XI The Changes a Year Makes
“Yes, we’re getting the tree today, Mom,” Maria said into the receiver. “Thanks again for sending the money.”
“I just wish you were coming home for Christmas,” her mother answered with indignation.
“James is working and I doubt I could make the drive by myself,” Maria answered. She noticed James watching her, his expression anxious.
“We could fly you in,” Beth offered. “Then you could see your brother.”
Maria sighed. “I can’t leave James by himself. It’s our first Christmas together!”
“Oh, but Maria, you’ll be all alone…”
“His parents are coming to spend Christmas Day with us. We won’t be alone.”
