She Was Never The First Choice: chapter 1
The first time I realized I was never the first choice, I was standing in the rain—alone—while everyone else celebrated inside. The hall was bright with laughter, music spilling through the glass doors, and my name was nowhere on the lips of anyone who mattered. I watched through the window as he raised his glass, smiling at her, the woman standing beside him like she had always belonged there. That man was Daniel Moore. And once upon a time, he was mine. Or at least, I thought he was. My phone buzzed in my hand, the screen lighting up with a message I already knew the content of before opening it. Daniel: I’m sorry. Things got complicated. We’ll talk later. Later. That word had followed me for three years like a curse. Later never came. I slipped my phone back into my bag and wiped the rain from my face, pretending it was just water and not tears. I had dressed carefully tonight—simple black dress, soft makeup, hair pulled back neatly—hoping that when he saw me, he would remember. Remember the nights we talked until morning. Remember the promises whispered in the dark. Remember me. But Daniel didn’t even look my way. Instead, his hand rested protectively on her waist. His fiancée. I laughed quietly, the sound bitter in my own ears. Funny how life works. I had been there when he had nothing. When his dreams were still fragile things he was afraid to say out loud. When his pockets were empty and his future uncertain. And now that he had everything… I had become invisible. “Pathetic,” I muttered to myself. I turned away from the glass doors and stepped back into the rain, my heels clicking against the pavement as memories I had tried so hard to bury clawed their way back. --- Three years ago, Daniel had looked at me like I was his whole world. “You’re all I need, Ava,” he’d said, holding my face in his hands. “Just give me time. I’ll make it right.” I believed him. I always did. When he moved to the city for work, I stayed behind, supporting him from afar, cheering for every small success. When he stopped calling as often, I told myself he was busy. When his messages became short and cold, I convinced myself love just changed with time. What I didn’t know was that love didn’t change. It was replaced. By someone better. Someone richer. Someone from his world. Tonight wasn’t just an engagement party. It was my wake-up call. --- I didn’t remember how I got home. I only remembered sitting on the edge of my bed, staring at the cracked ceiling of my tiny apartment, asking myself the same question over and over again. When did I stop being enough? My phone buzzed again. This time, I answered. “Ava—” “Congratulations,” I cut him off, my voice steady in a way that surprised even me. “She’s beautiful. You look happy.” There was silence on the other end. Then a sigh. “I didn’t want you to find out like that.” I smiled sadly. “You didn’t want me to find out at all.” “Ava, please. You know you meant something to me.” Meant. Past tense. I closed my eyes. “Goodbye, Daniel.” Before he could respond, I ended the call. And for the first time in three years, I cried—not because I lost him, but because I finally understood the truth. I was never the woman he planned to keep. I was the woman he practiced loving on his way to someone else. --- That night, as I lay awake listening to the rain against my window, I made myself a promise. I would stop waiting to be chosen. I would choose myself. I didn’t know then that walking away from Daniel would be the beginning of a much bigger story—one filled with revenge, unexpected love, and a truth that would shake them man who thought he had left me behind. But one thing was certain. The girl who begged for love died that night. And the woman who rose from her ashes would never be anyone’s second choice again.
