CHAPTER 3

1876 Words
LILY Dylan expressed his gratitude to me once again, and I felt my heartbeats quicken as he approached me again. "I'll always be around to chase away your fears, sweet Lily.", he said, and I smiled at him. I stayed silent, watching the wolf move away and walk among the trees of the forest; he still seemed very hurt, but he kept moving away more and more. Dylan turned his head to look at me one last time before leaving, and I could see his eyes shining again. "Fear doesn't live forever, remember that. I'm sure I'll see you again, Lily.", he said, and seconds later, I saw him disappearing into the darkness.I was alone in the clearing, but this time, loneliness was no longer frightening. The darkness of the forest enveloped me again as I resumed the journey, pregnant and vulnerable, moving away from the clearing that had provided a brief refuge. Each step was a reminder of the adversities faced, the throbbing pain in my forehead from the cut deepening with every movement. I was alone in the darkness, but Adrian's shadow loomed like a threatening specter, driving me forward in search of safety. Thirst was a constant discomfort, as if the forest itself was sucking the moisture from my body. My dry lips longed for water, but the nighttime forest was an impenetrable wall of uncertainties. Every rustle of the foliage was a potential threat, and my heart raced with every shadow that moved around me. The memory of the metamorphic wolf, Dylan, still echoed in my mind. His green and grateful eyes were a counterpoint to the terror that now surrounded me. I didn't know if it was possible to trust anyone that night, but his memory brought a fragile flame of hope, a glimpse that perhaps not all encounters in the forest were sinister. The persistent pain in my forehead, now a constant nuisance, made me stagger as I continued my way. The darkness, once a welcoming cloak, became a silent lament echoing my concerns. I wished to find a safe place, away from hungry eyes and supernatural threats. It was then, amidst the darkness, that I glimpsed distant lights. A village, small and remote, rose like an island of hope in the night. Cautiously, I approached, the muffled sounds of everyday life becoming more audible with each step. The smell of fireplace smoke and the murmur of conversations became a comforting melody. It was the same village of human people that Dylan had told me about. The village proved to be modest, its wooden houses lined up like silent sentinels. There, I found a well, and the fresh water that bubbled was like an elixir for my burning thirst. I drank deeply, feeling the invigorating liquid not only quenching my thirst but also easing some of the tension weighing on me. "This is not our end yet.", I whispered, looking and touching my belly. With hesitant steps, I sought a place where I could rest and perhaps find help for the wound on my forehead. As I approached the center of the village, I spotted a modest tavern with a soft light shining through its windows. I entered, feeling the curious looks of the few villagers present. The interior of the tavern was cozy, with the warmth of the fireplace dispelling the chill of the night. A handful of locals occupied tables, their hushed conversations creating a comforting background. I headed to the counter, where a friendly-looking innkeeper observed me with interest. "It seems you've had a difficult night, my lady. What brings you to our humble village?", he inquired, his local accent accentuating the words. I briefly explained my situation, mentioning the encounter with the metamorphic wolf and my desperate escape from Adrian. The innkeeper, understanding, offered me a damp towel to clean the wound on my forehead and then brought me a simple but nutritious meal. I still had many unanswered questions, and the innkeeper seemed kind enough to answer them all. I inquired about Dylan, and I was surprised when he told me that the wolf was a well-known man in this village. He had a house at the end of this street, but currently, he lived in an isolated cabin on a mountain in the forest. Dylan was also the leader of his pack; he was the alpha of the wolves, and I was eager to learn more about how wolves live. Chewing on a piece of bread, I pondered Dylan's words, causing me to glance at the necklace around my neck. He seemed certain that we would meet again. While eating, I felt a mix of relief and nervousness. The village felt like a temporary sanctuary, but the threat still loomed over me. The shadows of the forest could hide secrets as dangerous as the ones I had left behind. As the night progressed, the villagers, curious and welcoming, began to approach. I shared my story with them, receiving expressions of compassion and sympathy. A local healer offered me an ointment for the wound on my forehead, and their kindness warmed my heart. As I exchanged stories with the villagers, I discovered that they lived in harmony with the forest, respecting the secrets it held. The village was small but strong in community spirit. The village offered a temporary refuge, but I knew my journey was not yet over. The unknown awaited outside, in the forest that surrounded the village. However, in that moment, with the pain eased and the threat momentarily pushed away, I allowed myself a brief respite.Tomorrow would bring new challenges, but for now, I was grateful for the warmth of the village, the friendly hands that helped me, and the possibility of an uncertain but hopeful tomorrow. That night, I lay beneath the welcoming roof of a local house, surrounded by strangers who had temporarily become my family. There I was, lying on the makeshift bed in the cozy room above the village tavern, my eyes heavy with exhaustion. The flickering flame of the lone candle on the nightstand cast dancing shadows on the wooden walls. In the landscape of my sleep, I found myself wandering through a moonlit meadow, the air thick with a sense of foreboding. The soft rustle of leaves and the distant hooting of an owl created a supernatural atmosphere. As I walked, the scenery transformed, and I stood at the edge of a dense forest. A figure emerged from the shadows, and my heart quickened as Adrian materialized before me. His eyes glowed with an ominous red hue, and his lips curled into a sinister smile. In the dream, Adrian's presence exuded a malevolence that sent shivers down my spine. "Lily, my love.", he hissed, his voice a chilling whisper echoing through the dream world. "You cannot escape me. You and that child inside you are mine." Instinctively, I clutched my pregnant belly, a surge of protectiveness flooding me. "You'll never have him," I declared, my voice unwavering despite the fear that gnawed at me. Adrian's laughter reverberated, bouncing off the imaginary trees. "You can't hide forever. I'll find you, and when I do, that child will belong to me. You can't deny me what is rightfully mine." The dream twisted into a nightmarish scenario. I felt a cold wind, and the meadow transformed into a dark alley. Adrian loomed over me, his face a mask of hunger and malice. He reached for me, and I recoiled, the dream's intensity heightening. Suddenly, I jolted awake in the dimly lit room above the tavern. My heart pounded, and a thin sheen of sweat covered my skin. The dream lingered like a haunting melody, the fear still fresh in my mind. As I sat up, disoriented, the distant echo of screams reached my ears. Panic seized my heart. The peaceful atmosphere of the village had given way to chaos. My instincts screamed at me, urging me to escape once again. In a swift motion, I leaped from the bed and rushed to the window. The once-tranquil village now teemed with panic. Torches illuminated the night as villagers ran frantically through the narrow streets. My eyes widened with dread as I realized that Adrian had found me, his malevolent presence staining the serenity I had briefly found. Without a second thought, I bolted from the room and down the creaky staircase, my feet pounding on the wooden steps. The tavern below was in disarray, with patrons and villagers alike clamoring for safety. My eyes darted, searching for an escape route. As I reached the entrance, a shadow detached itself from the chaos and materialized into the form of Adrian. His crimson eyes locked onto me, a predatory grin stretching across his face. Panic surged through my veins as I turned and sprinted away, my pregnant belly a heavy reminder of the vulnerability that now defined my existence. Adrian pursued with supernatural speed, closing the gap between us. My breaths came in ragged gasps as I navigated the twisting alleys, but the relentless pursuit continued. I could feel his cold breath on my neck, his presence an inescapable nightmare. In a desperate bid to outmaneuver him, I burst into a nearby building and locked the door behind me. My hands trembled as I leaned against the door, trying to steady my panicked breaths. The room was dimly lit, and shadows played tricks on my anxious mind. Suddenly, the door shuddered under the force of Adrian's impact. My eyes widened in terror as the wood groaned and splintered. With a final, powerful shove, Adrian breached the entrance, and I stumbled backward. His crimson gaze fixated on me, the hunger in his eyes intensifying. Paralyzed by fear, I felt a wave of despair wash over me. As Adrian advanced, he pushed me forcefully into the room, the door slamming shut behind us and sealing my fate within the dark confines of the village inn. "I've finally found you, my love. It's time to return to our home, Lily.", he said, and I shook my head, still sprawled on the floor. "No! Please, Adrian! No!" "Don't be afraid. I'm here, and I know you love me, Lily. Think of the power we'll have together when all of this is over." I closed my eyes tightly, hoping he wouldn't hurt me. I was trapped in this place with him, and I couldn't find a way to escape again because he was much stronger than me. "Please, the love I felt for you no longer exists, let me go, Adrian. Our child can't give you the power you so desire.", I said, watching his eyes darken. "The baby inside your belly is all I want in this world, Lily. I am his father, and I have the right, and there's nothing you can do to stop me!", he shouted as I felt his hand lifting my body. Seconds later, he pushed me forcefully against the wall of the room, and I opened my eyes, seeing his sharp fangs. I felt my body tremble with fear again as I sensed his hand on my face. He touched me the same way he used to when I still loved him, when our love was pure and beautiful.
