deeper than any blade. My wolf howls — hurt, betrayed — but I force the bond’s heat down until it becomes ice.
“Then say it,” I dare him. “Break it.”
His jaw clenches. He steps closer. I feel the spark where his breath brushes my skin. The world holds its breath.
“I, Aiden Thorn, Alpha of the Bloodhaven Pack,” he says low and lethal, “reject you, Evangeline Hart, as my mate and Luna.”
The bond shatters like glass inside my chest.
Pain claws through me. But I lift my chin, tears unshed.
“Good,” I breathe, voice trembling but unbroken. “Because I reject you too.”
For a heartbeat he just stares at me, the mighty Alpha frozen.
Then I turn. I walk away. Each step is agony, but each step is mine.
Behind me, I swear I hear Ash’s howl — and I know, deep down, this is not the end.
This is the beginning.
