CHAPTER 2

LILY The forest floor was cool and comforting beneath my body, even if it was just a moment of improvised rest. After tending to the wounds of the injured wolf, exhaustion weighed on my limbs, and the darkness of the night whispered promises of relief in the recesses of the forest. However, even in apparent stillness, fear persisted. Adrian's shadow loomed over me, a threatening specter that could materialize at any moment. Every shadow in the forest seemed to hide his vampiric eyes, and I kept a vigilant eye on the movements in the darkness. My eyes closed slowly, darkness enveloping my consciousness. Yet, even in the depths of dreams, Adrian's presence echoed. Nightmares danced around, painting images of bright red eyes and sharp fangs. The forest transformed into a labyrinth, each tree becoming a threat, every shadow a sinister omen. And then, silence. A vacuum of sensations that could only be filled by the gentle sound of nocturnal breathing. The darkness deepened, absorbing the fears as I surrendered to sleep. Awakening came subtly, as if the forest itself were calling me back to consciousness. I opened my eyes reluctantly, expecting to see Adrian's hungry gaze staring at me from the darkness. However, the only silent witness was the moon, gazing serenely from its throne in the sky. As I rose, a sigh escaped my lips as I realized that the fear was still present, an inescapable shadow accompanying me. My attention turned to where the wounded wolf lay, but to my surprise, there was no wolf but a man. A beautiful man, lying on the earth with the same fragility as the wounded wolf I had cared for.His hair was the color of the night and long, wild like the wolf's fur, and his skin had the same silver nuances as the moonlight. Wounds marked his form, a silent narrative of a battle fought on the border between two worlds. He was unconscious, but his breathing was calm and rhythmic, as if he were merely immersed in a deep sleep. Intrigued and cautious, I approached. My eyes scanned his face, wondering how someone so beautiful could be so injured. My hand gently touched his skin, and a subtle warmth seemed to radiate from it. An inexplicable connection seemed established, as if the touch had awakened something dormant in the sleeping man. I silently wished that he wouldn't die from the many wounds on his body. I had helped a wolf, and now a man lay on this grass. I felt enchanted because he seemed like the most fascinating thing in this world to me, and for a moment, I even forgot my fears and the reason I was in this forest. I stood there, silently watching him until his eyes opened slowly. The deep green that met mine was full of surprise and strangely, gratitude. He blinked a few times, as if trying to understand where he was and how he had arrived there. "Thank you for taking care of me.", he said, his voice soft as a whisper of the night breeze. Surprise and fascination mingled on my face as I stepped back. "Who are you? How did you...?", He smiled gently, as if aware of the questions swirling in my mind. "I am Dylan Stark. And, as you may have noticed, I am not always a wolf.", He continued to gaze at me as if waiting for something from me. I was almost about to ask him if the wounds on his skin were hurting too much, but then I realized I hadn't told him my name yet. "Lily, my name is Lily.", I whispered, and he nodded. Seconds later, Dylan's green eyes were observing my belly as if he were trying to understand why a pregnant girl would be in a place like this at night. "You seem frightened. The nightmare forest is not a safe place for humans, Lily.", he said, and seconds later, I felt tears welling up in my eyes. I thought of Adrian and the fear I felt, but I just kept looking at the long-haired man before me as if seeking comfort. "I think no place is safe for me now." "Fear and pain won't last forever, sweet Lily...", he said, standing up, and I furrowed my brow, looking at his still blood-stained body. I really wanted to ask how this was possible, but I thought this wasn't the best time to ask those kinds of questions. "You're still very hurt...", I approached, seeing Dylan's green eyes analyzing me carefully. "I'm fine, I'm fine because you helped me, thank you, Lily.", he said with a small smile, and I nodded. For some reason I still didn't know, I felt like raising my hand and touching his skin, but I couldn't do that. I was in front of a wolf, a man who could become a wolf, and there were many questions in my mind. "You also seem to need help.", he said, and in my head, I could see Adrian's red eyes. "I just need to reach a safe place.", I whispered, trying not to cry in front of him. Dylan observed me again for a few seconds as if trying to find my fears through my eyes. He turned his head and pointed to a mountain. "Continue through the forest, and you'll find a village of humans. I don't know what you're running from, but I'm sure you and your baby will be safe there.", he said, and a smile grew on my lips when I realized he referred to me and my son. "Thank you, Dylan.", I said, watching him approach me. I furrowed my brow when I saw him taking off some kind of necklace around his neck. The necklace had a kind of stone and seemed to shine in the night; I had never seen anything like it and as beautiful as this. "I have a debt of life to you, Lily. This is for you. You helped me, and I will help you if you need me.", he said, putting the necklace around my neck. At that moment, I forgot about Adrian and thought that there were still good people like Dylan in this cruel world. He wasn't a human man; he was a supernatural creature, but he seemed like a good person. I touched the stone of the necklace, feeling the light radiating between my fingers; it seemed very magical, but I still couldn't understand how this was possible. "I will know and feel when you are in danger. Just think of me, and I will be with you, Lily.", I raised my head, looking at Dylan's green eyes shining in the darkness. "How?", I asked confused. "You'll know when it happens.", Dylan explained that he was a shapeshifter, able to change shape between a wolf and a human. He had been injured while protecting his pack from an unknown threat. I listened, fascinated and perplexed, as he shared his story of a world where wolves could be men and men, wolves. As we talked in the forest, the fear I had carried since the clearing began to dissipate. Dylan was a supernatural being, but his presence was comforting, far from the threat Adrian posed. He shared stories about the magic that permeated the forest and the beings that inhabited it, offering a glimpse into a world beyond the reach of human eyes.
