The Hill

494 Words
Approximately a hundred steps away from my house, there was this small hill. I've been eyeing this landscape since I moved here in my grandma's place. I actually inherited this old, medieval house from her. So when she died, I officially owned her abode. I was residing in this rural place for one week. Since I was too busy with my job as a journalist, all I could do was stare at the small hill and think about what kind of plants, flowers, or vegetables I could use to sow with. Even though I am a guy, I love flowers and gardening. My day off from work finally came—the day I had been waiting for—and I was too excited to get all my gardening tools to start the work on the small hill. The hill was still included in the properties owned by my grandma, so I see no problems ahead with turning that hill into whatever garden I like. My seeds were ready, and my tools were complete, so I had no time to waste! As I reached the small hill that was filled with green grass, I heaved a deep sigh of tiredness from carrying all my tools and stuff. But it didn't stop me from what I was planning to do with this little natural landscape by my house. I laid all my tools on the ground and began examining the hill. It wasn't too huge and tall, but it was just the right size for my work capacity. "What a cute, small hill." I heard someone behind me speak when I was about to get my rake. I turned around to face the man who was looking at the hill. Based on his clothes, I could say he was a farmer, especially since he had this straw hat on his head. "Hi there. Yes, what a cute, lovely hill," I said, taking a glimpse at the hill beside me. "Are you going to sow vegetables on that hill?" he asked, fixing his gaze on me. I nodded and smiled. "Yes, and flowers. I was about to cultivate it when you arrived." He flashed a weak smile. "Your plants would love to grow in that area," he remarked. My brows furrowed, but I tried to hide it with my smile. "Absolutely. I am sure that the soil on this hill is rich in minerals. The grass looked healthy and greener!" I exclaimed. He nodded and stared at me. "You're new here, aren't you?" "Yes, I am. Why?" He stood closer to me. A little bit uncomfortable with his movement, I subtly leaned away. "A group of barbaric people invaded this place years ago. They killed hundreds of people and stole their things. After the group satisfied their cruel cravings, they left and never heard of them again." He sighed. "This hill was a stack of dead people since the barbaric group was too lazy to bury them."
