Chapter 16

ZARA’S POV “Gift?” I asked as I laughed sarcastically. “With all due respect, my husband and I didn’t ask for your goodwill. It won’t be necessary.” Victor turned towards Cael, “Do you also agree with your wife? Is it right for you to have a hushed wedding and no honeymoon? I wonder what people would think of that.” Cael nodded slightly, “You are right. We will go on our honeymoon. However, you shouldn’t arrange something like that for us next time. We will handle it on our own.” “If you say so,” Victor smirked. He walked out of the living room stealthily and at that moment, I confronted Cael. “What was that?” I asked angrily. “Why would you agree on the honeymoon? Don’t you know Victor is sending us to Paris so he can monitor us and carry out his sinister plot in our absence?” Cael sighed, “I understand that you are worried but we can’t skip the honeymoon. Sure, Victor will monitor us but it might just be what we need to turn the tables around. You understand me, don’t you?” I nodded nervously. Now I didn’t know if I could trust Cael. Seeing as he was agreeing with Victor’s suggestions, I couldn’t rule out that he was supporting Victor on a lowkey. “What are your plans for today?” he asked curiously. I hesitated a bit, trying to filter out what Cael could and couldn’t learn of. “I don’t have any important plans for the day,” I lied. “Ah, I should go shopping for a dress. That is my most important plan for the day. How about you?” Cael shrugged, “Nothing much as well. I will go to the main office and make sure the company will be run properly during my absence. I will also break the news of marriage to my staff members.” “They didn’t know about it before?” I asked even though I knew the answer. “Yes, only my assistant, Charles, knows of the marriage,” he replied. “And the circumstances surrounding our marriage?” I asked. “Does Charles know everything?” Cael took a deep breath before answering, “Yes, he does. That is why he will be a great aide for you in my absence.” I heard footsteps approaching us and my discussion with Cael was halted. It was Kate. She came closer and asked, “I hope both of you had a peaceful night? I heard Victor was here. I guess he left already.” “Yes, a few minutes ago,” I answered. “Then both of you should freshen up for the day,” Kate suggested. “I understand you are going to your workplace this morning, Cael. Do you have any plans yet, Zara?” “Shopping,” I chuckled. “I will be shopping for clothes at noon.” “Then I will accompany you,” Kate offered. “I don’t wish to trouble you. I’m sure I will be fine on my own,” I said vigorously. “It will be better if you have someone by your side,” Kate pressed. “You don’t know much about today’s fashion. Even if I wanted to take someone, it wouldn’t be you,” I replied carelessly. I watched Kate’s excited look turn dry. “Right,” she muttered weakly. “This old and outdated woman will go to the kitchen to see how breakfast is coming up.” Kate turned to leave instantly and my conscience pricked me. “You have hurt her,” Cael muttered, a smirk on her face. “Oh s**t,” I blurted. I went after her instantly, “I’m sorry. Wait for me, my lovely Kate. You aren’t outdated!" Kate walked even faster. Well, I wasn’t going to give up. ** Kate accepted my apology in the end but she refused to come with me. I went shopping alone and in thirty minutes, I found two suitable dresses and bought them. Afterwards, I drove myself to the Rey Law Firm which was run by Mr. Reynolds, my mother’s lawyer. I had an appointment with him and I wished to keep that meeting a secret. “Welcome,” Mr. Reynolds said, shaking my hand. He offered me a seat and we began to talk extensively on the inheritance. “I wanted you to come as we have to speak about the assets left to you by your late mother. Of course, you understand that if you don’t remain married for a specific timeframe, you would be considered to have defaulted the clause and the assets will be withdrawn. But for now, we will consider that you have honored your mother’s wishes and begin the transfers of her assets.” Mr. Reynolds showed a document; a compilation of my mother’s assets. “As you can see, there are shares and investments, money in bank accounts, houses, cars, and lands, artwork and other valuables,” Mr. Reynolds explained. “My mother had great wealth…” I muttered. “And she left it all for you,” he smiled. “You would notice that your mother didn’t run any business by herself. However, she did buy a company recently and I believe that was specially for you. If you check the end of the list, you will see it.” “Apex Productions?” I read from the document. “Yes,” he replied. “It is an entertainment company known for a few popular movies and TV series. Your mother did mention that you once wanted to become a movie producer. You never pursued that dream though.” “Right,” I nodded as I traveled down memory lane. I had thought my mother was indifferent to my dream. Little did I know that she had something like this planned for me. “You can find someone to run the company or you could sell it,” Mr. Reynolds said calmly. “You can also choose to run it by yourself. What will you do?” I took a deep breath, “I wish to think about this for some time.” “Of course, you can take all the time you need,” he replied, smiling. “In the meantime, I will continue handling the transfer of the assets. I assure you that it will be done as swiftly as possible.” I stood up to leave, “Thank you for always.” “I am only doing my job,” he replied, standing on his feet as well. I turned at first and then turned back again, “Err… I have a favor. By any chance, do you know any competent private investigator?” Mr. Reynolds smiled, “Why? Do you wish to do a background check on somebody?” I nodded, “It must be kept a secret.” “Who is it?” he asked. “My husband.”
