At dawn, yesterday morning, the guerrilla chief Quantrill led five hundred raiders into the town of Lawrence, Kansas, and commenced to burn, pillage, and kill with a ferocity unmatched in the long and bloody history of warfare along the border.
For two days, the raiders advanced in secret upon the doomed town, pressing farmers into service as guides, then killing them when their usefulness was at an end. When, at last, they reached the outskirts of the place they let out a rebel yell and charged up the main street firing their pistols into businesses and homes without distinction.
