Chapter Fourteen It was only the work of a minute or two to pull out my winter gear and put my hair back into a ponytail. I wasn’t sure how this next part would go, but it was safe to say there was a walk in the woods ahead of me. As I shrugged on my coat, I felt the weight of my phone hanging in the pocket. I’d left it in there, since it had been a useless brick ever since it had died in the snowstorm. I reached in, skimming a finger over the mirrored smoothness of the dark screen, and felt a stirring of warmth in my chest. Soon, maybe even within the hour, I would be back in the world of human things: cars, phones, TVs, all the miscellany of modern life. There would be plants that were green, magic-less mirrors, furniture sized to fit me, and, most importantly, human beings themselves.
