Reyne's POV
The crowd erupted into a deafening roar as Chase, my secret boyfriend of two years and the captain of our hockey team, slammed the puck into the net just as the final seconds of the game disappeared.
“AND THAT’S THE GOAL! VIOLET SHADE TAKES THE WIN! WHAT A WAY TO END THE MATCH!”
The commentator's voice boomed through the room as the scoreboard flashed the numbers everyone had been waiting for.
4: 2
Our Pack won the first match of the Inter-pack Hockey Tournament.
I screamed on top of my lungs and jumped in the stands as I watched the huge screen above the stands flash 'Winner: Violate Shade Pack'. I held the pom-pom in my hands, its fluffy strands bouncing wildly around me.
People jumped from their seats, screaming and cheering while the hockey players threw their sticks onto the ice and crashed into one another in celebration. I suddenly ceased all motions and stared at Chase.
He winked in my direction before removing his helmet. My heart fluttered. I could feel my cheeks heating up. I smiled watching him skate across the ice. Chase tucked his helmet beneath one arm and ran his fingers through his hair.
My stomach fluttered because of that one unintentional movement. I gulped hard before gritting my teeth. The girls next to me were clicking his pictures and making inappropriate comments on him.
This is the hardest part of being in a secret relationship with a hockey star player— You can't express your anger even if you feel offended.
I helplessly sighed as I remembered Chase and our agreement. He was doing so well in his field that he couldn't risk making the talks of a relationship official. Above all, he said he didn't want distractions.
And if people knew he was dating someone, there would be unnecessary discussion on chat groups and rumors flying around, which could seriously affect him and his game. That being the case, we decided to keep our relationship a secret.
But every time I saw a girl make a sėxually inappropriate comment on my boyfriend, I felt as though someone ripped my chest open with their claws and twisted my heart around.
What's worse is that he is so much more attractive than me, making us look completely mismatched. Sometimes I feel like he is far too handsome for someone like me.
To put it straight, I am plain although I have long straight brown hair, a not so slim figure, 5' 2 height, and muddy brown color eyes (which Chase said resembles melted chocolate pond).
On the other hand, he's like a charming Prince.
I mean, look at him! He's 6' 1. Broad and well-built. His chiseled jaw looked carved from stone, and his blonde hair gleamed like fine golden threads.
"Who are you looking at?" My twin, Jeyne, suddenly appeared beside me. I hadn't even noticed her coming.
“When did you come here?”
“I asked first.” She eyed me sharply. “Who's the lucky guy?”
“It's n-nothing." I lied and averted my eyes.
"Don't lie to me, Reyne. We are twins. I know when you're lying."
I tried not to roll my eyes. That's true Jeyne and I are twins. But we don't share that telepathy and love other twins have.
You see, Jeyne is the pretty twin among us. She's blonde, pretty, and liked by all. On the other hand, I'm her shadow. They only remember me as the incompatible, talentless, jealous twin.
"Why do you ask if you know I'm lying? It's not like you care about me." I gave her a dark look.
A slow smile curved her lips, making my body shift uncomfortably.
"What are you staring at?!"
"You," Her smile widened. She came close and looped her arm around mine. I tried to force my hand out of her hold but she won't let go. "You were looking at Chase, weren't you? You like him."
My heart thudded in surprise and overwhelm. What gave that away? Chase and I are always careful. We don't meet when others are watching. Even right now, we both were careful. I was careful!
"Look, he's looking here again." I turned back towards the rink.
I gulped hard when our eyes met. Chase gave me a subtle air kiss while nodding absently at something one of his teammates was saying. Chase's blonde hair was damp with sweat, his jersey clinging to his broad shoulders, and his eyes shimmering in happiness.
He looked happy. So happy. And somehow, seeing that made me happier than the victory itself.
My heart flowed with euphoria as I admired Chase. My Chase. The captain of our college hockey team. My secret boyfriend. The sun of my life. The guy who loved me the most.
I wish I could go down there and hold him. Unfortunately, I can't. Though I spent the entire game sitting on the edge of my seat praying for him (because it was a neck-to-neck competition), now that they won, I can't even go there.
Every time he scored, I had to stop myself from jumping up and screaming his name too.
"Something is cooking between you two, isn't it!" Jeyne's voice snapped me back to reality.
I turned back to her and frowned, "Mind your own business, Jeyne. You have the whole college swooning over your looks. Go and enjoy their attention. Leave me alone."
I stormed out of there. I rushed out and halted in an empty dark passage. Oh goddess, why is my heart pounding so hard? So what if Jeyne saw Chase and me exchanging smiles and looking at each other? It's not like she can't do anything about it.
She has every other popular person wanting her. She's the most beautiful girl. Not just our parents, everyone else loves her more.
'Nothing will go wrong.' I told myself.
I was tired. I had been up all day today to encourage Chase for today's match. He had been very nervous given they were competing against the neighboring pack's team. They are the best. They have a reputation and they never lose... Except for today.
And it was possible only because of Chase.
Chase... My Chase. The love of my life. I closed my eyes and let his images fill my head. A faint smile curved my lips. Chase is my everything.
I was thinking about him when suddenly I felt arms around me. Then lips closed around my neck as my body was pressed into the wall by a hard and broad body. I didn't flinch because I knew that touch.
My hands came up and I let my fingers knit into his hair. A moan escaped my lips.
"Chase." I whispered.
"Thanks, baby." He looked up and cupped my face.
"Why are you thanking me? I did nothing." I chuckled.
"You think you did nothing. But for me, your presence was my biggest luck. I could make that last goal because you were there."
"Aww, I love you, Chase." I pulled him closer and latched our lips.
The second our mouths connected, a jolt of desire coursed through my veins.
Chase is the best thing that has ever happened to me. He had turned eighteen two months ago, but he hadn't found his mate. We have this strong feeling that I could be the one, hence we are waiting for my birthday.
There's very little time left. Just a few more weeks. Then I would finally be eighteen too.
A smile spread across my face at the thought. I hung there as Chase held my waist and dipped his head to kiss my neck. I roamed my fingers in his hair and pulled his head closer.
I was lost in the moment. In him. But then, out of nowhere, I had this strange feeling like someone was watching us.
Without disturbing my boyfriend, I swept my head around. Discomfort slammed through me when I saw a familiar shadow at the other end of the passage. A girl was standing in a wavy skirt.
There was some light coming from behind her. It helped me notice the color of her hair— blonde and curled at the tips.
The girl stepped back into the streak of light, and my heart skipped a beat. Jeyne? Why is she watching us?
Before I could dwell deep into it, Chase pulled away and grabbed my face.
"Baby, you must come today to the party with me."
"With you? And what party?"
"No, not with me. You know the gossip mill!" He apologetically pouted. "But I want you to be there. The party is being held at Zedkiel, the Alpha's son's apartment. He is throwing us a party to celebrate our victory. You have to be there."
"Okay." I said and he went back to kiss my neck.
I redirected my gaze to the end of the passage. There was no one. Maybe I was over thinking.
But it's not like I'm exaggerating. My twin, Jeyne, loves all the attention coming at her. If I get even an ounce of it, she becomes restless. There's another reason why I agreed to keep my relationship with Chase a secret.
I know for a fact that my twin would fume in jealousy if she discovered that I'm dating him.
According to her, only she deserves all the attention, not me. Because she's the beautiful twin whereas I'm average.
Chase's phone buzzed. We both broke the kiss and watched him fetch his phone.
"It's the coach. I'll have to go, baby. See you tonight. Bye." He pecked my lips before moving back.
"Bye, Chase. Love you." I waved after him.
My heart was still racing in my chest. Gosh, why do I feel so hot around him?
"So my guess was right. You're dating Chase Astor, the hockey captain." I almost jumped at the sound.
"Jeyne, you almost killed me. What are you doing here? Are you stalking me?" I narrowed my eyes.
"Stalking you? Haha, you're too full of yourself even though you have nothing to be proud about."
"You have a lot to be proud about, don't you! Then go and do what you always do— cry for attention."
Her fists clenched in anger, "You really think Chase loves you?"
"Don't take his name with your filthy mouth, Jeyne Woods." I snapped.
"Or what? What will you do?"
"I—"
"You can do nothing because you have no idea what Chase's real face is." Her words interrupted mine.
"What do you mean by that?" I glared at her.
Jeyne grinned mysteriously. Then she flipped her hair and spun around, "Nothing. Good luck at the party tonight."
"Fůck you, Jeyne. You must be pretty on the outside but you're a devil on the inside."
"But they still like me more! Haha."
My eyes watered at her remark. Sadly, I couldn't deny it. In this world beauty means everything. But I won't let Jeyne look better than me. She's not the one dating Chase.
She's just jealous.
And tonight, I'll show her who is more beautiful inside and out. Tonight, it's my night.
Or so I thought.
